I would always class beginner as affordable (affordable being what ever the person buying can afford), I have seen people with £150 guitar sound like they’re playing a custom shop £5000 guitar. It’s practise, talent and feeling that make the biggest sound difference. I don’t think there is a time to upgrade I think there is just a time to add another guitar to the collection and the time is right when you find the guitar/amp/pedal etc you really want and then just wait till you can afford it. My only advice is buy what you actually want first time round or you will end up buying twice

Absolutely agree! I’m guessing for most people (especially hobbyists), personal financial circumstances is a big factor in what you own. A mate of mine loves playing and although he is in a very good financial position, he never buys guitars over £350 because he doesn’t think he’s good enough, even though he’d love to. I don’t personally agree with that thought process.

Well I've never agreed with the "start on the biggest piece of crap you can buy" theory. That's nothing but a deterrent. I'm not sayn go custom shop out of gate, but spend enough to get something playable.which isn't that much these days. Then if you stick it out you can spend big.

      I like this alot,
I started with my VA reimbursement check on a used $150 Squier Telecaster in Sparkle Red
the next month, a Seafoam Green Squier Mustang for tuned down to Eb for Chris Stapleton and Seether 😂
as a new player, only seriously getting into it since March. And I'm using Rocksmith 2014, because it works.
Im going to supplement with private lessons and even get this old retired salt back into school maybe for music at the local CC
I just bought a "Oh.... wow" guitar for the first time, 90 days into my journey. I say that because every person that's seen it, takes a momeny 😅😂
I needed a 24 fret. Im a Vet. And 5FDP is, well, 5FDP. So for Memorial Day Weekend me and my bois are gonna get "Wrong Side of Heaven" to 100%
the fact that "something a good deal, 24th fret, that can play in B" became a gorgeous Schecter C-1 Steel Mountain in Blood Lava
used at my local guitar center😅
      is just fate ❤
I cant wait to play at my guitar's level. The glowing fret marks gave it away. She's made to play gigs, so I need to get that competent again. This time at guitar.
retired US Coast Guard, enjoyed my 1 hour a day break in boot in band, and LOVED playing TAPS for week 4.

The quality of entry level guitars is so good these days that if you bought a really good one, like an Epiphone in the 500 bucks range or even a Kramer special, you really don't need anything more expensive for a long time. The only thing that's holding you back in that decision making is your disposable income at that point.

I started with a Donner b/c it was stupid cheap and I didn't really know anything about electric guitar or if I'd stick with it. Now like 3 years later I've got a bunch of higher end Fender and Ibanez guitars lol. IMO the right time to upgrade is when you want too AND when you can afford it.

Had a Squier Affinity Strat that I got when I first started learning to play in 2021. About a year ago I started thinking about investing in a Tele as I was committed to playing and was truly happy when I had a guitar in my hands and a Tele has always been my dream guitar. Every time I went into a guitar shop though I tried out different guitars to see if I connected with them and I always gravitated to the Tele. Four days ago my saving paid off and along with trading in that Squier Strat I purchased my dream Fender Tele. I'm going to miss that Strat but if it gets into the hands of someone else who is picking up the guitar for the first time and it inspires them to play and work towards their dream guitar then it was well worth the trade.

I bought a new mid grade Jackson soloist SL3X for $560 a few years ago and have put over $800 into upgrades. That was with me doing all the work on it. I also bought a new Bugera 333xl inferium amp head and upgraded the tubes. I bought a new Peavey 6505 4×12 cab and changed two of the speakers to G12T-75 in a cross pattern. Upgraded the wiring and jackplate. It had 3 sides of Baltic birch plywood, and the back was that particle board, so I changed that to Baltic birch, too. Not only am I satisfied with the sound of it all. I'm happy to say I saved a bunch of money doing all the work myself.

Could be worth mentioning the Positive Grid Riff. A smartphone/tablet/pc or laptop/mac plus Riff and the bias software gets you into modelling for the cost of a tubescreamer and cable. Useful utility around an upgraded guitar or amp.

