Only dude on youtube that took the actual time to do it from scratch and not just sit and point at each component! Helped me tons, everything got easier to play. Thanks!
Yo I was thinking the same. Most had a bass high hat and snare set up already. I can basically do that but my bass drum isn’t balanced and it wobbles. I need to understand. I have played drums at a beginner (to prolly mildly intermediate even) but yesterday I bought my first kit, technically for my 9yo son, but yeah. I never watched him taking apart the dang thing. So I had to wind it on setting it up. And it seems like I have no clue what to do. Toms I screw in keep moving? My high hat is at a really wonky angle, my bass drum has legs that don’t stay in place even after screwing them in. Idk. I paused at 30 seconds cuz I saw your comment and I hope this is what I needed. Seems like it tho. I still love that the seat is called a throne lmfao. I looked so dumb in the drum section of the guitar store I go to.
Big time helping hand out with my own drunset thanks for the help
Great video, very informative to any drummer from novice to highly experienced. I've been playing for 17 years and still find myself rearranging and tweaking. I showed this to my cousin who just started playing and it's helped her approach setting up more logically for her needs.
This is actually really good set up instructions for the beginner (big surprise for a youtube instruction video). This is a step that so many beginner drummers don't even realize as important. I had many young drummers come into my home studio with their kit set up in some kind of really crazy way that made their playing really difficult, and I would then suggest changes before recording, and they would invariably comment on how much easier their playing was, and my goal was simply to get good drum tracks, but was pleased that they benefited as a player.
Glad to see the cowbell. We gotta have more cowbell.
It’s the only prescription..😂
Jecho Joven GUESS WHAT?!?!?! I GOT A FEVER AND THE ONLY PRESCRIPTION IS MORE COWBELL!!!!!!
Lol!!
David McAninch ..Geeeeenne!🧔🏼
Don’t screw this up Gene!.
Thanks, after watching switched the ride with the 2nd crash on the right and lowered the ride down and it really feels better and makes more sense
You sound PATIENT, ATTENTIVE, EASYGOING, MOTIVATED, MUSICAL, Characteristics of a teacher. If your not. then you should consider it.
chode
@@the_wet_snare_ofcl1378 Best.
I love the music that goes on when he's grabbing gear or adjusting something.
Suetup and teardown is one of the funnest things of being a drummer!!!!
Thx to this video i've been moving my drum for weeks trying to find what's most comfortable. For now one thing i'm really sure off and that's that I like my right cymbal a bit more angled, so the cup comes a bit closer and feels a lot more comfortable for me. But as I said I'm still moving around to find what's best :p
I had a Drum Lesson with Dave Weckl a couple of weeks ago and he told me to sit high... I did not see the video that you mentioned but surely he has changed his mind on it... Good video btw
God Bless
Dude, the first video that I've caught I have to say man smooth. That's what they should call you is man smooth dude. I like your setup your approach to the setup. I think it was like. It's very helpful to people and it surprise me that every time you played how smooth it was how smooth it was.
“I’m LORDING over my drum set.” Classic! Thanks for the info. Definitely evergreen from twelve years ago.
This is EXACTLY what I needed, thanks a lot!!! Especially the beginning, I might set my throne too low so my thies are parallel to the floor and as a result, I always struggle with my snare and hitting my legs all the time. Also those pesky toms mounted to the bass drum don't help. I don't know if rim shots are essential, I have my snare tilted to me so I couldn't play those. Will have to get rid of the tilt, it's probably because of the lower throne. Can't wait to try resetting my kit so it feels better. Cheers! :)
I really, really appreciated you showing us how to properly set up a drum set. Just got our first drum set (5 piece Yamaha + China cymbal) and I had no clue how to go about doing it. Being close to your height it helped immensely seeing where you placed the pieces. My setup is now comfortable. Well, for me anyways. My kids are young and it will mean rearranging all the angles, etc but at least now I have a starting point. This was truly an invaluable piece of information and you did a fantastic job explaining things as you went along. Peace.
Thank you Jared! been watching your videos for several months now and finally inherited a kit from a friend, this was a load of help in assembling my first set up! it's just the basics for now as I have a cramped space to put it in (think it'll stay basic though) and I had to look around for some more set up detail but this was a fantastic help, thank you again to everyone at DRUMEO!
Just tried to set up my electronic drum kit (can't get an acoustic one because neighbours) with this video. Thank you very much, it helped a lot! Now my hi hat pedal just has to work and not register sounds with a latency of half a second or even more and then I'm ready to start lessons xD
That's where I'm at. Hard to get it right with such small heads.
