I own a 101D, DX10, FT-710, FT891, 7300, 590SG. My rigs in order of preference (taking everything into account) are: 101D, 590SG (with TCXO and SDRplay), 7300, FT-710, DX10, FT891. It really comes down to what you are prioritizing. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses.
"Nobody ever reads the manuals." I dunno, I've had my FTDX10 for two weeks, and I can't tell you how many times I've referenced the excellent manual. Love the rig, by the way. Purchased from HRO Portland.
The first thing I do with every rig I have ever owned, after unboxing and looking at how nice it looks in the shack, is to read the manual from front to back! I usually download the PDF version fro the manufacturer as It is easier to see and navigate on the PC monitor. I will then print out, on 8.5" x 11" paper, the sections that I feel will be needed the most and keep it in the drawer of my desk. I do have to say that my favorite HF rig is still my Kenwood TS-830S, complete station. It was my father's until he passed away and left it to me in '95.

Looks like a nice entry level HF or for somebody on a tight budget. I don't know why so many think this radio was intended to compete with or replace the FT-991A or the FTDX10. Yaesu needed a radio to replace the FT-450 and fill the gap between the FT-891 and the FT-991A. This radio fits the bill. I wouldn't mind owning one.
At around $1,300.00 I wouldn't consider it an entry level transceiver! The FT-891 is more of an entry level rig than the FT-710 is. Not everyone, in today's economy, has that kind of money to throw around! Especially the new, younger hams!
@@jfrphoto01 If price is the issue, then I'd suggest an ICOM IC-718 for about $650. You can find them used for $350 and up. Much easier to operate than the FT-891. I have a Yaesu FT-891 and like it a lot. But I wouldn't consider it an entry level radio compared to the IC-718.

@@jfrphoto01 The 891 is a very underestimated radio, I got it to work portable mostly but use it in my sitting room connected to the Chameleon MPAS 2.0 with CAP HAT on the front lawn and make contacts all over the world with it on 20m. This is my setup when I don't want to go to the shack or abandon the XYL for hours, I can listen and work digi modes without disturbing her or when she's gone to bed I can have voise QSO. I work PSK31 and Olivia with this setup too. With FLrig it's a lot easier to use and change bands and power etc but once used to it it's simple to use and all the heavy menu stuff is set once and forget. I had the Xiegu G90 and the 891 is a massive improvement, audio quality and receiver performance trash the G90, the audio via headphones is just amazing to listen to. If I was on a budget buying a first radio for the money the 891 is impossible to beat mainly for receiver performance and sound quality ( via headphones ) A tuner if needed does add to the cost but if got 2nd hand like I did the 891 is a fantastic radio and beats the pants off the 450D in performance and sound quality too, not happy with the Audio from the 450D at all, it's quite poor, the 891 vs 450D audio is night and day different also compared to my old 7300 the 891 beats that by miles in audio quality, again, via headphones, I'd have the 891 over the 7300 any day.
I didn't really get the feeling it was, but it does look that way in the video. I'm sure with more time in front of the radio I'd be able to compile a list of likes and don't likes.
Not just the AF gain knob. It looked like all the small knobs were mounted on spring shafts. Makes me hope it's intentional, like a short "rubber" shaft segment designed to absorb shock. Or it could be flimsy plastic shafts. Disconcerting effect, either way. If I owned an FT-710 I'd carefully pull off one of the knobs first thing to see why they're wobbly.
I think a lot has to do with licensing and whatnot, but it would seem to me that it makes it a bit easier to experiment with some older tech we dont mind heavily modifying and seeing what we can make work on these radios. Might as well just make do with whats there, and if weve got old equipment kicking around maybe someone comes up with something cool. Just trying to find something good about it i guess, and amazon does still sell monitors with the DVI-D input, though I plan to go with the adapter to hdmi myself. I havent seen anything online yet, but I've been hoping someone would try a TFT monitor and let everyone know if it works just like the screen on the radio itself, or if we absolutely must use a mouse too. I dont care to spend the extra money just to experiment, but i did see some smaller cheap ones that might be worth trying out, though I'm guessing given the older technology probably not. Ive been trying to decide between this one ane the IC-7300, and I'm really leaning toward this one I think.
Really like the form factor of this rig. Interesting they stuck with a DVI video out, which would work for me as I've held onto a few obsolete PC monitors. Worth the purchase to replace my lost Yaesu world map!
No need for HDMI as there's no audio to pass to the monitor and HDMI requires a per-unit license fee. DVI to HDMI adapters are very cheap, so you can use your modern monitor with no problems.
HDMI would be a complete waste because the resolution is so low it would be worthless. You only get something like 800x600 resolution on a big screen and it doesn't look good, I don't know why they bothered. Same on the FTDX-10. A higher resolution at least 1880p would have been great.
Rather a DVI or VGA than HDMI. HDMI are prone to make RF interference unless you have an exceptionally good cable. Had 4 wireless mics blocked by noise on a musical, turned out it was a slightly faulty screen on the lightconsoles HDMI cable. Had 3 channels blocked at another musical, culprit was the HDMI monitor used by the video crew.
Hi Julian, Steven Spence here (KF6TSD), former MESAC member (moved to Boise in 2006, then to Florida 2 years ago). Found this video as I was planning to upgrade my well used FT-100D to an ICOM IC-7300 but then started looking at the FT-710, mostly because of the external monitor connection feature. Not to put you on the spot but would you recommend one over the other? I am researching many reviews now on both, it appears the FT-710 may have a small advantage in the auto tuning function as well.
These companies really need to start changing the way they develop their hardware. How are they launching a new radio at the end of 2022 with a USB-B and DVI port? Even if they started developing this 5 years ago they could have included USB-C and HDMI or DisplayPort output. I have a bunch of old spare LCD monitors and none of them have DVI ports.
HDMI costs money to license, which is probably the reason Yaesu didn't go with it, not to mention that no audio is sent to the external monitor. But yeah, move with the times.
@@HamRadioOutlet good point about licensing, but DisplayPort is a VESA standard and royalty-free. For the radio to have a long lifecycle these parts should be modular.

