Caprine Craft Ep.1 | Processing Raw Wool

- In the first episode of Caprine Craft I show you how I process a raw sheep’s fleece from dirty wool to hand spun yarn.
Edit/Please read if you’re processing a fleece
I’m realizing that I forgot to mention is that your wash water needs to be HOT. My tap/ water heater is set very high as we don’t have children or anything. You might need to supplement yours with water you heated on the stove. Also if you are washing a large quantity it might be best to not let the dirty wash water go down the drain, I’ve never had an issue with that myself but have seen other people say that it could damage your plumbing. Happy processing and spinning!

I’ve never seen the process of making yarn by hand from the raw fleece. I found it very interesting. Thank you.
I’m so happy you found it interesting. Thanks for stopping by 🤎
Love the episode and your channel. As someone who learned the hard way, you don't want to be doing the washing in your house where the scoured off lanolin will go down your pipes. It isn't an inexpensive fix, especially if you have a septic system. Thank you for putting the warning in the show notes.
Thanks I’m happy you enjoyed. I feel like it has a lot to do with the quantity you’re washing at a time/over time. But I wanted to make sure people were aware of the risks.
LisaR; Love seeing so many young people spinning & sharing what you do ! When I first started spinning , the type of fleece was limited - mostly commercially prepared merino ... Shetland is such a beautiful breed & a really good one to try( I think) if just starting processing your own ;)
Well done ❤❤❤
Hello and Welcome! I think it's very important to keep skills like spinning alive! I love shetlands and shetland wool I also think its a good type of fleece to start with. Though I have to say this Jacob fleece that I'm working on in the video is a joy to process and spin. Anyway, thanks so much for stopping by!
This was so informative! I have zero knowledge or experience with spinning but I do want to learn. Your video broke it down really well, and I’ll definitely be revisiting this one in the future!
Oh I'm so pleased you thought it would be helpful. I hope you have fun on your spinning journey.
This was so soothing to watch, so happy to have discovered your channel. Happy spinning ❤️
Thank you! I love your channel. Happy spinning to you too! or gardening at this time of year!
I really loved this. That colour is beautiful and the process so interesting. Thank you
Thank you! So happy you enjoyed.
so glad youtube recomended this! i also, love watching how things are made :)) and loved this one, your pace and vibe is so calming
Aww thank you so much! I'm happy you could join me
I raised Jacobs for years and they do have quite awesome fiber : ) their fiber is great for making a natural gradient yarn 🐑
Aww I love this! The gradient yarn is such a good idea! I fully intend to buy another Jacob fleece at some point when I finish this one. Happy you stopped by 🤎
What a fun episode 🎉. You made it look so simple. I wish there was someone close who could show me how to spin 🧶🤗🙏🏻
Thanks so much! I was worried that maybe people wouldn't like it because it was a little different. So I'm really happy you enjoyed it. Have you looked to see if there is a spinning guild in your community? That can be a good place to start. Also sometimes someone you least expect to be is a spinner/fiber artist, you never know who might be around. I hope you can fulfill your spinning dreams.
Thank You for sharing your talent along with explaining things in a down to earth way. You are a delightful person.
Ohh you are too kind! What a compliment! Im so happy you enjoyed. Thank you
Fab podcast …. I have been spinning for a couple of years … have bought a fleece this year and so found your podcast really helpful and will get started now having seen how to begin!! Thank you x
Thanks so much! I’m happy you are enjoying my videos. I hope your fleece processing goes well!

