Highly agreed. The thing is a gentleman regardless of whatever he is consuming or doing, he should do it with proper manners and class. If he chooses to drink alcohol, he should do it properly, moderate it or choose not to drink it. A gentleman has true control over himself as a true conqueror is someone who conquers himself.

A gentleman should never feel the least discomfort over asking for a non-alcoholic drink. And a gentleman should be just as pleased to serve a guest a non-alcoholic drink as one containing alcohol.

Agreed. I'm a salesperson so have to entertain frequently. However, I'm trying to greatly reduce the alcohol consumption to improve my health and be more aware of my diet. As I never want to discourage anyone else from having a drink, what are some other discrete non- alcoholic drinks could order from the bar? I don't like bitters.

Went to the Symphony this passed Saturday evening. At the bar before dinner I ordered water in a highball glass, over ice with 2 olives. Have done this for years and no one notices. In stead of a $12 dollar drink plus tip I drop $2 in the tip bucket and the bartender was my friend for the night. Been doing this for many years and even those who know my drinking habit compliment me on my "style".

*AWESOME! Thanks for covering this! We must all have power over the bottle and social expectations, never vice -versa.*
An occasional drink, small amount, to relax after a busy season or to relax on a holiday or special meal ok, but in any and every circumstance we must have the power to choose to respectfully decline, even if we feel we should have it, or especially if we feel we need or want a drink. Never let it rule us. Men, have overriding power, politely. Save your brain and liver health.
    *Respect to you!!!*

I came to idea of cocktails late. My prior experience with hard booze was SHOTS only. I had no idea I was allowed to SIP it, till a whisky bar in Louisville, KY opened my eyes.
Now I can enjoy a high end whisky or a cocktail on a winter's evening in-front of a fire.
A seltzer is always good in replacement for or in between drinks, still feels like you are getting a BITE of something.

Club soda and lime is my go to when I don't want to drink alcohol. Club soda and a single shot of gin, tequila or rum is my cocktail when I do want to imbibe.. I usually just nurse one, however, to stay sober. I ask for gin in a tall glass with ice or up without ice in a martini glass. I order my soda with rum or tequila in a rocks glass with ice. A wedge of lime livens up both drinks. I like to be specific about the glassware with the bartender as presentation is big part of the cocktail experience. Drinking alcohol with sugary mixers speeds the absorption of alcohol in the blood stream and quickens inebriation. It also promotes the storage of fat since ingesting sugar with alcohol blocks your liver from burning fat. No gentleman should have a gut from drinking too much, nor a DUI.

This is one of the most FANTASTIC and IMPORTANT videos ever to appear on RUclips. Most of the relationship and societal ills are associated to alcohol. I've also seen quite a few instances wherein persons were fired after engaging in alcohol related bad behavior at company parties.. There is considerable peer and social pressure to drink during meetings and gatherings. This video provides an elegant way to avoid it. As well, engaging in artful conversation with others who are intoxicated is a very subtle way of gathering valuable intelligence information. Let us not forget the wisdom of the ancient Roman, Pliny the Elder, "in vino veritas" (In wine there is truth), i.e., people under the influence of alcohol feel more free to tell the truth. Information that your boss, or his or her companion may not normally disclose, or hint at, might sometimes be coaxed from them when they are intoxicated. Just be careful not to put yourself in a situation where unfounded accusations might be made against you later, as this also tends to occur. Has anyone ever seen James Bond drunk? I haven't. Perhaps Bond has made a prior arrangement with the bartender to provide him just water and bitters, shaken not stirred.

I drink alcohol about once every other day, usually a craft Stout with dinner, however, when I dont drink or dont feel like drinking with company, my favorite alternative to alcohol is tea. Personally, when I have guests over they're just as excited when I break out my Gong Fu tea set with a fine quality white tea (2022 Silver Needle for those interested), as when I break out a fine bottle of Porto or make cocktails. It also fulfils the social aspect that alcohol has when brewed Gong Fu, as the tea ceremony/brewing is by its nature a social event.

This is a great topic. I’m a sales guy, been alcohol free for over 3 years and it often comes up in conversation at dinners entertaining clients. The worst part is, once the topic comes up everyone feels the need to talk about how they rarely drink. Truthfully I don’t care how much or how little they drink and I don’t like that people feel the need to explain themselves because I don’t drink. The best servers are the ones who discreetly serve 0% beer or sofa and lime. I will be trying sofa and bitters, thanks for the idea!

Lots of people my age don't know how to drink in moderation and enjoy booze properly. Since you made in the past a video about books that young gentlemen should read, you should also make a video with movies that young men should watch, in a simmilar manner.

Excellent video. Personally, I have found that my nights of larger alcohol consumption is typically linked to wanting to keep the night going. The longer time you are out the more likely you are to drink more drinks. A great strategy to avoid this is to break up your alcoholic drinks with something like a club soda and bitters or just a sparkling water. It keeps a drink in your hand and doesn’t disrupt the mood.

Truthfully, the best way for a gentleman to hold his liquor is in his hand.
I often will buy a drink, gesture with it, point with it, have a sip, then... forget about it. Lose it. Or if I have to, spill it with much hoopla and loudly ask for another., but if you are skilled, you can make a single drink last all night.

I don’t drink, never have, never will. I’ve found that even the people who are very uncomfortable with it or even offended tend to get over it pretty quick once conversation gets going. I get to drive home safely when ever I want, don’t risk my reputation, and I get a good nights sleep! That being said, I don’t judge others for choosing to drink. That wouldn’t be very gentlemanly;)

I personally has been off alcohol since 2016. Since always have been loving a glass of beer, i now drink non alcoholic beer. Instead of a drink i usually take a clubsoda with a lemon or a glass of water with lemon. All my friends now of my non alcoholic habits so they offer me non alcoholic beer or sparkling water. I personally serve those who want it alcohol but i do not consume it myself.
That tip about clubsoda and bitter is something i will test myself this summer.