I've been through Yaesu and Icom service manuals and noticed that so far they have tended to use Japan designed microcontrollers (Icom seems to like Hitachi, now Renesas). Unfortunately Japan's big 3 Hitachi, Mitsubishi and NEC were kind of lagging in microcontroller innovation (part of what lead to them all rolling into Renesas, IMO). The H8-family micro that Icom has in its 7100 was kind of pitiful (again IMO) even at that radio's launch. These days there are any number of highly integrated ARM micros ready to interface to LCD touchscreens and any manner of A-to-D and D-to-A subsystems and fully capable of doing the DSP themselves (the IC-7100 has a TI DSP co-processor). Better yet, micros like some in the STM32 family also have native USB support and some with HDMI/DisplayPort support. But most of these microcontrollers are NOT Japanese.
The only thing that I'm little disappointed is the DVI output instead of HDMI or DisplayPort with sound support. My screens has no more of the obsolete inputs.
They were probably concerned with the connector staying connected. HDMI cables fall out or get destroyed easily while DVI locks in and has the same quality signal.
I've still not paid attention to the radio in this first review...I'm still mesmerized by the range on offer in HRO (yep, I'm in Australia.....). Looks a decent radio though from my quick glimpse.
Based on past history of the FT-897, I have a strange feeling that the display will be the first thing to start showing problems. I just hope Yaesu had the foresight to have an adequate supply of spares available.
I _still_ have a brand new, unopened in the original box; Yaesu FT-991A that I purchased roughly two years ago! Has my 991A been rendered outdated by this new radio? Where does the 991A fit in the spectrum of Yaesu transceivers starting with the 991A and working up to the FTDX-10? Keeping in mind that I _still_ do not have a license nor does my paygrade come even remotely close to that of a Technician's level of knowledge. I had plans on learning the radio strictly on the receiving end while I study for my license(s). But alas, life happens and we must address those events accordingly. Stay classy my friends.
You are still in really good shape with the FT-991A. It has 2m & 70cm all-mode capability, which neither the FTdx10 nor the FT-710 have. The FT-710 is marketed as an entry-level radio, below the FTdx10. The FT-991A was introduced in, I think, 2016. Technology always advances.
I have the 991A and will not be getting it rid any time soon..... its just too dam useful having 2 meters and 70cm included... Not only that but it performs superbly an all the bands... A keeper for sure.. Its a shame the DX 10 didnt have the higher bands included.. oh well..
Being a relatively compact radio, it's easy to travel with. Having the detachable speaker with a janky cable connection rather than an integrated speaker is possibly a recognition of exactly what you're saying. Traveling, and on field day or at events you'll likely be using cans anyhow, so the speaker can stay home. If you want to put external amplification and quality audio transducers cause you like great sound, you can, and ditch the side speaker also. Seems to me it's just added value and front-firing has some advantages in clarity IMHO.
It looks like the top mounted speaker in the main radio case is actually larger than the speaker in the side mounted box. Decades ago in the CB era, I had a curved plastic device that would stick on the top or bottom of a radio and direct the sound to the front. For such a simple device they worked quite well. I wonder if anyone else remember those?
I think the side speaker is probably a little better quality and the enclosure helps also. The external and internal speakers are supposed to work together.