Loved this! Thank you 🤗
Happy you enjoyed :)
I loved this! I'm planning to get a flock of sheep soon and start spinning my own yarn and you just made it look so simple and fun! I look forward to more videos like this! :)
I'm so happy you enjoyed it and found it helpful! I'm hoping to continue the "Caprine Craft" series. Maybe a spinning one will be next. It's so exciting that you're getting sheep. I hope they bring you so much joy. Feel free to reach out here or on IG if you have questions.
@@caprinecottage Spinning would be a great next episode! I have an antique spinning wheel but I've been too intimidated to really give it a shot so I'd love to see your process! This is my other youtube channel by the way, and I've just subbed with both accounts and will definitely go follow you on IG! Thanks for putting content out there that keeps these important crafts alive! :)
☺️ Hi on your other channel. It will definitely happen eventually. I just have to figure out to how to best show things. Thanks so much for joining me here and there! I also feel that it is important to keep craft alive in our collective consciousness. 🤎
That was cool to see! I really didn’t know how that process worked. Thank you 😊
Thanks for joining me! I'm happy you found it interesting.
Loved this episode. I really want to learn to spin & process fleece. So thank you so much for this taster.
Oh I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it! Hopefully someday your spinning dreams come true. Thanks for stopping by!
Beautiful, start to finish.
Thank you so much! 🤎
Love this! You made it easy to understand. I also don’t know all the correct terms but I understood. Exactly what you were saying. ❤
Thank you so much! I'm happy you liked it and understood.
Thank you for this awesome channel!! I would love to see some of your weaving!! Im a fellow fiber person all though I haven't had time to make anything but shorts on RUclips, i do a lot of tablet weaving and just love to see other weavers
Thanks so much! I am currently moving my studio space (within my house) so I haven't really had the space for weaving but hopefully soon!
We all start somewhere, I was making shorts/reels for years before finally taking the plunge to start this channel with long form videos. I bought a inkle loom a couple years ago with the intention of using it for tablet weaving but I haven't gotten around to warping it yet. Happy to have you here. :)
The whole process is really quite fascinating, I appreciate you showing us, and you made it look so easy too... not sure that I could do it though, there again, it's something that I've never tried so who knows 😅😂😂 but thanks again for sharing 😊 ❤
I'm sure you could do it! haha Thank you! I'm happy you enjoyed it!
New subscriber. This was a great video, I’m currently washing a blue texel fleece, it has the most glorious colours in it. I think I’m going to drum card some and see what I get from the blend, but I’m also going to do a chunky yarn directly from the washed fleece for peg looming. Isn’t it an adventure! Thank you for sharing your process I’m looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Ahhh this all sounds so great and like lots of fun! I love how each fleece is different and with every type of fiber prep you can produce something new! I’ve never spun blue texel wool, but it looks lovely! I’m happy you enjoyed watching. Thanks for visiting! 🤎🧶
@@caprinecottage some fleeces are like poetry for your eyes, blue texel is exactly that for me. Thank you for the welcome 🤗
Just like cotton candy. Do you think hundreds of years ago they had rules for knitting and spinning etc, Nah Love what you do. I took lessons twice before I got it . heck out Ailbiona McLochlainn- Emma from Woolly Mammoth fibers interviewed her. Her patterns are beautiful and on my list to knit. Emma's podcast is nice too. Homey like yours. Comfortable. She's in Ireland. Thanks you are doing Great.
Its so soft! Thats so sweet. It's definitely true. I get a little nervous putting myself out there. I love both Albiona McLoachlainn and Woolly Mammoth Fibers/Emma's channel! Thanks so much for your encouragement!
I love that ancient skills are still treasured ❤
Me too! It is our job to keep them in our memories.
Honestly captivating to watch! Thanks for sharing ❤
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching :)
Beautiful, Anne!! Love getting all of these peeks at your life too ❤
Aww girl thanks! miss you!
I've had a fleece for a couple of years that I've been rather intimidated to start, but I'm going to do it! thanks you made that look not so hard. I also picked up loads of alpaca in all sorts of colours from a children's farm, have you ever spun Alpaca? I think I'll need to blend it with something with more grip,??? Lovely video thanks
Thank you! I’m happy you found it to be inspiring. You can definitely do it! One thing I’m realizing I forgot to mention is that your wash water needs to be HOT my tap/ water heater is set very high as we don’t have children or anything. You might need to supplement yours with water you heated on the stove. Also if you are washing a large quantity it might be best to not let the dirty wash water go down the drain, I’ve never had an issue with that myself but have seen other people say that it could damage your plumbing. I have spun alpaca! I find it very difficult to card as my drum carder is not made for such fine fibers but when mixed with wool it goes alright. And it makes the yarn so so soft! Good luck on your fleece processing adventure!
This was very interesting! Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
That was fascinating - thank you! Do you have plans to show weaving also? I'd love to see that too!
I'm so happy you enjoyed. I would love to show some weaving process but it will be farther down the road. I'm currently moving studio space (within my house) and everything is too messy to really get the looms going. I feel like with the busy farming season starting I won't be in the new space until the autumn but hopefully weaving will commence then. Thanks for stopping by. :)
@@caprinecottage Oh gosh - good luck with reorganising! I'm here for the journey, so when weaving happens it will be a nice surprise! Thanks for great videos.
Thank you! 🤎
