    If you thought that Intel was going to slow down on its iteration in the SFF (small form factor) system design, you were sadly mistaken. It was February when Intel first sent us a NUC based on Broadwell, an iterative upgrade over a couple of generations for this very small platform, 4" x 4", that showed proved to be interesting from a technology stand point but didn't shift expectations of the puck-sized PC business.
    Today we are looking at yet another NUC, also using a Broadwell processor, though this time the CPU is running quite a bit faster, with Intel Iris 6100 graphics and a noticeably higher TDP. The Core i7-5557U is still a dual-core / HyperThreaded processor but it increases base and Turbo clocks by wide margins, offering as much as 35% better CPU performance and mainstream gaming performance boosts in the same range. This doesn't mean the NUC 5i7RYH will overtake your custom built desktop but it does make it a lot more palatable for everyday PC users.
    Oh, and we have an NVMe PCI Express SSD inside this beast as well. (Waaaaaa??)

    This unit does in fact have 4x USB 3.0 ports. It also had headers on the main board for 2x USB 2.0 ports.

    I tried playing game on this. Practically, you can't play because of thermal throttling start after 15-20 min. But good for CPU intensive application. Game never work anyway.

    PC Perspective - I was told by a vendor that the nvme m2 drives were causing a BSD on this unit (as a reason for why they didn't include the option in their build) - did you see any evidence of this?

    I have Idea for lid build in integrate heat exchange unit connected to replacement liquid cooler for CPU. Another is radio broadcast device and running Linux plus software define radio (GNURadio). Next all ready implement but badly it's project but in my opinion could adding blue-ray and the optical device could be more powerful and output 4K or 2K. So it could be many device that encapsulate NUC inside (ex. Car).

    These old (DX 8.x and some early DX 9.x.x) game titles will (depending on settings used) run pretty fast on any NUC with a Core i3 and up:
    TES III: Morrowind
    Doom 3 (original version)
    Half Life 1 & 2 + expansions
    Thief series: 1, 2 & 3
    Gothic: 1, 2 (& probably 3?)
    Dark Messiah of Might & Magic
    Penumbra (all versions)
    Halo 1 & 2
    GTA III (+ possibly Vice City and San Andreas)
    Risen 1
    Age of Mythology
    System Shock 2
    That's still a lot of gaming fun *^_^*
    *PS:* forget about AA: intel only supports 8x max. and using any setting will force a significant FPS hit :-\

    They are just still too expensive.How stuck for space or portability do you have to be to consider this at just north of $400.

    i never go the point of this high end nucs this has to be like a super niche market no gamer would play games on this and for work i dont need something this powerful and expensive same if i was using it as a meadia center pc i would just get the low end nuc

    • @tmar23
      @tmar23 9 лет назад +2

      Flea hermit "No gamer would play on this" is the most over used argument enthusiasts use to justify their rigs. The games real gamers are playing (search most played games, look at steam's own statistics) do not require the latest and greatest rigs. Real gamers enjoy games for their gameplay and not how hard they push their systems. You turn down the graphics setting because it gives you a competitive edge, it's kids that get distracted by shiny things...

      yea i know that most played games are mobas,wow, and csgo i think but why spend the extra cash on an i5 or i7 when you can pay for less for an amd a10 or and i3 maybe an atom depending on res.i play csgo on my asus laptop wich has an intel core two duo at 1366x768 and i get over 100 fps same with mobas.

    I like the NUC concept, but why are they so expensive? For the same money you get a powerful laptop with RAM, hard drive, LCD screen, trackpad, keyboard, batteries and a charger. With NUC you don't even get a full size HDMI port! Even the Mac mini seems cheap compared to Intel NUC.

    Does anyone know if it's realistic for something like this to use an external PCI-E dock for discrete graphics? Would there be bandwidth issues if, say it was connected over Thunderbolt? I think I've heard of something of that sort before, but it was ridiculously expensive.

    • @RumourRS
      @RumourRS 9 лет назад +2

      Will Chen I use a late 2013 13" retina macbook pro hooked up to a Sonnet SEL with a gtx 960. Thunderbolt is really the only standard right now that can handle the bandwidth of a graphics card, and because thunderbolt can be detected by the operating system as a PCI-E lane it allows an external graphics card to be possible. USB-C is still not there, USB-C only has 5gb/s of bandwidth while thunderbolt has around 20gb/s of bandwidth. While I don't see a point of doing an external graphics card on anything but a macbook (you know to take advantage of that 2560x1600 resolution display), I think it is possible on the NUC equipped with thunderbolt. I don't think this one is that model. Check out the tech inferno EGPU forums, you will get a lot of help there if you are thinking about implementing something like that.

    • @willchen9014
      @willchen9014 9 лет назад +1

      RumourRS Much appreciated! I think that the possibility of a gaming setup with external graphics could really revolutionize the form factor of personal computers. We already have tiny, full-function desktops like the NUC and the Mac Mini, but the lack of GPU horsepower has always been one of the major drawbacks. With the industry push towards power efficiency and low TDP, there are less and less reasons to have full size ATX towers other than for workstations and performance cooling. Very excited to see future developments of the NUC and external graphics.

      @mrlithium69 9 лет назад

      RumourRS USB Type C should be version 3.1 and 10gbps, and you can use that bandwidth so that a cable with a chip in it can convert that to display port: see this cable: www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=102&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030319&p_id=12908

      Paul Doyle That's a neat little gadget! Although I can't see myself taking my laptop apart every time I need to connect or disconnect the external graphics. It certainly works, just not very practical lol.

    • @RumourRS
      @RumourRS 9 лет назад

      Oh yeah, it is definitely impractical due to the costs of a dock + gpu + power supply. It is a very niche market this is for at the moment due to the costs. I just did it to take advantage of my retina display (and games look absolutely amazing on a 13" 1600p display because of the outstanding pixel density (220 pixels per inch on this model i think?). I believe it is still a much better value to build a desktop though which you basically can after spending that much money on an external graphics card solution.

      xxgg This is the 2nd gen of nucs so I expect that they will have lower prices on the third one and the sweet spot will be the 4th gen of NUCs. It's a pretty brand new business model for intel so they have loads of room to improve it.

    PcPer is a great tech channel/site BUT this is pointless at this price, not powerful enough to game etc and too expensive for anything else. A $179 MSI Cubi does everything needed for an office or 2nd home computer.

  • @LonewolfGaming1

    I suspect no one watching this channel will make such a mistake, but just in case: please no one buy this thinking you'll get away with playing CSGO on it! 40FPS is not even close to enough. I thinking showing that benchmark is interesting but please in future make very clear that this is not suitable for competitive games. I see so many people struggling to excel because they unknowingly bought the wrong hardware for the task.
