  • At the sold-out Rock to the Rescue concert at the Bloomington Coliseum REO Speedwagon welcomed both Larry the Cable Guy (the benefit's MC) and fellow Illinois native Richard Marx to the stage but the most unexpected moment of the night came when former REO guitarist Gary Richrath joined the band onstage for the first time since his departure in 1989. Richrath, who has performed live very sporadically since leaving the band, came out to perform on the group's signature 'Riding the Storm Out,' one of many songs that he wrote during his time with REO.

Quite possibly the most under-rated guitarist in rock history.
Gary was a gifted writer, arranger, and shredder. I shed a tear every time I see this video.
    A true Rock'n'Roll Guitar GOD.

Life and love are bigger than the fall outs we have with each other. Look at the life and music they created together. You bet your ass they're glad they had this day. They all showed how human they are by burying the hatchet and letting by gones be by gones.

When I was a kid, Gary Richrath was an absolute god. Guys like him made me want to become a guitar player. And man, I SO tried to get my hair to look like his! Was there anything cooler than Gary in his prime, with that huge grin and Les Paul swung low, launching into the Roll with the Changes intro, playing to all the ladies screaming for him in the front rows? Not only was the dude a stud, he was an amazingly talented player. That's why we still listen to these songs. Guitar players from my generation (and later) all consider "You Get What You Play For" a true 70s rock classic. Sure, there are the hits we all know and love, but that double live album holds a special place in the heart of the guitar slingers. RIP Gary. Hope you're up there playing to those front rows again.

+billymac72 I'm happy I'm not the only one screaming Gary's name. You're right. He was the pinnacle of guitar playing at the time. Gary and Brian May were the heroes of my youth. I know Gary was busy fighting his demons during this video, but we all were...and still are. I can relate to Gary on so many levels here. Except for the fact he changed my life forever. Gary, ever since the early 70's you have changed my life for the better. Thanks for that! I'll be forever grateful.

This is mark Fortman commenting under my wife's name. The rock world is just a little bit lesser with the passing of GR. I 1st saw GR with REO in 1969 at the TeenCenter in Lincoln, IL for 50 cents! He was already very good and he did nothing but get a whole bunch better. He eventually became a virtuoso, having developed a sound all his own. I last heard him in Dec.2014, 45 years later when he sat in with the "new" REO for one song. He sounded great and looked terrible. He looked like he wasn't long for this world and unfortunately, he wasn't. REO fans, especially those from the midwest that watched as REO grew from playing for peanuts to doing bars, to being the support for big groups, to playing with them at festivals, and finally headlining, filling stadiums while having the #1 selling album of 1981 with Hi Infidelity. REO had reached the pinnacle of the rock world. No guitarist ever worked harder or deserved it more than the man from East Peoria, IL Congratulations Gary, you made it the top. Your fans are proud of you and the legacy of great guitar riffs you've left. You live on through your music.

I just saw REO last year in Michigan, hence the photo(thanks again Kevin). Every great band needs a good singer and a hot guitarist. Kevin is a great singer/front man. Dave Amato plays a good guitar but Gary Richrath makes the band great again, as in the 80's. I have seen good cover bands try to play these hot guitar licks and no one can play them like Gary. He wrote them, he owns them! And it's not fair to any musician to try and replicate these. I hope the band brings Gary back full time because the songs will be much better for the FANS. And this should be about the music and the fans!!!! That's what gave REO the great success they have had.

This is so sad. Gary is a rock legend who should've been encouraged to fade away in peace and fantasy. Watching him play here beside his "replacement" is a low blow, whether he wanted it to happen or not. As a legend, he should have walked away into obscurity, being in refuge in that obscurity, and leaving his star-blown image intact. That's how I'll remember him: smiling, doing his magic, rising past the ballad songs into something only Richrath fans understand. A good man, a great guitarist, someone deserving of his story being told. Much love, Gary.

Gary should have never played that 2013 gig.....it would have been better that he hadn't had to endure being up there with his health shot to crap, watching his replacement making "fake smiles" at him, when you know darn well he was thinking "this is the great Gary Richrath." In his youth, he was "untouchable" as a rock guitarist. It broke my heart to see him that way, I wish he could've defeated the enemies of his soul. There's only one way, His name is Jesus Christ the Lord, he made this drug loving hippie a new man !

So we went to see REO last weekend and they were still awesome. Life will never be the same without Gary Richrath's freaky amazing guitar whaling but he was with the band and us in spirit. I personally could do with a little less love ballad and more bad ass real rock but now that I'm 160 years old I maybe needed it and still love the ballads anyway. But that wasn't what I came to see REO Speedwagon for. In my mind it's all about Riding the Storm out, Whiskey Night, Golden Country, Time for Me to fly, you know? All the songs that say get up and keep pushing forward. Those messages and the power behind them and that kick ass guitar of Gary's with Kevin's crazy amazing vocals got me through some bs in this life!! Will always love you guys! Personally, I think it would have been much more respectful of this legend to just give him the lead guitar alone. Dave could've let him have it. Gary is, as always will be a legend. Even my kids who are 18, 20, 32 now like to hear him play when I put on the REO. He was such a good looking guy when he was younger, even as he aged to a certain point. If they did not kick Gary out of the band maybe he would still be alive today. I think he got depressed, his whole life was REO Speedwagon and indeed he was...........REO Speedwagon to all of us. One ogf my all time music hero's RIP Gary.

I think being fired because Kevin had issues with Gary's drinking was tragic for Gary and very unfortunate for the band. Gary had a lot more songs to write. Wish with all my heart he could have made a go of his solo stuff. He put out one album and faded away. I guess getting fired was a true death blow to Gary. Riding the Storm out is Gary's song period.

I'm seeing REO next week. The last time I saw them was on the Wheels Are Turning tour, and to this day I still say it was the best show I've ever seen - the energy, music, just everything was spot on. I know that Gary was a HUGE part of that, and I so wish he was still around. Looking forward to this 'newer' version though!

I was there in 1980. I wish Kev & Gary worked it out, you know, like Mick & Keith got through their rough patch.
Not watching Gary going up to the mic is disturbing. Anyhow, those who know, know. Thanks for uploading.

Seeing this again after his passing really makes you realize how bad off he was. Take a look at the rest of the band (Kevin, Neal, and Bruce), and how they look relatively the same, after all these years.
    R.I.P Gary!:(

They played well together that song, untill the end. Say around 5:20ish, Kevin, Bruce, and David seperated , leaving Gary alone in thecenter of the stage. Kevin acted as if he was giving Gary , the ok to end the song with a swing of the guitar. Gary tried but they kept going. Then Kevin smiled and did it himself , as to say , "I'm still in control here" Gary is/was the better man his whole carrear. "Nobody plays guitar , the way Gary can"