I love how that wail guitar track plays whenever you bring something over or adjust stuff
Does it make anyone else mad when he’s about to hit something but he stops right before
if he hits anything it messes with the mic he's talking through
Yes. I was looking forward to that snare rimshot at the beginning.
Edge daddy
not me, nope
At first I thought this was a dumb comment...then i watched the video and I'm totally with you.
Well done, very informative for the beginner as well as the seasoned player looking for some tweaks!
Thanks for posting this!
@nrsrrox960 I love DW hardware. It's so solid and such a well thought out design.
I know this video is super old at this point, but I'm setting up my first kit and this was very helpful!
Wow! This was a long time ago. You have really come a long way, Jared. Thanks for all the great tips and lessons along the way
I’ve still got his original DVD’s When he started out.
wow,,i think this is the first vid i saw your drums without mike on it,and its still sound superb
"If you're really givin'r " love it hah
I must say that this is a great video, Dude. You showed exactly the best way to do things, a lot of tips and tricks, the best order to put a drum kit together and especially the arm length tip for rolls and reaching cymbals. Thanks a bunch for taking your time to do this!
This helped me a lot as a beginner. Ive been trying to find the best position for the last 3 years . As im the same height this feels great . Thank you 👍
Honestly I can't believe you give out all this information for free. Thank you so much Jared for helping me become a better more knowledgeable drummer.
Great video. I too would NEVER attach things to the rim of the bass. Or to the bass at all. Lots of stands can be a trip hazard but you have helped me figure out the best approach for my very vintage and huge (1947) Broadkaster set that has ancient clamp hardware on the tomtoms that I want to keep as vintage as possible. You helped me solve a nagging problem.
I love your vids. I’m starting to play again since high school. 35 yrs ago! 😲😑. Your a great teacher.
I love how he’s giving the tutorial but he’s still adjusting stuff for it like it had to be done at a certain time
This was a great video, I just bought a big used kit and I’ll be setting it up for the first time in the next few days, this helped a lot. Looking forward to watching more of your videos as I’m a complete beginner.
This is the best video by far to set up a drum set. People from the year 2154 (over 200 years from now) will be like.. "Yes, this is how you set up a drum set"
Excellent teacher!
thanks ! 10 years later, this video is still very useful for us beginners !
great tips napoleon dynamite
Lololol
Napoleon Dynamite without glasses! Lol.
@@blakegowan6623 LASIK Napoleon
i can see it lol
You probably smell like mayonnaise and cream cheese.
My best guess for the extra hats is for a differing tone in the overall set. You could, for example, have a pair of hats for more of a higher tone that you would do 16th not work with, and another for more of a metal feel, heavy and kind of loose, but it's just a guess. Hope it helps!
Only just bought my first drum kit,and pretty clueless about set-up,playing etc,but I am a bit OCD and like to know all the 101 questions I wanna ask answered.thanks for this video, its really helping me answer my basic questions about seat height(I'm 6ft6),drum positioning etc..cheers.
A great and in depth video. I like how he stressed his set up works for him and others might have something different. Eliminates the 'cookie cutter' approach. I couldn't help but think 'rack system' though near the end. That's what I'm going to use when I finally get my next kit.
Thank you for doing this. I play the theremin professionally, but have recently started exploring drums a little. I really like this lesson on setup.
This is the first time I saw this video and your setup is the exact thing I'm aiming for since forever. I could not have done a better tutorial! Thanks for sharing!
I want a drum kit like that
Cameron Williams work for it. Capitalism my friend
Who said i had to save?
@@Mscdenise77 if you want to buy one.... you have to save to buy one..
If you have decent credit, most music stores offer financing with no interest if paid within a year or more.
I got a drum set a few years ago... and I basically took it apart haha definitely gonna go home and put back together
Kit sounds great. It also has a nice balanced look to me.
Thanks for taking the time to show how to set up a kit. 🥁 ✌️🤘🇦🇺
HI JARED. - GREAT VIDEO THANKS !!! I AM A NEWBIE ON DRUMS AND FOUND YOUR VIDEO MOST HELPFUL. BEST REGARDS . . . EDDIE ( UK ).
