Yellow had better Pokémon following mechanics than games that came out 20+ years later.

I like Pokemon Yellow so much that when it got re-released for the 3ds virtual console, I made it a mission to do catch all 151 Pokemon in Yellow. Something I was unable to do so as a kid since I have no link cable or friends to trade with.
I have 2 units of 3ds. I couldve saved money by downloading Red in one and blue on the other. But I had to choose Yellow on one then both Red and Blue on the other since I prefer Yellow.
The problem with pokedex completion is, Red and Blue only needs each other to complete it. (Granted one version must be played again in order to get the 3rd Eeveelution and starter)
Meanwhile Yellow had to trade with BOTH RED AND BLUE to complete all 151. I forgot the entire list but some Pokemon are only in Red (Like Electabuzz), only in Blue (Like Magmar) or only in either Red and Blue (Like Raichu and Jynx) but not in Yellow.
I have successfully collected all 151 Pokemon.
I named my character Ash and my rival as Gary to reflect the anime and I even made a team loosely similar to Ash fitting for a game loosely similar to his Kanto team.
    -Pikachu
-The 3 kanto starters (all fully evolved for the pokedex)
-Lapras (because in his entire journey, Ash surfed on Lapras the most.)
-Pidgeot (because Ash had Pidgeotto for the majority of his kanto adventures. In the Kanto league, Ash rotated between Muk and Kingler but he didnt travel that much with either.)
I cant copy how Ash beat brock in the anime but in the game, I used a Butterfree with confusion.
Then similar to the anime, I removed Butterfree from the team after I was done using it for Flash to get through Rock Tunnel. (If Im going to use Flash its on a Pokemon I wont use anymore)
I choose Butterfree to mimic the iconic moment in the anime where Ash had to say goodbye to it.
I even made sure to beat Lt. Surge's Raichu 1v1 with my Pikachu and to sweep Sabrina's team with my Pikachu alone to mimic the events of the anime.
Im glad I choose Pidgeot too because when Ash's story ended, he became a world champion. He decided that his goal was not to be a world champion but a Pokemon master and his definition of a Pokemon Master is to befriend all Pokemon. Though offscreen, Ash's journey continues.
As usual, Ash decided to leave Pallet Town with just his Pikachu. Team Rocket gathered all of their old Pokemon to capture Pikachu and they almost succeded.
Pidgeot swoops in and saved Pikachu then Pikachu blasted off Team Rocket one last time. As they blast off, Team Rocket promises to also continue their journey in an attempt to catch Pikachu.
After 2 decades, Ash got reunited with Pidgeot and they started to travel again together.
When Ash left the anime series as the protagonist.
    His final Pokemon team was.
    Pikachu and Pidgeot.

      Hey Garchomp.
I'm just like you. I have 2 3DS's and both have all of gen 1 and 2 lol. I only need me to complete my pokedex haha.
I hadn't followed the anime after the first couple seasons but thats very wholesome that ash ended his journey with pikachu and pidgeot.
Thank you for watching and sharing your story.

@@Livvvid thanks for the memory lane with your video. Pokemon Yellow holds valuable memory for me as it is the only game where you could mimic Ash's team from the anime.
Either you have to trade to get more thsn 1 starters or one of his Pokemon is extremely rare you might as well just dont try like his shiny Noctowl.
His championship team is literally impossible to copy too. His team has Z-move with Pikachu, Mega Evolution with Lucario and Gigantamax with Gengar and Pikachu. All 3 battle gimmicks are impossible to be in a single game. (At least today but also highly unlikely in the future as battle gimmicks tend to only be one per generation with the except Gen 7 where both Z-move and megas exist)
When the Gen 2 virtual console got rereleased, I used my leftover savefil from Red and Blue along with silver on the other card to complete Gold on my main 3ds since like Yellow with Red and Blue, Crystal also need both Gold and Silver
I used the coin case glitch to get Celebii and I eventually completed all 251 Pokemon.
My team was something a typical Gen 2 player would have except for Xatu because I want my fly to kinda make sense...because its psychic. Lol
      Xatu
      Sudowoodo (mandatory encounter)
      Shiny Gyarados (mandatory encounter)
      Umbreon (From Bill's Eevee)
      Togetic (from Elms Mystery Egg)
      Typlosion
Nowadays I can trade online or use Pokemon HOME to transfer pokemon from my extra game. I have a living dex now in my Pokemon HOME. I am both a competitive player(doubles VGC) and a shiny hunter.
But back then, It was humble beginnings. No one with trade and/or battle with. 😅

I remember it being winter 2001. I was already living in California and went to visit my dad to Chicago with my mom and sister. I attended 1st grade there, so I went to visit a friend from then, and he had Pokémon Yellow. I asked him about it, and he told me it was like in the anime. He had two, and the other one was sealed cause he had gotten another for Christmas. He gave me a new 1st edition that I still have today.

I can’t believe this game is 25 years old. But after having blue and yellow, I really like this game because it seems like a challenge. You only get one starter and even though you can’t choose what it is, the game is interesting having Pikachu along with you and being able to get all three starters.
It’s weird that they never replicated this in any other game besides, let’s go, which was obviously a remake but I guess it seems like it was one of a kind. I got this game when it came out in 1999 and it was a lot of fun.

Enjoyed this chilled out retrospective! My aunt in Connecticut bought me Yellow for my birthday months before it ever came out in Ireland and everyone else in my class was so jealous. It was a great day! 😂
I'm actually replaying Yellow right now (the Yellow Legacy mod) and having a lot of fun. I have to admit, I've never actually played past Gen 2...might have to finally change that.

@Livvvid We did get it, Pokémon was insanely huge here too, but back then a lot of kids' franchise stuff would arrive here a year later than America. We would always be one year behind the current season of Power Rangers for example! Nowadays in the Internet age, everything comes out mostly at the same time.

Pokemon Yellow was my first video game. I got it on Christmas in 2000. It was pre-owned along with my Atomic Purple Game Boy Color. I honestly don't remember my first team and who I used to enter the hall of fame although I'm certain Pikachu, the starters, and maybe pidgeot were used because of the anime. I probably also did the thing were one pokemon was high leveled while others were underleveled and revive fodder.

Pokemon Yellow was my introduction to pokemon and my first video game in general. My dad bought me the gameboy bundle for Christmas in 1999 and it is still with me today. The sprite work for the pokemon i feel was at its peak with that game. It is probably the nostalgia, but i feel that the sprites from gen 2 on never matched the love and quality of Yellow. Over the years, my yellow cartridge has gone through hell. My brother went through a phase of ripping stickers off of stuff and unfortunately, Yellow, Blue, Silver, and Emerald were all targets. He drew on the back of Yellow with sharpie and when it came to Blue, i had it in a plastic bag with some other games while riding my bike and the game got eaten by my bike spokes. Luckily, the board was fine but the game shell was torn up. I recently referbished my old games with metal game shells from boxypixel and now Yellow, Red, Blue, Silver and Gold are all looking better that ever in nice shiny metal shells and holographic stickers. I still have my original ruined shells on display as art pieces in my living room now.

I preferred yellow as it had some better color and after Brock the gym leader pokemon are higher lv then red and blue. Played it as a kid but downloaded it on my 3ds. Almost painful to play these days

Also tended to box Pikachu as it did nit evolve and odyen used the 3 of starters instead. Since the game gives u them early u can still sorta pick yer starter

Eh I wouldn't say Let's Go is hand-holdy, it is just that they are very simple games that are like a mishmash of modern Pokemon and RBY which can make things kind of awkward and weird to play.