@@BryanTorok The "using both speakers at the same time"-thing is how the AESS works. You adjust the levels of each speaker to make the audio the most pleasing for your personal preference. An interesting concept. You can, of course, adjust them so that you only hear audio from just one or the other, or unplug the external speaker. It will be good to see how the FT-710 stack up against other radios, I agree.
There's no import duty on radios made and sold in Japan. There is import duty for radios built in Japan and sold in the USA. There's also import costs to ship them here. There are also state and federal taxes, so it's not really fair to compare prices between countries.
@@HamRadioOutlet It's difficult to compare, and largely irrelevant, in the UK there is 20% tax plus import duties, the home market of Japan is different to the USA or UK.
For anyone thinking of buying it in Japan and shipping it to another country because it is cheaper, don't forget there's no warranty coverage when you do that! If it broke, you'd have to ship it back to Japan to get it fixed at your expense.

i keep them folded and put away as i do not like the "fold" look in them. maybe one day i can find one that has never been damaged by folding it. only rolled up in a tube.
This is 2022... Wondering why on earth there would be a DVI-D as the only video output option. I'm sure you can go directly to HDMI with a regular DVI-HDMI cable, but still.
I wasn't necessarily saying it should be HDMI. In fact, my thought initially was that it should be Display Port, which superseded DVI-D well over 10 years ago. It's a current standard and as far as I know, it's a royalty free VESA specification. I don't know about consumer grade, but pretty much every business grade monitor has Display Port natively these days.
@@mikeschmalz2031 Display port, HDMI, DVI, they're all the same thing. Just get an adapter to whatever your monitor takes. DVI is convenient because a lot of people have junk monitors from 10 years ago that use this standard that would be perfect to stick on a radio.
@@stuartross It won't look good, 800x600 resolution on anything more than a radio size screen looks poor, this is why there's no HDMI socket because it would be a waste of money. I feel that the 710 could have had a much smaller screen, more buttons and higher resolution out for waterfall would have been amazing but the FTDX-10 video output is the same. Still an amazing radio though and no doubt the 710 is too. Most radios have low resolution output.
The burning question i have is the rf gain similar in working to the dx10 (which is just fine )? Or because it doesn't have a front end stage is it a disaster like my ic7300 or most other pure sdr rigs ? A proper rf gain is a must after experiencing ic7300 rf gain rubbish ?
IC7300 is direct sampling DSP and yes can overload the front end although I seldom have an issue with it. The FTDX10 and FT710 is not, they are IF DSP, 1990s tech with improved DSP. SDR simply means can upgrade the software. I do like my FTDX10, but IC7300 has more operational features and easier to use. The large menu in the FTDX10 is not so friendly, continuously having to go to it. But that has been Yaesu's approach for years like with the FT991. I do like the speaker mounting on the side of the FT710, is different.
@@n9eerptr thank you for your thoughts . I know my priority of having a good working RF gain control is overlooked by many hams . Some even think it is simply a 'mute ' control? Especially in very general noisy environments, however if like me you are used to the benefits of a proper working RF control, using it to lift the noise floor on top band people would start to see the benefits? Only if all they have for reference is a high general background noise and a icom ic 7300 i can understand why they think of a RF control is simply a mute control ? I still like my icom ic 7300 in every other respect , and is much more user friendly than the ftdx 10 that my friend has (he also has the ic7300) but the dx10 RF control just works ! The ic7300 is indeed a mute control. Hopefully this new ft710 will be similar to the ftdx10 in operation ? My understanding was the new ft710 is not hybrid like the dx10 ? So my concern is it might perform like my ic7300 which is very poor in lifting the noise floor (it doesn't it simply attenuates) Especially on low bands ? We will see in the coming weeks all about the pro's and con's . Tks again for your feedback.
@@robduncan599 I see the RF gain in the IC7300 as an attenuator, it does decrease the signal along with the noise as the S-meter indicates. I would suspect this is done because of the direct sampling and ADC conversion. The DSP remains in full operation. The IC7610 functions the same way. So does the RF gain in the FTDX10, it does reduce the gain of the front end with increasing the ALC voltage, just the S-meter continues to show the max level of the received signal, but the noise is greatly reduced, a most liked feature. But what I like most about the FTDX10 is the knob for adjusting the IF bandwidth and adjusting the band pass. Having quick control of these offers some advantage in adjusting for better reception. I use them a lot. I was looking for the adjustment on the FT710, maybe a menu items. Question for you, what do you mean by hybrid??? In the old days it meant part of the radio was solid state with some tubes, usually in the final. Of course not what it refers to today.

Obviously we would be those people that are fully aware of the warranty breach and are fully intimate with a soldering iron. Any chance it's identical to the 991a?

Having the FTDX10 for about 2 months I have not opened the manual much. If one is familiar with typical rig terminology it is rather easy to work with the FTDX10. There are some issues to learn, setting up each band and mode the menu settings go with each band setup. Drove me nuts when going to a band in CW, but the BK-IN keying was off. And after selecting menu with FUNC it sets the knob for that function, set to CW SPEED then the knob stays with it. Just some small things that are different from other rigs. The calling of memories is easy, but did take some learning on how to use them.
Curious if it had a peak reading meter and when you were transmitting it operated like a CB meter the needle was just bouncing I was curious if you can make it peak reading and smooth while it's receiving anyway it's a nice looking radio I like the blue but I'm sure you can set it up the way customize it the way you want thank you for sharing it really enjoyed it and happy holidays

