People like Jhoto it’s just hard to play a whole 8 badges of main story where nobody uses anything stronger than level 35, and then in “the best post game of all time” you are once again stuck fighting Pokémon much weaker than your party will have been at that point in the game
@@Thibbs-vp6gmIs it that hard? I don't think so. I personally love exploring the region, soaking in its culture and environments, and preparing for the Elite 4. I've replayed GSC probably 15 times at this point and still love it every time. Sure, it would be nice if the game distributed EXP and levels better and had frontloaded the Johto Pokemon availability, but they didn't, and the resulting game is still a masterclass in Gameboy/ Gameboy Color RPG game development--flaws and all. These games are nowhere near as bad as people they are nowadays, but I do think some of the criticisms it gets are warranted. The games really pushed collecting Apricorns and giving them to Kurt, but glitches and programming errors make it so none of the Apricorn balls work as intended. So if you’re not aware of that, you’ll be doing a lot of grinding and waiting for nothing, since all of those balls are useless to you-especially since Gen 2 makes you wait a whole day just for one ball. And if you want to add a new team member in Kanto, you’ll be stuck doing a lot of grinding, especially since some of the new Johto Pokemon, like Houndour and Misdreavus, are only available in Kanto. The wild Pokemon in Kanto are incredibly low-leveled and don’t scale with you like they do in every other Pokemon game. Trainers in Kanto are also unbearably low-leveled, so pretty much all of them are a cakewalk. No challenge whatsoever and that makes it slower to level up.
@komarunaegi7460 not sure if you have finished the video but I agreed with your criticisms. I think they are fair criticisms. I just think the rest of the game is such a fun experience that it outweighs the blemishes.
I think if you look at it from a game design standpoint, Gen 2 of Pokemon is the perfect example of how to make a sequel. They built upon previously established concepts perfectly by expanding typing interactions and building their roster of team options with 150+ more Pokemon, plus they had the added surprise of being able to go back to Kanto and collect the originals. There was no need to reimagine the formula at this point like so many games try to do now and they understood that. 10/10 part of my childhood 😂
Born in '95, played through Red, Blue and Yellow before I could read. Silver was an incredible step forward, the Johto games and their remakes are my favorite games to this point. Great video.

Good video. I always like listening to retrospectives of my favorite games. I'm 31 and Silver was my first Pokemon game. Gen 2 will always be my favorite gen and Lugia has always been my favorite Pokemon. Seeing it in its own movie was awesome 24 years ago.
In terms of sheer effort, Gen 2 had to be the highest effort games Game Freak has ever produced. Everything great about these games was done on a GBC cartridge. Sure, later efforts are obviously superior in almost every way, but the DS is practically a supercomputer compared to the GBC. These games even had features that later games would not get again until Gen 4.
@@Livvvid Yup. Same goes for the lv70 Ho-oh in Silver. Come to think of it, I think the lv60 ones in Crystal are without their signatures too. Edit: Confirmed, so if you want them with their signatures in Gen 2, gotta get them in their home game. Or do Stadium 2.

What I liked about Giovanni in the Team Rocket plot line in GSC (that I think HGSS did a worse job of) was making it ambiguous whether or not he heard the signal from the radio tower. And even if he did, he might not have heeded the call because he said in RBY that he was going to give up his life of crime. HGSS gave a better explanation as to why Silver was a dick, but I didn't really like how in HGSS they made it so Giovanni DID hear the signal and WAS planning to go back to Team Rocket. But ended up not doing so because the player defeats him in the cave. That just rubbed me the wrong way and I think it trivialized his character growth near the end of RBY.
Yeah I actually agree. The ambiguity is much better. I would have taken the Silver origins snippets but actually bringing giovanni back into the games and interacting with him I didn't like.
Gen 2 Was amazing I remember being blown away by all the new Pokemon and features it's been awhile since I last played it gonna grab my anbernic rg35xxsp and fire up gold team ampharos here haha hope ruby & sapphire is next.

Thats how I always head cannon'd it too. Even when playing as Gold I had this deep respect for Red and felt like a usurper lol. Thank you for watching Shawn I appreciate you.
I think we were all super shocked and amazed and surprised of going back to Kanto. It was a huge cap nod to the original Pokemon players of Gen 1. I agree that the playthrough for the Kanto region was underwhelming because of how easy it was but the climactic battle with red at the end... oh my God. I don't think anybody won in their first try took me at least three or four
These was such great games as a kid and I spent countless hours playing! Going back to Kanto was amazing for completing the main game! Loved it! Just wish there was more new Pokemon to catch in Johto than having to wait to go to Kanto eg Houndour! Also Blues gym isn't made of lego, legend has it that they are Poke Balls of all the Pokemon he has captured. If you count up all the balls it equals all Pokemom apart from the legends and Mewtwo that Red caught! Thought that was pretty cool!
Hey brood. I didn't know that about blues gym thats cool. I agree about the Johto pokedex early on. I would have preferred more new pokemon upfront with ones we recognize coming later. Thank you for watching and commenting I appreciate you!