  • @wildesage4172
    @wildesage4172 Год назад +2

Darrel Braun (who y'all should check out on YT) put it best: a good (tube) amp is the ultimate equilizer. Meaning a quality amp will sound great whether you're playing a $200 or $2k guitar. When just about every professional guitarist you've ever heard on a record chooses tube amps, it's reason to stop and consider if maybe you oughta go with one. Not because they're "better" (that's subjective), but because that's The Sound. It's either a tube amp, or a very good emulation of one. For modern guitarists using pc plugins, same: those plugins ain't emulating solid state amps! It's tube amps, across the board. When you realize that, it's pretty clear; if you're a guitarist, you should probably have a tube amp. I started on acoustic, then went to Tele + Blues Jr. and never looked back. Invest in a few pedals a year, you're good. If all your effects are built into your amp, then you're stuck always having to buy multi-fx amps; otherwise you lose all your effects. So you're stuck buying in one lane. And your sound will change every time you change amps. Pedals + Tubes are The Way. You can go PC, but just know it'll never match the room presense of a tube amp (IMO). Even if you run it through a cab, there's a feel response to tube amps that can't be emulated (again, IMO). No latency, no computer involved, just sound. They're great.

A fender mustang or boss katana are great amps! They have presets, can get more presets from the internet, sound great and best of all won't break your budget. I don't even look at amps at the music store. I mainly look at guitars that I can't afford. Multi effects pedals are fun. As long as your rig isn't boring there is no need to upgrade.

For what I spent for an Epiphone player pack 2 in the mid 90s you can get a Boss Katana 50 MK2....wow. those types of amps didn't even twinkle in someone eyes at that time. You had 1 8 inch speaker bass, mid, treb, volume, and drive/gain and IF you were VERY lucky some crap reverb. Man, times are good for guitar players.

So my upgrade path as I have been learning has been all about amps. I started with a second had multi-effects pedal (Boss ME25) and headphones, but I needed to hear the sound in the room. "Upgraded" to a little Blackstar Fly, but that didn’t cut it. I tried lots of Biss Katana's and modelling amps but I didn't comprehend what was the sound I was looking for. So in the end bought a cheap valve amp (not the Harley Benton tube 15, but essentially the same in a different box) and here, my education truly began. Just upgraded again, to a cheap new limited edition Marshall DSL402, at £100 less than that DSL20 and I love it !

I know have a PRS custom 24 and I have gotten 0 compliments on the sound quality. If you've got the money for a new one and you're unhappy with your old guitar then go ahead but if you're still happy with your old one then maybe get another amp or some pedals, that will have a massive effect on how the guitar sounds

I think the amp Is as important as the guitar:a Gibson played through a crappy amp Will Always have a crappy sound,if you play an Epiphone through a good amp It Will have a great sound...so for me the amp Is Just important as the guitar (and among the amps no Better the the valve ones if you look for a warm, round tone)...in the past l played my Gibson and Epiphone through a Plexi 100w Marshall(and have to use pedals and limiters of Power because l don't gig in stadiums😂)...now all l Need Is my guitar,a good jack and a Fender Blues Junior lll...no more pedals Need and the sound Is Just great👍👍👍 Keep on rocking and keep It simple🤟🤟🤟🎸🎸🎸❤️

In my Opinion guitars of Burny or tokai are closer to Gibsons than epiphone.

Add strap locks to your upgraded guitar you don't want nothing bad to happen on stage crash and there goes a expensive guitar

What should you upgrade first? Well that can be broken down easy. Are you looking to improve your tone, get the amp. Are you looking to upgrade your playing feel / experience, get the guitar.

but it's taking this old concert level trunpet and piano boi into a rock dreamer
playing way, way too much Jukebox Hero 🎉😂

Regarding upgrading the amp: Wouldn't it be better to get a great clean amp that takes pedal very well, instead of buying a great modelling amp.. as you can improve the clean amp due to new, better pedals all the rest of your guitar career, but you are stuck with the quality of the modelling amp as it is?

You don't need a new guitar to play heavy metal, a strat with a seymore duncan jb jr humbucker sounds brilliant

I want to say class d amp "D" not really mean digital, class D ,the "D" little bit misleading , in term of power amp, the amp part no such thing digital amp really , just different way to make sound .

Epiphone is supposed to be intermediate now? That annoys me because this is paving the way to accept all these ridiculous price hikes for a Far Eat made guitar like Epiphone.