@@donalfinn4205 Sorry... I was agreeing with your wish... it would be better to have one key jack on the front and another on the back, so you can choose. There is no key jack on the front of the radio.
It's part of the AESS system, so yes, it comes withe the radio. Or you can buy the FT-710 Field version, which does not come with the external speaker (and therefore does not have AESS until you add the external speaker). You can always follow the link in the description and see exactly what you get.
From the description on the video, it appears that Yaesu has dropped supplying the headphone adaptor and spare fuse, if they are penny-pinching on those items I wonder what internal components they are also penny-pinching on? This concerns me as I live in Asia for 6 months of the year and will buy it when back in the UK in Jan next year, I don't want a radio with inferior components that could fail and be unable to get repaired until the warranty has expired.
There was no headphone adapter (maybe there is not much call for it anymore?) in the box, but there is a spare fuse. It would make zero sense for Yaesu to use inferior components that break during the warranty period where Yaesu would have to pay for shipping and the cost of repair.

all manufactures know about when parts will fail. that is why they have short, or otherwise unusable warranty's. as they do extreme testing on everything. just to find the avg fail point.
the 710 does not have some of the features that the ftdx10 has...its a lite version of the ftdx10...just picked up my 2nd ftdx10 and i love having two of them!!!
is that high qrm across the 40m band from strong signals or is that qrm from a switchmode powersupply or another device in the house ? i wonder how the yaesu ftdx10 would handle that same qrm in 40m, because if that qrm is away in the ftdx10, that means its qrm from strong nearby signals, which the ft710 can not blot out because it doesnt has a roofing filter. i want to hear a side by side comparison of the receiver in SSB voice with the Icom IC-7300.
That's QRM from every other store nearby! There's a laundromat next-but-one store away, for example, with dozens of massive electrical motors spinning away 12 hours a day. Every radio suffers from the same QRM.
Look on the results of the receiver comparison by Sherwood engineers. Two Yaesu transceivers in the top three in the world (the FTDX10 is the third receiver in the world). By comparison, the IC-7300 isn't even on the front page. I am sure that the FT-710 will have a much better receiver than the IC-7300, although it is only SDR. So there is not much to compare, except subjective feelings, but they do not matter much.
@@Sylwester_Krolak the 7300 has an industry quality a/d converter, but the ftdx10 (ftdx101d/mp same) has only a low quality cheap commercial a/d converter, accordingly the 7300 sounds better (clearer and more detailed). the sherwood website does not show a measure for that at all but other measured values of receivers, accordingly that sherwood page is not telling the whole truth about how good these recivers really are. you and alot of other people are (apparently) not aware of that. the ftdx10 is much more immune against inband strong signals, i admit, but the ft710 on other hand has no roofing filter and no preselector either, so that advnatage of higher immunity against strong inband signals will (very likely) not be excistent in the ft710, at least the 7300 then sounds better for its higher industry quality a/d converter as i write in the beginning of this comment. i would then rather have the better sounding 7300. i want to hear side by side comparisons on weak ssb voice signals in bother receivers, the 7300 and the ft710, together with strong signals on the side too, that will then tell which one is better in what regard.
@@Sylwester_Krolak I judge a radio by the receiver performance and audio quality, the 891 is right up there and the FTDX-10, Yaesu have nailed it when it comes to audio quality. I had the 7300 and the audio quality used to wreck my head, I had to have NR on all the time and it effected the sound quality, I live in the country with little to no qrm and the 891 beats it by miles both on receiver performance and sound quality via headphones, I always listen via headphones, you can capture weak signals in a way not possible with speakers, to my ears anyway. Now I have the FTDX-10 and it's an amazing transceiver, not perfect, yaesu could have done better in some ways such as allowing live typing with keyboard for RTTY and PSK31 rather than use macro style messages. Allow the mouse more control, have high resolution video for large screen, the video out looks horrible on large screen with 800x600 resolution, this is dumb. But the FTDX-10 is an amazing transceiver so no doubt the 710 will be too. As a FT-450D replacement I would not consider the 710 that because it's too expensive, the 891 is a fantastic entry level radio and it beats the pants off the 450D on receiver performance and sound quality.
Interesting first review, but maybe I need to wait until a few have been sold to evaluate the actual day-to-day performance against the proven FTDX10. I will then purchase either the New 710 or the DX10 depending on reviews by other amateurs. But at this moment the 710 is at the top of my preference list. 73s G1DYL
The FT-710 and the FTdx10 are different radios. If it comes down to the choice of the FT-710 or the FTdx10, you should probably go with the FTdx10. The FT-710 is a step below the FTdx10. Also, this wasn't a review, just an introduction to the new radio. 🙂
I am a Yaesu guy. BUT, not much to look at. Is it menu driven? I realy like my FTdx3000. Switch antennas, split antennas. Quick access to the knobs. Nice map though.