These games are not bad at all, they're quite great. I think the real peak of pokemon was Gens 2-6 and that's all I'll ever play again. Heartgold/SoulSilver are seen as some of the best games in the fandom by a majority of the fans still which is nice, but Gen 2 gets a LOT of slander sadly nowadays. Some criticisms are valid but the good outweighs the bad easily I feel.
here what I think: I love the way the game is presented. the gameboy 8-bit sounds and gbc flashy colors combined with the more detailed sprites and even little animations in Crystal. it's all great. I don't agree that relying so much on kanto is a flaw, I like the familiarity of it, it allows for probably the best fan-service of the franchise in being able to revisit kanto and fight Red and the whole thing feels like a sequel to an iconic generation. only the brand new johto pokemon need to be better. I like that some of the new pokemon are locked in kanto. having 'johto' pokemon locked in another region feels weird when said like that but I see kanto as the postgame and, well, the other games also lock cool new pokemon after the league. it makes exploring all the areas more worth it. again I just wish the johto pokemon were stronger. the mystery egg in Crystal add more replay value as if you can get a Jynx, electabuzz that get ice punch or an electric that learns thunderbolt at a decent level, it's all good. just like in the first games you also get an eevee pretty early, it even got 2 more evolutions (gotta sell more goodies) in fact I'm not a huge fan of the johto pokedex, I feel like there are way too much 'kawaii' pokemon, and that the devs just thought about selling goodies as the first games were mania-inducing famous. I still like the first stage starters and misdreavus but most just have that simplistic banal bland happy face. and fighting types are finally good. amen
Hey pikmin (I've never played those games but would like to cover them one day). I agree with many of the things you said. Especially the merchandising angle. you seem pretty balanced in what you like and don't like about the gen and thats where I was coming from too. I acknowledged some of the biggest flaws but I don't think they outweigh the good aspects of these games. Thank you for watching and the great comment. I'm not sure what I want to cover next, anything you'd like to see?
well yeah you should try playing the pikmin games. it's unique and one of the 4 actual Nintendo franchise. I guess you could make a video about pokemon brown or kotor since you're tackling classic pokemon and seem to be into star wars and rpg. titles like 'the first proper pokemon hack' or 'why was old bioware loved' when I don't like something I can be dismissive and in bad faith but about things I like I try to be fair because I know it's by revealing and accepting negatives that you truly appreciate something. I can still be wrong about the negatives but at least I have good intention about the stuff that matter to me. it's cool you're liking the opinions i'm sharing
The chief of this game was badass. Is like Elon Musk working in a Tesla with the mechanics to make the car how it should be. 2 regions, 16 badges on a single cartridge
I bought a boot leg as a kid Or it was in a different language I think it was French I played this whole ass game not being able to read what was going on as a 8 yr old lol And I loved it ! And yea I did beat it
Great and nostalgic games. My biggest gripe I have is WHY are Houndour and Murkrow in Kanto? These are Johto Pokemon. Why add them and not let you use them for most of the game? Your only Dark options are Umbreon and Sneasel, of which Umbreon is the only strong option. HG/SS improved a lot for these games, but I get how nostalgia plays a role in preferring the OG Gen 2 experience. Also, WHY did they remove Mareep from Crystal 😭
All great criticisms. I remember seeing hondour for the first time in kanto and being furious as a kid. Like why couldnt i have this 10 badges ago? lol. I fully concede my nostalgia takes a big seat here for sure. But I think some (not you) calling these games awful or worst in the serious are going overboard. HGSS are my favorite games if we count remakes, if not its these. Thank you for commenting and sharing your thoughts.
@ They aren’t bad games by any means. Crystal on the virtual console (if you picked it up before it went away) is a great way to experience Gen 2 since they added the odd egg and Celebi. I still prefer playing gens 1 and 2 via the transfer packs on N64 and Stadium 2 due to the speed up option and pc management. HG/SS are among my favorite games as well. I wish there was an equivalent for Gen 1. Although it has had many remakes (FR/LG) being my favorites, it never got the Gen 4 upgrades that Gen 2 got without changing or taking away too much (Let’s Go).
Im glad people had fun with this region, but when i have Ruby, Diamond, and Black to compare it to, i don't see how, especially since the reboots make the "classic era" WAY more fun to revisit. But hey, y'all get after it, good for you.
@@Livvvid in a way, yes. Granted I'm not THAT familiar with your channel, only subscribing recently; I assumed you already have. I didn't mean that in a bad way, I just prefer Gen 3 through 5 over 2. Hell, I'm probably one of 5 people who still like Gen 6, yeah, I'm THAT guy.
I took nothing in a bad way no stress. Gen 5 is actually one of my favorites after 2. Now.... gen six? We'll need to have a talk lol. Thanks for subbing this early on, it means a lot to me. I'm excited to cover so much more.
@Livvvid I like Greninja....and I watched that season of the anime, more than any other season outside Sinnoh and Journeys. I understand why people don't like it, but Mega Evolution sold me on it.
Okay, Mega's were amazing and I think it was a huge mistake abandoning them. I'm sure z/a is only bringing it back as a 1-off but if they brought it back permanently I would love it.
many disagree, some in these comments. I'm fine with differing opinions though. I actually like the discourse conversations so long as it doesn't get personal.
Yeah for sure. And when you think about it contemporarily as kids, this was the game we'd be playing for months. That's why I don't do ratings or anything. How can I fault the game for a feature that doesn't perfectly reflect my specific desires or circumstances as an adult? That's why I think people who played it at the time will always have a different look on these games. I was a kid when they released. I had nothing but free time outside of school to explore, wait for events, and anything else in these games.
@ you nailed it on the head. We didn’t know what would happen when we caught all the unknown or level up dunsparce to level 60 haha honestly I wish someone would make a video touching into that aspect more. You and tamahero did a little bit.
People overreact about Whitney she was not that powerful it was so easy to catch a ghastly earlier and her pokemon would be useless am I the only one who always caught a ghastly to evolve
don't agree. Gold and Silver had issues. Level curve, gen 2 pokemon found in kanto only, gym leaders and elite four using mostly gen 1 pokemon, Kanto feels barren and empty, several areas closed off, etc. And the remakes didn't even fix these issues aside from bringing back the closed off areas. Johto just doesn't have any good games. I am sorry but it doesn't.
Heartgold and Soulsilver fix a LOT of issues with the original -Phone calls are no longer forced but theres more dialog and worldbuilding that occurs through them but its optional now -Kurt's PokeBallsa re no longer broken and actually work -Silver has way more character development Johto has great games, HeartGold and Soulsilver are seen as some of the best games in the franchise by most fans still so I'd have to disagree there
@@shewolfcub3 no it didn't. It left the major issues in and was even as slow as the other gen 4 games. And it is a lie to call it the best games in the franchise because of how horrible the games are. HGSS is the worst remake in the franchise and nothing will change that. Why people continue to defend a heavily flaw game like the Johto games is beyond me. Johto games is staying on my bad games list.
GSC is the GOAT generation.