Got a job at Guitar Center, happy this video exists so I can review for customer questions as I am not a drummer
I am in love with that kit, the toms sound good
Great instructional video. Essentially a good position behind your kit is about ergonomics, and bio mechanics. If you want to be able to have a large vocabulary and play lots of different styles fills lick and drumbeats, then you must give thought to your position behind your drums. If you start off in the wrong place like I did, somewhere along the line you find a particular drumbeat really difficult to play - not just because it's hard - but because your making it physically difficult because you're sitting too high, or too low, or you have to reach too far etc., In those situations if you play a 2 hour gig, when the gig is over you're physically totally wrecked with knee-ache, back ache, tendinitis and it's mostly completely unnecessarily because you have a poor position, and poor posture behind your drums. My own online drum academy coming soon.
Thank you Jared. It seems like your videos are tailor made for me. All my questions are answered and then the advice with your personal preference really helps put things into perspective.
I wish I was able to get my tom drums flatter, but they are attached to the bass drum and they are quite tall as well. The angle you have them at is quite good.
My toms come out of my bass drum so I have a hard time getting the toms positioned closely and at a comfortable angle and distance away from me
Clamp them to stands or a rack. It's so much easier to position them.
nolan jones get a second snare stand. I had the same problem and that helped a lot
nolan jones exactly my problem
I know. The struggle is real.
nolan jones What i do and it helps. I raise my toms higher up from my bass drum to where theres a gap between the two and tweak the neck down a bit and move them as close together as possible and play like that. It helps alot
man you'rea great teacher! ive learned alot from you. im actually a guitarist but i been trying to get my skill set up higher so as i can play on my own tunes. i just realised my kit is set up for a short guy! i 6"2! anyway just wanted to say thanx dude!
As a guitarist who has recently gotten into a little bit of drumming, this is extremely helpful! Thank you!
I prefer to have the toms left of the bass drum so they are directly in front of the snare, and place the bass drum onto a 45 degree angle to the right of where you would normally put it so that when you sit on your throne and have your snare right in front of you, you can directly face the audience if you are playing at concerts and gigs rather than having the bass drum straight at the front and then your body doing a weird angle to the left and not facing the audience. Also, for setting up the drums I prefer starting with the snare, then adding everything else. Great video.
@gx1000100 They wobble more then the traditional 3-leg stands but it's a small sacrifice to make if I can properly place my double kick pedal.
I am very glad! i found in all your description and approach to the topic of drumsetup the exact same opinion and time relation figuring this out! conclusion and be sure about it's a hard thing to do! Greetings from Greece! Great job man.
Rack toms further left, floors further right, put a pair of Hi Hats between the 12 & 14 toms, 4 crashes right above the toms, splashes between crashes, 👌👍
Nice Kit! and the set -up is Great. Personally for many years now, I've been setting up my Ride where the second rack tom would go and using two floor toms. Anyone else like that style? I just found it easier to reach. Also, I set up the Cowbell off my first Crash stand, I had to because of playing Blurred Lines to get the pattern.
I love that setup! I was a two up two down player and moving the ride where my 12 inch tom was opened up a new world for me! I believe it is just a perspective thing! Change is good!
kevystead offset rack toms are a good idea because you can still have 2 toms up and have your ride over the kick drum
Great Job Jarred I just got my Digital Drums and I am on my way to becoming a DJ drummer
That's gonna help me a lot! About to put it to practice. Total beginner so wanna get it right!
Your kit sounds like heaven.....
Great video! Just bought my first drum kit, and this video made me realize just how poorly I initially set it up haha
I "thought" this would be boring, but it was VERY helpful! Thank you.
thank you so much. I just bought a new drum and just start to play, the video is so much useful. Thx.
happy drumming
congratulations on your new drum kit! what's the exact model if you don't mind my asking. I just got myself a Pearl Vision VBA Artisan ll NY Splatter last September 2, 2016. Thanks and take care okay!
it's a Ludwig Questlove breakbeat white sparkling. small and compact. Not too loud for a beginner....
This IS a GREAT display of Professionalism...Thanks!
Very good insightful video on the right drum set up for the viewer. Thank you for taking the the time and effort my friend. Be Blessed!
Have you tried a rack based hardware system? It seems like it may be easier for positioning things without interfering boom stands and such
That is one awesome kit and sick playing dude!! 👍 ... Thanks for the tips, I'm definitely going to try this out. Very informative video. Cheers man 😊👍
Hands down the best video. Exactly what I needed to know.
