In the 1980s, the Chinese government used taxpayers' money to support him to study abroad. In the 1980s, not everyone could go abroad in China. At that time, the reform and opening up had just begun. The Chinese government hopes that he can return to China after studying hard to help build the motherland. After getting his doctorate, he did not return to China and stayed in the United States for 16 years. He betrayed his country, got an American ID card, and became an American. He is not worthy of mercy. Let the U.S. government take good care of its people. He has nothing to do with the Chinese government.

Reply to sealtrader -- Home is where we belonged for good. We journey to another society across the sea, but not to plan on staying permanently; esp in NYC where everything appears very expensive; including a dingy apartment. But, really, you should see fairly soon the emerging exodus of multicultural populations out of USA -- who have decided to return back to their native land. The US as an entire society, is right now deep in national debt and it appears gov't has stopped creating new Jobs for their own people. Welcome back home to Shenzhen, China. South China sea was illegally claimed by the ROC in 1946 with the helped from USA during their military alliance in other words Chinese history is a lies 😅😂
Inner Mongolia and Manchuria was inherited from Japanese empire 😅😂
Both Tibetan region and Hainan Island (founded by Tai-Kadai people aka Lao descendants several thousand years ago) was annexed by the PRC in mid 1950 and incorporated into China territory 😅😂

He didn't contact his mother and younger brother in the past decades. Morally or emotionally, his relatives in China don't have the obligation to help him in any way. Great story, a very heart breaking story , Jerry. For the past few years of trade war between USA and China, the USA has been making life difficult for many post doc Chinese students in USA - some have left the USA while others are evicted or asked to leave. Several years ago the British offered a special passport to HK Chinese who want to immigrate to England. Many HK Chinese who immigrated to England under this special passport program found themselves jobless, under employed, or financially broken unable to sustain a normal life given the high cost of living and the limitation imposed by the special passport. Moral of the story: Brainwashed by fancy-schmancy western propaganda too many Chinese think “grass is greener in America.” Truth be told, it just ain’t necessarily so.

He like many should be on disability benefits but he has most likely passed the two years limit to apply before quitting or losing a job. Most people are not aware of this law, actually do not want to be disabled and spend years trying to recover and get better, many not even knowing they are suffering from mental illness. This reflexes the greater problem of social problems of homelessnesses and mental illness in the US and the West. Especially in the US, it’s becoming increasingly Darwinism in the last 20 plus years. When people are dealing with depression, some sort of mental illness, setbacks in life or a major health problem, or a job loss, it’s hard to pull themselves together without family, community and government supports. Housing and foods are unaffordable nowadays, even with people who earns over $80k per year, after taxes and all sorts of deductions , it about $50k and rent for a one bedroom apartment in major cities are from $2,000 to $4,000, depending on the neighborhoods

It's not just some homeless veterans on the streets, in some areas a majority of the homeless population is veterans. It's ironic that the US government has this constant propaganda about soldiers are larger than life, say "Thank you for your service" every time you see a veteran etc. Yet once those soldiers are actually no longer active and retired old uncle Sam just wants them dead. Cheaper that way instead of paying them benefits and taking care of them for the rest of their life. Soldiers have one purpose in the US, to secure nations and resources in foreign lands to enrich the state and private corporations, once those soldiers can no longer perform that duty they are thrown aside.
Of course many of those soldiers too have severe trauma and depression from killing and see people be killed in war, which makes it even more difficult for them to function in normal life. On top of all that a majority of soldiers in the US as hyped up as they are as larger than life captain America super heroes, are really just the poorest and least educated Americans in the country, and once their term of military service is over, they are cast out again to the bottom rungs of society. The USA is a sick sick nation, I would know, I have lived here my entire 30+ years of life...

It is also true that lots of street junkies who choose to live out there happened to have done some stint in the army once. Some were dismissed because they were junkies and mentally unstable or others did their 2 years somewhere in some form and carried on in life to break bad later down the line. So what?

@@peanut0brain your username checks out. No, there is no 'every case is different' and I will teach you, inform you, as someone who knows from doing the investigating:
the vast majority of street panhandlers claiming to be 'Veterans' are not and were never in any military service.
Since I already told you about different kinds of situations and you got confused let me paint with different brushes and colors AGAIN:
Lots of Americans join the army, reserves, various military orgs for short periods of their life.
They did not go to war. They did not go overseas, some did on a boat as a cook for 2 years. Others were in 'reserves' and yes they were on local 'barracks' every weekend for 2 years or 3 or 4.
When you see them 30 years later as street panhandlers it will have nothing to do with their 2 years back when they were young college-aged people but years before their divorce and drinking problems and so on.
Likewise, every Chinese college kid is also 'serving in the military' as reserves. they won't be in a war and yet 25 years later it's of little meaning to say they are 'Veterans' is it? same in most of the USA when someone says 'Veteran' now.
The other ting you want to understand is that the USA doesnt have a communist 'Daddy government' system like China where the citizens are the child-like property of the government Daddy and Mommy so we EXPECT they are to care for their children.
That said, IF any of those junkies and street panhandlers WANT to get drug rehab and housing they can. They do not want it.

The “Chinese wife got green card then divorce him" part is fake....He had a gambling habit as many Chinese Americans...He was a frequent traveler to Las Veges, loss a lot of money, borrowed money from the people around him and became hated....His wife divorced him because of his gambling habit. That was 30 years ago... This is the version spread among people in China town. His younger brother in China basically disowned him because he never care to keep connection with his family all these years. and he never care to go back even when his dad was on his death bed(big no no in Chinese culture).

Take for example and area of Fracture Mechanics. Or Digital Signal Processing, or Composite Structures, or Aeroelasticity. These are very detailed subjects. It takes a lot of time to understand then.
In Fact a truck Driver driving 18 wheelers make more money than a Very Qualified Engineer. Now don't tell me Truck work very hard, Engineers work 70 hrs and get paid for 40 because they are on salary.

I remember being in Sweden in the mid-2000s and seeing crazy homeless women in subways and wondered how such an advanced socialist society has such people.