I don't think so, but I didn't get a chance to look at the radio in-depth. I've heard Yaesu say that they don't believe in averaging -ask John Kruk for details.
I have seen a couple of reviews but not sure of if anything major that will be different other than a price range. Maybe an upgrade power module can be available in the future?
I own both . The 710 makes for a much better portable rig because it only draws 1.6A instead of 2.6A on RX. It also weighs 1.5KG (5 pounds) less, and is easier to operate in the field because the front-panel is less cluttered with large rubber buttons. The ATU tunes much wider too, the DX10 refuses to tune wider than 3:1, and the 710 can match 5:1 - again useful in the field when running temporary antenna installations.
Must just be me then that thinks it looks like a very plastic toy...was waiting for a video like this as looking for a rig for my car......think I will get another ftdx10 but thanks for the video guys
Skip to 4:00 to avoid the distracting background music loop - the first 4 min, and last few, were practically unwatchable for me. Otherwise it's a decent initial overview. Anyway, nice display, but I'm turned off by the gigantic add-on speaker. Not really clear about why I'd buy a 710 over a DX10 or 7300, especially given the prices appear to be pretty much identical. On paper, the DX10 looks better other than size and weight, but this thing is clearly not meant as a portable. I'm really not seeing a clear value proposition here (unless they're cancelling the DX10?), but I guess we'll have to wait for the real reviews. (Edited to temper my initially strong reaction to the background music. I still don't like it, but recognize that it's a creative choice.)
Maybe adjust the EQ on your computer speakers - the music is more than -18db down from the dialog track. The add-on speaker is just that, an add-on. If you don't want to use it, don't attach it, and don't plug it in. The FT-710 is a much newer radio than the IC-7300, which is pretty "mature" in technology terms. We will have to see what the reviewers say about the FT-710. This radio is not marketed as a portable radio. The FT-710 is a rung below the FTdx10.

I have not so much a hearing problem as a audio processing problem. Undiagnosed ADHD or whatever it may be, it seems my brain tries real hard to make complete sense of *every* audio input and winds up failing at most of it. It's bad enough I grew up thinking I was anti-social because parties and any crowded (or plain loud) situation gave me great anxiety. Turns out its part of my brain going nuts trying to follow every conversation and sound queue. Music under voice does that too, but it doesn't have to - if the music is down to a completely, non-compete, low level it's fine and fills the empty space like it's supposed to.
@@Randrew Thats a good point. Music helps carry the video forward, which is why it's used everywhere in TV, video and movies. Especially in cases like this one, where I literally had 3 hours to get there, set up the radio, shoot the video and get home so that I could start editing and upload it to our social media platforms that day, the video clips were a bt "disjointed". The music, even at its very low volume compared to the dialog track, helps make the video clips flow. I probably could have found a better music track which wasn't so repetitive, but when time-remapping a piece of music to fit the video, sometimes you end up with even more repetitive music. ...And, I just didn't have the time.
I dont see Yaesu's marketing here. The FT710 is so close to the FTDX10, 710 a little smaller. I do like the side speaker mount and the speaker is being supplied with the rig unlike the FTDX10, it is optional, a factor in total price, additional $170. The FT710 just put some of the buttons on the top. FTDX10 does have IF filter adjust knob, a most useful feature. I'd pay more for the FTDX10 just for this knob. I did not see how the IF filter was adjusted on the fT710. FTDX10 or FT710 is not replacement for FT991A, the 991A also has 2m& 440 all mode and Fusion, very different rig in many major features. All are IF DSP. I bought FTDX10 in early July, if the FT710 had been available I still would have gone for the FTDX10.
I have the impression that you lack knowledge. FTDX10 and FT-710 look similar? After all, it is normal that the products of the same company are similar in appearance, see cars of the same brand, they also look similar. Just because both radios look alike doesn't mean they are the same. There is a gap between the FTDX10 and the FT-710. These are transceivers of a completely different class: FTDX vs FT. The first is a great hybrid, one of the best receivers in the world according to Sherwood engineers, and the second radio is a standard model made as SDR. The loudspeaker for the FT-710 is not standard, you have to buy it just like for any other transceiver. None of the radios replace the other, because each is different and aims at a different recipient. Comparing the FTDX10, FT-710 or FT-991A does not make any sense because each of them is from a different shelf and for different customers.
@@Sylwester_Krolak Well I am not so impressed with your assessment. The FTDX10 and FT710 are very similar rigs, have almost identical specs. Both are SDR, but this only means their OS can be upgraded thru new firmware, mostly to fix bugs. And any upgrade is limited by what the rig can do. FTDX vs FT labeling means nothing other than Yaesu chose to call them that. This is no special labeling of the rigs, just Yaesu has stuck with the FT label. Their is a vast difference between the FTDX10 & FTDX101, the 101 is direct sampling, the 10 is not, 10 & 710 do the DSP at IF, not at the front end. The market for the FT710 is identical to the FTDX10, very little difference. And the FT991 tech is so similar to the FTDX10, main difference in the additional bands in the 991. HRO is giving the ext speaker with the FT710 for no additional charge.
@@n9eerptr To Your last point... the speaker comes standard, in the box. In my video, I didn't see it in the box as it was contained in a box that looked like packing for the transceiver.
I would really like to have been told why it is better than a previous model. And to compare it to the 991A , well don’t think either old or new are VHF/UHF. So some real wow nuts and bolts would have been nice.
That was not the purpose of this video. The video was to introduce people to the radio and show it off. There will be other videos that are an in-depth, deep dive into the radio (see the Ham radio Crash Course channel, for example). I only had access to the radio for less than 3 hours, which isn't long enough to learn about it and shoot a video of it. ;-)
*ATTENTION* !!! A DVI video output port is compatible with very common HDMI inputs by using a very simple (fully passive, no embedded chips, just pin-to-pin wires) and readily available DVI-to-HDMI cable. This sort of cable is ~$10, barely a few dollars above the cost of a more common HDMI-to-HDMI cable. So all the grumbling and faffing-about concerning the DVI interface is just a wee bit silly, given this important tidbit of info. You don't need "an obsolete PC monitor", you don't need "a monitor with a DVI input", all you need to do is purchase a DVI-to-HDMI cable and use any modern monitor or TV that has an HDMI input. I hope this helps. Google terms: DVI HDMI Cable. Cheers.
P.S. This choice was made because the HDMI standard comes with extra costs, that would have increased cost cost of the radio. Cheaper for you to fork out ~$10 for a cable.
That question has been asked and answered so many times here in the comments. Short answer: HDMI has a per unit license fee. There's no audio passed to the external monitor. DVI to HDMI adapters are very cheap.