My reason for staying sober is mainly out of feet of getting addicted and because of health, my career path is basically impossible if I where to get addicted to alcohol because as an arborist you will always need your full 100% of your brain capacity focused on the dangerous job at hand so if you even have a slight hangover that can already affect your concentration and as a pilot you might even be declared unfit to fly with an alcohol addiction.
Furthermore there are no proven health benefits that are solely linked to drinking, you might argue about the dopamine it releases but then take a piece of candy or some other less dangerous unhealthy things.
I do love alcohol free mojito 😅

I don’t like who I turn into when I am drunk you really do lose control over yourself. so from that point onwards I have never had anymore alcohol I never liked the taste anyway to be honest.i used to have a verbally abusive alcoholic neighbour so I have seen first hand how self destructive alcohol is he just couldn’t live without it from the time he woke up to the time he went to bed he would drink all day and all night. and he was so unpredictable it was horrible to be around and it really reflected his view of himself and his behaviour towards other people as well.even when sober I think he always had alcohol in his system he was just in varying states of being drunk… all of his behaviour was the total opposite of what we are being educated to do in this community. I am happy gentlemen like yourself and the other channels within this community exist it has really had an impact on myself. Keep it up sir.

Well done James for making this video.
From a spiritual perspective alcohol, especially wine, had its purpose in the past. It was needed to bring human consciousness fully into the material plane by forgetting the spiritual connections and developing sciences of the material world. This was achieved roughly a century ago. Since then humanity is on an ascending curve. The new goal is to start remembering the spiritual connections again whilst having a scientifically inclined mind, to eventually be spiritual scientists. The spiritual life can be free of superstitions, it can become a path of scientific and artistic knowledge.

Not alcohol-free, but I have to be careful with it because I'm super lightweight; sometimes even a beer or two will get me drunk. I am above average with my faculties while drunk, but I still am wary of being drunk with people I don't know VERY well because I might say stupid things if I'm drunk. I'm a terminally online gamer so my sense of humor isn't everyone's cup of tea when I loosen up too much. While being a cheap date is great for my finances, I don't actually enjoy the feeling of being drunk either. It makes me sleepy.

In England, soda water is free in most bars (most only seem to have it on tap).
I often ask for a soda water with ice and slice, then offer to pay to give the barman the pleasure of saying ' No charge'. It's win/win ! Also a glass of bubbles in ice with a slice of lemon looks sophisticated to. So it's win/win/win !
Almost forgot - and you're staying alert too! so it's win/win/win/win!
Certainly I've found barmen are always more cheerful giving you a free drink.

I can't drink, because I have a histamine intolerance (histamines are found in a lot of alcohols, especially wines). It results in, among other things, flush, and wheezing/coughing fits. I'm already an asthmatic, so I don't need any extra excuses to start coughing.
I can have the odd drink, but more than one or two glasses will have me panting like I'm about to drop dead, so if I socialise, I'll have, at most, one drink. Otherwise, I just tell people I can't drink, for medical reasons.

I love a drink but as I've got older, any more than three leaves me feeling totally lousy the next day. It's a complete waste of time and unfair on my wife and kids. I try now to stick to that three drink limit.

He is also shown drinking water in s6 when he’s sober- everyone’s reaction makes it very difficult to stay on path- his decision to drink wine was a conscious one not due to peer pressure-> this should be a gentleman’s aim

I'm so glad you made this video because i) being drunk is certainly not gentlemanly and ii) alcohol is really damaging to the body (in any quantity) and being in good shape and healthy is essential if you want to make the most of your life. My personal solution is to drink just a sip or two and only on special occasions. That soda and bitters sounds like an interesting compromise though - will give it a try!

Club soda tall. Lime wedge makes it look like an alcoholic drink. It’s important to bear in mind that some establishments put nonalcoholic beverages in completely different glasses… So sometimes I will bring the bartender in on the caper and make sure that she gives me my non-alcoholic drink in a regular glass… That way, I avoid the tedious questions what you’re not drinking tonight?

I do enjoy a nice drink, and although admittedly I've been guilty of having one too many here and there, I never allow myself to lose composure or self control to the point I lose my manners or become a nuisance to the people around me. A lot depends on your alcohol tolerance, but in general, balance is the key and I recommend that approach to all drinkers. Getting a nice buzz can lift your mood and lower inhibition, but it's a small art maintaining the positives of it without succumbing to the negatives and making a fool of yourself.

I drink very little alcohol and have no spirits at home at all.
I never drink at home without guests or alone.
I do not need alcohol and always found it strange when men showed me their emotions and touched me when they were drunk.
People who are aggressive or even violent after drinking alcohol are extremely unpleasant!
I drink to enjoy myself and not because I have an addiction problem.
Since I have to take medication regularly, I think carefully about when and how much I drink.
I had a fellow student from the upper class who was a whiskey expert and always offered me very expensive types of whiskey.
I also knew a rich champagne fan. However, even after drinking 20 bottles of champagne, I was never interested in this sparkling wine.
It is a fact that some young men know whiskey very well and they are already real collectors.
The main problem is, when people are forced by their job or their private life to drink alcohol regularly.
Some men are weak and being not strong enough to ignore the pressure by such groups.

Most, if not all bitters contain 35-40% alcohol. Granted, one can’t get intoxicated from 5-7 drops of it in a nonalcoholic base, please do understand, it still is alcohol (for ones who’ve had substance issues or don’t drink at all for medical reasons)
