- Only 10 2000 p Experimental Rinse (ER) Anti Tarnishing Agent Sacagawea one dollar coins are known. Discovered this coin early at their 1st introduction say mid June or July 2000. And during my research on this coin I discovered several interesting things about this Sacagawea coin which are covered below. By Subscribing it will help Me help You stay informed about my research and upcoming informative videos on more surprise Sacagawea coins that I collected and the unexplained and nearly impossible connection between multiple "p" / "d" / "p" Mint Marks and another interesting connection I discovered between two coins That came out of a US Postal Service vending machine in the same hand full as pocket change. So far I have only run across two 2000 p experimental rinse "ER" Sacagaweas certified as "ERs". The 2001 ERs seem to have a different chemical coating and or heat treatment than the 2000 P ERs. Another Sacagawea dollar site has a photo of a 2000p Sacagawea Experimental rinse Coin that is very similar if not exactly the same as this coin and a photo of a more brown colored Experimental Rinse Sacagawea. I have also found some slabbed 2001p Experimental Rinse Sagcagaweacoins that are very similar in color, finish and description if not exactly the same as this coin. This Sacagawea coin could be on a experimental metal alloy planchet or may had an Experimental Anti-tarnishing Agent applied to the surface of the metal either before the planchets were cut or to the planchets after being cut or maybe both ways were tested, but it weigh is correct. This dollar coin has a slight green brown copper color, with a matte like patina and no wear with very few bag marks if any. The rim is slightly higher around part of the edge, maybe brockage from light multiple strikes. The mint does admit conducting engineering and metallurgical tests but cites trade secrets and minting security for not releasing all the chemical make-ups or of all the alloys or anti-tarnishing agents tested, used or rejected. The Martha Washington test Dollar was used to test different alloys and anti-tarnishing agents to help in the final manufacture of the Sacagawea Dollars. Maybe this coin missed the 1st or 2nd chemical in the anti-tarnishing agent process which gave it this more rare surface than the fully processed experimental rinse coin. A metal formation that looks very similar to a flattened D is quite interesting, and is located in a similar location to a D on a quarter or maybe a "P" was struck over and off center "D" Sacagawea coin. Some Sacagawea coins have been discovered with the front surface of a quarter stamped in to the coin. They are called Mule coins. I will be actively researching for any new theories about just what may have happened to this coin, so if you subscribe you will get notice of any new information that I may come up with for my next video. Thanks for sharing - I live & work in California - I work retail - and these "matte finish" Sacagawea dollars show up fairly regularly in our register tills - usually around once or twice a month, sometimes more often, occasionally less often but I usually see at least one a month... I am going to start buying them out of the register drawer from now on, thanks for the tip!
I wish I would come across one of those quarter obverse/Sacagawea reverse coins or one of the Susan B./Sacagawea planchet mint error coins they are rare indeed & worth quite a bit.

I've had a 2000 D with the brownish green and have been holding on tp it for several years, it is not uncirculated but the patina looks like the 2001 p matte type finish. Is there a way to tell without spending the money to have it graded? As i said it's circulated but all the lines/features are very distinct. If I did should i insure it?

Beautiful coin. It's sad how few people have appreciation for coins like these. I also admire your willingness to keep it raw/ungraded; as I do not trust the grading companies and, even if I did, wouldn't be stupid enough to put my 1999 Experimental Planchet New Jersey in the mail.
Manganese Brass, Aluminum Bronze, and all of the other "gold" colored, compound alloys of Copper have always been my favorite colored coins. It's sad that the Sac dollar series has proven so unpopular as a currency.

I have one that seems to have a very dull oddly colored finish also. Should I try and clean it up and see if it turns brass?

I too have a Sacagawea $1 coin and the finish on it is really dark and matte finish it's like if you mixed black and gold together and just painted it on the dollar it's got that kind of finish do it some places it's darker some places, and it's lighter in others but it's got the same texture over the entire coin, weird because it's not dirty it just looks like it is thank you for the information and if you seen one like that get back to me please.. I found a 2000 P that looks almost just like yours. Brown with greenish tones. Please message me back as I'd love to know if this is a real exp. Wash coin. Just looks different. My mind is going in circles around this coin.
The US Mint did several tests on these Sacagawea dollars in order to see how they would stand up in the natural environment if dropped on the ground for years and to do with years of use in casinos and vending machines. All the tests have not been released in detail that I can see so far. save your coin and spread the word.

Hey... Yes.. mine is Nickle, I thought it was A Silver quarter. I bought the roll from a local store.. and I pushed the quarters out in my hand and thought it was a Silver quarter. I did see they sell for alot. I think 15 where made of the Delaware state quarter in the Sacagawea type metal. I don't know how many where made of the other metal.

I also have one that I am sure has the experimental rinse however a burn spot has shown up right in front of the eagle so it is a perfect example that the experimental rinse did not work on all the dollars in which it was used

I just saw something on the coins that no one seems to have noticed. The two face's (Dull vs Shiny) are different. Look closely at the 2 coins side by side. The face on the dull coin has a softer look to it, the nose is a little different it seems, the lips are fuller and yes the hair is more detailed. Looks like it was tampered with, or gone over somehow. Does anyone one else notice the difference?

This was uploaded in 2014, what's happened since? I have a similar dull looking Sacagawea & no shine but it has no date & instead of an eagle on the back it has Sacagawea planting seeds. Don't know the date but it also shows a raised edge on right.

Hi. I just wanted to say that I have an almost exact to your coin! The only difference, I believe, is mine has a more brown then green color. But I also have one with a greenish tint to it. Have you found or anything on these yet?

If you are in the Seattle area you can go to Harbor View Hospital. I'm not But anyway go to the stamp vending machine and buy stamps. The machine kicks out Sacagawea coins for change. Spell check

I have a similar coin but it is a 2000 D. it was part of a coin set from American Eagle.
Very nice rare find congratulations !!! .... Now this is not as exciting, but, I have what I believe to be the special 2000p with the "satin" finish ? It is not as bright as the D version I have also saved. Yet still in VERY good condition, and, I highly doubt it is due to wear obviously.
Shane Corning if you do have a "satin" finish coin then it was a special coin given to the person who drew the portrait on the coin and is worth a LOT more than a "special rinse" coin !!

It's circulated but who cares right hahahahaha. It is EXTREMELY shiny ? Oddly shiny. Almost like a proof ? "WHO Knows" what it is right hahahaha.

I have had for about 4 years a sacagawea dollar 2000 D chocolate in color and the mint will not acknowledge that it is an error. If you don't believe me I can send you a picture of it. So all you haters keep comments to yourself because I do have one.

I have one of the same color but the reverse is different. It has five arrows wrap w/ cloth and great law of peace was written and also it has no date.