That's straight out of the box. You have to adjust it to your liking. Just as TVs from the retailer are set to "demo mode" so they look bright and super saturated on the shelf, you would (should!) never run them like that when at home!
Yaesu needs to learn how to design a user interface. At 5:21, the top-left of the screen is showing buttons: Off, 6dB, 12dB and 18dB. Looking at the screen, what are these buttons referring to? The demonstrations suggests the user pressed the "ATT" touch screen control, but how are you sure "IPO" was not pressed? Of course, this ignores the more important question of why the ATT, IPO, DNF and AGC controls are located between the S meter and spectrum scope in the first place. Why is "DNF" a touch screen control, but "NB" gets a hard button? This is a great example of a poorly designed user interface.
HRO keeps replying about how the music is -18DB down, and blaming the critics. But really, it was awful distracting dreck. Don't get me wrong, I love HRO as a business. But if I walked into a store and that stuff was playing, I'd leave :)
I agree! 18db down? B.S.! It’s loud, annoying, distracting, and useless. What is it with RUclips creators constantly adding this noise to their videos? Do you think we’re too stupid to watch if we’re not constantly bombarded with music. At about 1/3 of the way into the video I dumped it.
@@w9fcc Yeah, I actually am on the RUclips Production learning curve (the low end at the moment), and I've seen recommendations for 25-30DB down, but I can see it being very much a matter of taste. It can be done well in some cases, but sometimes, silence is best (and easiest). I believe given the informal presentation style of this video, not to mention the target audience, the music was the wrong choice. On the other hand, I guess it's fair to say that, just because we don't care for it in this particular case, it's still a valid style choice. Just one I wish was used a little more selectively.
Sorry you had problems with a radio that was discontinued in 2014. The problems you had with a 2002 vintage radio are unlikely to transfer to this new radio.
A year later, and this radio has proven itself to be a winner, many times over. Still love that inner ring on my FTDX-10, though.

My rigs in order of preference (taking everything into account) are:
101D,
590SG (with TCXO and SDRplay),
7300,
FT-710,
DX10,
FT891.
It really comes down to what you are prioritizing. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses.

The first thing I do with every rig I have ever owned, after unboxing and looking at how nice it looks in the shack, is to read the manual from front to back! I usually download the PDF version fro the manufacturer as It is easier to see and navigate on the PC monitor. I will then print out, on 8.5" x 11" paper, the sections that I feel will be needed the most and keep it in the drawer of my desk.
I do have to say that my favorite HF rig is still my Kenwood TS-830S, complete station. It was my father's until he passed away and left it to me in '95.

Looks like a nice entry level HF or for somebody on a tight budget. I don't know why so many think this radio was intended to compete with or replace the FT-991A or the FTDX10. Yaesu needed a radio to replace the FT-450 and fill the gap between the FT-891 and the FT-991A. This radio fits the bill. I wouldn't mind owning one.
At around $1,300.00 I wouldn't consider it an entry level transceiver!
The FT-891 is more of an entry level rig than the FT-710 is.
Not everyone, in today's economy, has that kind of money to throw around! Especially the new, younger hams!
@@jfrphoto01 If price is the issue, then I'd suggest an ICOM IC-718 for about $650. You can find them used for $350 and up. Much easier to operate than the FT-891. I have a Yaesu FT-891 and like it a lot. But I wouldn't consider it an entry level radio compared to the IC-718.