@50pawelcent I've seen lots of drummers so this -- it's if he's playing double bass and doesn't want to play on the ride or open hats, he'll use the AUX hats. The ones he has are permanently closed. I have remote hats on my set; they're fully functional hats operated with a cable. (look up DW 9000 remote pedals)
Another tip with the throne is that if your leg is bend inward its generally easier to get cramps (or at least for me I'm no expert)
Thank you. This is one is the best drumming setup video.
Hello everyone! I bought my first drum set and I only have one crash, my question is where should I put it? On my right or on my left?
Great videos, I have been learning with you guys. Thank you!
(14:58) His words sound like a drum roll here! LOL!
Thanks for the videos! Im starting to drum very soon and i bought a E-drum Set. Its basically a basic set with: hi-hat, snare drum, 2 rack-toms, , 2 floor toms, 2 crash cymbals, 1 ride cymbal, and of course the kick drum. I decided on this setup so far since i wanna be able to really develop my skills on that set into the future. What do you guys think ?
I will add a double pedal in the future and the set has that possibility because i wanna practice double kick techniques (i love heavy metal)
Yeah man.. you pretty much rock! You make me a better drummer and that makes my whole band sound better! Thanks for being so detailed and descriptive!
I'm fat, so not rubbing my legs on my kit is a problem. I am also poor, so your T-shirt is actually true when it comes to my drums. I've always struggled to have a complete, good sounding drum kit so I've been practicing on my mousepad. I'm done crying now.
I always put my 10" on the top left side of my snare and the 12" on the right. Like an upside down triangle. ... perhaps I should try your set up. My style does create a gap between the 12" and the floor tom where my ride sits.
I changed from a 5 piece to a 7 piece, and lately I have been trying to get better acclimated on either a 6 piece or 7 piece setup.
I'm looking to change the formation of my drumkit, this video is giving me some ideas and is very helpful, thanks!
Awesome video Jared!
Best Drum Lessons!!
YOUR SET IS FREAKING AWESOME....
I saw a set up with the Hi-hat and the Ryde beside each other on the left side. It made so much sense to me. Would be nice to set alternative setups rather than just Jared's.
That kit sounds wonderful
When he Said about martial arts I laughed so much?, & I haven't laughed in a while since my older sister passed away. Thanks 🙋♂️🙏🏻👍 Jared.
Definetly better than expertvillage! Great. Do you ever setup a smaller kit? Like a 4pc. I'd like to see that if you do :) Rock on!
If the high hat I. The way, put it on the right side. That’s what WS Holland figured out. He originally didn’t know how to set up a kit. He claims he accidentally got it right, compared to most other drummers. He doesn’t have the criss cross problem that you described. I need to check out some of Luke Holland vids.(Fluke’s son)
Great stuff Jared, keep up the good work !
I haven't adjusted my thrones height since I bought it like 6 years ago. I tried to adjust it a couple days ago, and it didn't work... the screw is like permanently screwed and it would take a hammer to bash it out.
Jonathan Friedman try some WD40 on the threads as the same thing happened to me and WD40 helped just don’t get it on the seat cushion part
7 year update?
Jareddd......that trackkkkk.....was even...bettaaa then the last!!! IM TELLIN YA...YOU GOTTA HAVE THAT COOOOWWBELLL!!!!
cool to hear the diffrence with, and without the mic's !
@pajarillaga1 I use Pro-Mark 707's - The Simon Phillips signature stick.
Im getting my first kit this Friday. Thanks a lot for the tutorial!!
I used to have my ride setup that way. Then I wanted to go for a new feel and setup. So far no issues
This is where every other musician has it easy🥁
Pretty good video, but I'd love to see an updated version with a tad more empathy for people who set their drums up differently for different styles. Surely he knows people who play higher/flatter cymbals tend to be hitting them harder and people with lower, tilted cymbals trend more toward softer, dynamic styles. Also some exploration of setting up the primary ride to be usable with the left hand (such as 1 high tom setups).
What is the technique called that he talks about from 6:18 to 6:27. Ive been playing drums for around 12 years now but came across someone playing like this. He sounds really really good and it seems very effective. Very consistent as Jared says. I want to find a lesson video about it though.
It's a very good video that teach ho you can set up your drum kit almost naturally as possible...I hope that you will make a same video but for setting up a double bass drum kit 🙏🏻😁
Hello Jared, You look comfortable on your throne. The max height on mine is 22". I don't feel like I am high enough and of course, the rack toms can only go so low. Please let me know what height you have, as I am pretty tall too.
Thank you very much man! You're a great drum player!!