I played this whole ass game not being able to read what was going on as a 8 yr old lol
And I loved it !
And yea I did beat it
If you could play these games on a bootleg with french text and enjoyed it, it has to be good, Oui?
thank you for watching and commenting.
They are not "great". They're the best
So you're saying you want me to cover gen 3, 4, and 5?
Lugia's name is said like... The word "loogie"... and "uh".
Nobody else is correct.lol
On the tantrum thing.
Let's be honest. There are sore losers in real life. So, why would the Pokémon world be any different. Subbed, btw.
hey thats true lol., Thanks for watching and subbing I appreciate you
It's always been great. Is there really people that don't like it?
many disagree, some in these comments. I'm fine with differing opinions though. I actually like the discourse conversations so long as it doesn't get personal.
Johto is my greatest of all time, HGSS is a height that I unfortunately don't believe will ever be met or exceeded again from the series.
I honestly don't either.
gold n silver great coz . . . its survived againts inflation, shrinkflation, copiumflation n doomflation lul
Hahaha yeah the Johto economy is just fine.
You forget the unown pokemons
You're right. Because I honestly hate them lol.
Nothing could make me hate Gen 2
Nothing could make me happier than seeing you back.
I already know they are but let me watch an essay to reaffirm my points
I started making content to fuel my echo chamber. Get in here.
For the algorithm🎉
Hey I appreciate you. It does help for sure.
@ I appreciate you touching on the different times. Gen 2 was meant to be long played over months along side Pokémon stadium 2 not speed ran
We didn’t know what would happen when we caught all the unknown or level up dunsparce to level 60 haha
honestly I wish someone would make a video touching into that aspect more. You and tamahero did a little bit.
OH MY GOD I DID THE SAME THING WITH DUNSPARCE LOL.
I was like "This things GOTTA have an amazing evolution" hahaa
fakehoax, wheres UN news and many international orgs
It's Cyndaquil not Cyntaquil, lol.
Look It took me 20+ years to stop saying "Rat Uh Tat Uh" instead of Ratt Uh Taa.
Let me have Cyntaquil.
@@Livvvid 😂
tentaquil
incorrect fact pokemon crytsal legacy is a better version all around. nintendo gave us baby games crystal fixed that
Thanks for watching and subbing I appreciate you.
Hey its your opinion and its still welcome. Whats your favorite gen.
Heartgold and Soulsilver fix a LOT of issues with the original
-Phone calls are no longer forced but theres more dialog and worldbuilding that occurs through them but its optional now
-Kurt's PokeBallsa re no longer broken and actually work
-Silver has way more character development
Johto has great games, HeartGold and Soulsilver are seen as some of the best games in the franchise by most fans still so I'd have to disagree there
@@shewolfcub3 no it didn't. Johto games is staying on my bad games list.
don't ignore every positives lol
but i'm glad someone isn't glazing hgss
I also think they're not the best
Too easy and all the new Pokémon are in post game. Besides that all time favorite”crystal”