@@jfrphoto01 The 891 is a very underestimated radio, I got it to work portable mostly but use it in my sitting room connected to the Chameleon MPAS 2.0 with CAP HAT on the front lawn and make contacts all over the world with it on 20m. This is my setup when I don't want to go to the shack or abandon the XYL for hours, I can listen and work digi modes without disturbing her or when she's gone to bed I can have voise QSO.
I work PSK31 and Olivia with this setup too.
With FLrig it's a lot easier to use and change bands and power etc but once used to it it's simple to use and all the heavy menu stuff is set once and forget.
I had the Xiegu G90 and the 891 is a massive improvement, audio quality and receiver performance trash the G90, the audio via headphones is just amazing to listen to.
If I was on a budget buying a first radio for the money the 891 is impossible to beat mainly for receiver performance and sound quality ( via headphones ) A tuner if needed does add to the cost but if got 2nd hand like I did the 891 is a fantastic radio and beats the pants off the 450D in performance and sound quality too, not happy with the Audio from the 450D at all, it's quite poor, the 891 vs 450D audio is night and day different also compared to my old 7300 the 891 beats that by miles in audio quality, again, via headphones, I'd have the 891 over the 7300 any day.
The AF gain knob looks pretty wobbly.
I didn't really get the feeling it was, but it does look that way in the video. I'm sure with more time in front of the radio I'd be able to compile a list of likes and don't likes.
Not just the AF gain knob. It looked like all the small knobs were mounted on spring shafts.
Makes me hope it's intentional, like a short "rubber" shaft segment designed to absorb shock. Or it could be flimsy plastic shafts. Disconcerting effect, either way. If I owned an FT-710 I'd carefully pull off one of the knobs first thing to see why they're wobbly.
I think a lot has to do with licensing and whatnot, but it would seem to me that it makes it a bit easier to experiment with some older tech we dont mind heavily modifying and seeing what we can make work on these radios. Might as well just make do with whats there, and if weve got old equipment kicking around maybe someone comes up with something cool. Just trying to find something good about it i guess, and amazon does still sell monitors with the DVI-D input, though I plan to go with the adapter to hdmi myself. I havent seen anything online yet, but I've been hoping someone would try a TFT monitor and let everyone know if it works just like the screen on the radio itself, or if we absolutely must use a mouse too. I dont care to spend the extra money just to experiment, but i did see some smaller cheap ones that might be worth trying out, though I'm guessing given the older technology probably not. Ive been trying to decide between this one ane the IC-7300, and I'm really leaning toward this one I think.

Really like the form factor of this rig. Interesting they stuck with a DVI video out, which would work for me as I've held onto a few obsolete PC monitors. Worth the purchase to replace my lost Yaesu world map!
DVI to HDMI adaptors are cheap and work great!
Or just buy a $10 DVI to HDMI cable. They're simple cables, do not contain any embedded conversion chips. Just pin to pin wiring.

No need for HDMI as there's no audio to pass to the monitor and HDMI requires a per-unit license fee. DVI to HDMI adapters are very cheap, so you can use your modern monitor with no problems.
HDMI would be a complete waste because the resolution is so low it would be worthless. You only get something like 800x600 resolution on a big screen and it doesn't look good, I don't know why they bothered. Same on the FTDX-10. A higher resolution at least 1880p would have been great.
Rather a DVI or VGA than HDMI.
HDMI are prone to make RF interference unless you have an exceptionally good cable.
Had 4 wireless mics blocked by noise on a musical, turned out it was a slightly faulty screen on the lightconsoles HDMI cable.
Had 3 channels blocked at another musical, culprit was the HDMI monitor used by the video crew.
Hi Julian, Steven Spence here (KF6TSD), former MESAC member (moved to Boise in 2006, then to Florida 2 years ago). Found this video as I was planning to upgrade my well used FT-100D to an ICOM IC-7300 but then started looking at the FT-710, mostly because of the external monitor connection feature. Not to put you on the spot but would you recommend one over the other? I am researching many reviews now on both, it appears the FT-710 may have a small advantage in the auto tuning function as well.
These companies really need to start changing the way they develop their hardware. How are they launching a new radio at the end of 2022 with a USB-B and DVI port? Even if they started developing this 5 years ago they could have included USB-C and HDMI or DisplayPort output. I have a bunch of old spare LCD monitors and none of them have DVI ports.
HDMI costs money to license, which is probably the reason Yaesu didn't go with it, not to mention that no audio is sent to the external monitor. But yeah, move with the times.

I'm an embedded systems guy, software and electronics. I've been through Yaesu and Icom service manuals and noticed that so far they have tended to use Japan designed microcontrollers (Icom seems to like Hitachi, now Renesas). Unfortunately Japan's big 3 Hitachi, Mitsubishi and NEC were kind of lagging in microcontroller innovation (part of what lead to them all rolling into Renesas, IMO). The H8-family micro that Icom has in its 7100 was kind of pitiful (again IMO) even at that radio's launch.
These days there are any number of highly integrated ARM micros ready to interface to LCD touchscreens and any manner of A-to-D and D-to-A subsystems and fully capable of doing the DSP themselves (the IC-7100 has a TI DSP co-processor). Better yet, micros like some in the STM32 family also have native USB support and some with HDMI/DisplayPort support. But most of these microcontrollers are NOT Japanese.

