- In this video I strip down a HP Pavilion G6 that has a failed CPU cooling fan, and prepare for replacement. This video is also useful if you wish to dismantle a G6 for a different reason.
Thanks for the detailed video, although HP should change its design. It indeed is ridiculous to disassemble 90% of the computer to change a fan.

For anyone reading the comments.i used this video to repair my G6. You need a screwdriver kit like those they use to repair glasses. I used a tiny flat head to pry open the electrical connectors. The main thing however is that this video isn’t exact however it’s a general how to on g6. Mine had a couple of things in slightly different locations. I also recommend marking the screws your remove and where they came from to remember exactly which screw goes back where because there are a variety of sizes that can get mixed up. This might be an annoying job but it’s not difficult for anyone who doesn’t want to pay a repair shop. At the very least you should be comfortable/ experienced using a screwdriver and unplugging electrical plugs because that’s basically all this job entails. I have no idea how much they charge to do this at a shop but it cost me less than $10 for the fan and I was finished in a few hours. The hardest part is locating all the screws to come out since you can’t see each one in this video, and your g6 might have a few slightly different than shown here.
Have to do this a second time now. Went right to this video again, glad it's in my history. It's not 100% perfect for my Pavilion m7, but very very close. It gets the job done.

Followed these instructions and did the job in less than 40 minutes. Video is so easy to follow and explains everything. Saved me megabucks, even a child could do this.

I'm a child and I did this.
I didn't replace the fan since its a brushless DC motor. I took the fan blade out (lift the impeller from the motor assembly), air blow the coil, put a little tiny bit of grease on the shaft, then put it back. Replace the heatsink compound with a premium one.
And its quiet and cool ever since. Will have to disassemble the laptop probably 1 year later to service again.

i get all the way to the fan to find out i need a smaller screw driver to get the final two screws. i wont be investing in HP again. despite this being an amazing video, the task to replace a fan is ridiculous
i just followed your instructions and i had to remove so much dust from the fan (literally a thumb's nail size ball) put it back together following the instructions in reverse and works like a charm. Thanks dude!

I just used this video to fix my laptop. Exactly what I needed, however, in the future please show how to put it back together afterwards instead of asking the viewer to keep skipping back in the video to put the laptop back together.

I just did this.. In a little under 2 hours with a lunch break.
I am a mechanic by trade but this was completely different! Was alot of fun and did let need a new fan. It was a case of alot of dust built up over time and stopped fan from rotating, so very happy to of saved a few quid as well.
Give it a go if you have a spare afternoon.

Great video very helpful for anyone wanting to disassemble an HP G6 laptop.
I had error code 90B but noticed the fan was blowing air but seemed to be running at 100% speed.
I did a hard reset and that didn't help so the next step recommended by HP was to update the BIOS.
After the BIOS update the problem was resolved and I also run a CPU stress test and the hottest CPU temperature was 77C.
Great video! I just finished repairing mine. Happy with the result.
What about the thermal paste?
Helped me but my G6 had much more screws and none in the battery tray but i got there in the end ! Noticed my hinges were very tight and had broken the mounts on the case ! A simple small 5.5mm socket helped loosen the hinges so they weren’t so tight ! maybe have to glue hinge to case or try get new one 🙄 Thanks your video was very helpful 🙏🏻

Hey computer companies,How about putting a single cover on the bottom of the computer with a compartment for a drop in fan.Having to take apart half the computer to replace the fan is ridiculous!
That's kind of the point. They don't want you to go through the trouble of replacing the fan, they want you to buy a new computer.
thats not exactly true,hp does their best to post manuals for fixing it at home and parts are very inexpencive, you cant just put a fan whereever
No, this an example of a bad design that is tolerated by consumers rationalizing that laptops are short-lived disposable items. This design facilitates easy(?) assembly not easy repair. Given HP's long and horrific reputation for heat-related problems, you'd think they'd make a concerted effort to improve the entire sink setup...especially the fan and easy replacement. I believe it was a Dell I fixed for a college professor that had two fans and easy access doors/panels for cleaning and replacement. Bad design tends to be like cancer and prevails in the end.

I guess that the way that the cooling is applied to the heat sync makes this setup necessary, but Holy crap what a job!!
Good video but be aware that my Pavilion G6 2319 has a different keyboard that snaps in without clips so that was confusing to me until I noticed the keyboard in the video. Good job though it was still very helpful.

This just happened to me. I want to order the fan (ebay) but I am unsure as the ad says "Compatible with Pavilion G6 200 series". how do I know what series my laptop is? Google is not helping! thanks to anybody that replies....
I have a HP Pavilion g6-1d60us laptop and need to replace a bad fan. I want to order the replacement fan before taking unit apart. Some sellers say it has a 3 pin connector and others say it's 4 pin. Need to order correct connector. Do you know which it is - 3 or 4 pin?
I followed the instruction on the video and saved my ass £80. The hardest part for me was removing the keyboard, the rest is easy. I'm chuffed :)

good video but i would advise putting the touchpad back on before the wireless card - as the mother board drops when you turn the laptop over - meaning all the weight of the motherboard is taken by the wireless card
so what happens if after the replacement the fan runs but no more picture loads on the computer? all things are plugged in properly but now? new issue.

There are a few different ones, but this one matches the HP Pavilion g6-2210us: 680551-001
Can anyone assist me I have a hp atheros ar5b125 and it used to turn on perfectly but one I dropped it, still worked well but the computer case cracked a little where the opwer button is and I usually hold it down when opening the laptop to keep the internals from being exposed but it used to cut out (the screen) a little bit when I held it too hard so oneday when trying to open it it cut out for good although the computer still gets power and can function under hdmi projection/ any others. So I'm wonder if anyone could help me resolve the issue especially TechMad

susanne borsboom I would yes, because if the laptop overheats you risk damaging the motherboard and/or CPU