The only thing that I'm little disappointed is the DVI output instead of HDMI or DisplayPort with sound support. My screens has no more of the obsolete inputs.
They were probably concerned with the connector staying connected. HDMI cables fall out or get destroyed easily while DVI locks in and has the same quality signal.
My $12 PI has HDMI. In 2012 BestBuy said no more video devices without hdmi. That's how outdated that dvi connector is.

I've still not paid attention to the radio in this first review...I'm still mesmerized by the range on offer in HRO (yep, I'm in Australia.....). Looks a decent radio though from my quick glimpse.
Based on past history of the FT-897, I have a strange feeling that the display will be the first thing to start showing problems. I just hope Yaesu had the foresight to have an adequate supply of spares available.
Yaesu is not the only manufacturer to have problems with its LCD displays. Hopefully, they have all learned from their mistakes.

Keeping in mind that I _still_ do not have a license nor does my paygrade come even remotely close to that of a Technician's level of knowledge. I had plans on learning the radio strictly on the receiving end while I study for my license(s).

You are still in really good shape with the FT-991A. It has 2m & 70cm all-mode capability, which neither the FTdx10 nor the FT-710 have. The FT-710 is marketed as an entry-level radio, below the FTdx10. The FT-991A was introduced in, I think, 2016. Technology always advances.
I have the 991A and will not be getting it rid any time soon..... its just too dam useful having 2 meters and 70cm included... Not only that but it performs superbly an all the bands... A keeper for sure.. Its a shame the DX 10 didnt have the higher bands included.. oh well..

Imagine what you could do with all of the volume occupied by that external speaker.
Being a relatively compact radio, it's easy to travel with. Having the detachable speaker with a janky cable connection rather than an integrated speaker is possibly a recognition of exactly what you're saying. Traveling, and on field day or at events you'll likely be using cans anyhow, so the speaker can stay home. If you want to put external amplification and quality audio transducers cause you like great sound, you can, and ditch the side speaker also. Seems to me it's just added value and front-firing has some advantages in clarity IMHO.

Looked like low output, where is the Notch and filter settings?
It looks like the top mounted speaker in the main radio case is actually larger than the speaker in the side mounted box. Decades ago in the CB era, I had a curved plastic device that would stick on the top or bottom of a radio and direct the sound to the front. For such a simple device they worked quite well. I wonder if anyone else remember those?
I think the side speaker is probably a little better quality and the enclosure helps also. The external and internal speakers are supposed to work together.

@@BryanTorok The "using both speakers at the same time"-thing is how the AESS works. You adjust the levels of each speaker to make the audio the most pleasing for your personal preference. An interesting concept. You can, of course, adjust them so that you only hear audio from just one or the other, or unplug the external speaker. It will be good to see how the FT-710 stack up against other radios, I agree.

FT-710 is actually sold for ¥117000 in Japan, so it is $830 when converted to US dollars.
It is £1200 in the UK but already discounted by some outlets to £1100.
There's no import duty on radios made and sold in Japan. There is import duty for radios built in Japan and sold in the USA. There's also import costs to ship them here. There are also state and federal taxes, so it's not really fair to compare prices between countries.

For anyone thinking of buying it in Japan and shipping it to another country because it is cheaper, don't forget there's no warranty coverage when you do that! If it broke, you'd have to ship it back to Japan to get it fixed at your expense.

This is 2022... Wondering why on earth there would be a DVI-D as the only video output option. I'm sure you can go directly to HDMI with a regular DVI-HDMI cable, but still.
My understanding is that DVI-D doesn't require a license like the others do, thus keeping the overall cost of the product down.

I wasn't necessarily saying it should be HDMI. In fact, my thought initially was that it should be Display Port, which superseded DVI-D well over 10 years ago. It's a current standard and as far as I know, it's a royalty free VESA specification. I don't know about consumer grade, but pretty much every business grade monitor has Display Port natively these days.
@@mikeschmalz2031 Display port, HDMI, DVI, they're all the same thing. Just get an adapter to whatever your monitor takes. DVI is convenient because a lot of people have junk monitors from 10 years ago that use this standard that would be perfect to stick on a radio.

I feel that the 710 could have had a much smaller screen, more buttons and higher resolution out for waterfall would have been amazing but the FTDX-10 video output is the same. Still an amazing radio though and no doubt the 710 is too.

The burning question i have is the rf gain similar in working to the dx10 (which is just fine )? Or because it doesn't have a front end stage is it a disaster like my ic7300 or most other pure sdr rigs ? A proper rf gain is a must after experiencing ic7300 rf gain rubbish ?

IC7300 is direct sampling DSP and yes can overload the front end although I seldom have an issue with it. The FTDX10 and FT710 is not, they are IF DSP, 1990s tech with improved DSP. SDR simply means can upgrade the software. I do like my FTDX10, but IC7300 has more operational features and easier to use. The large menu in the FTDX10 is not so friendly, continuously having to go to it. But that has been Yaesu's approach for years like with the FT991. I do like the speaker mounting on the side of the FT710, is different.
@@n9eerptr thank you for your thoughts . I know my priority of having a good working RF gain control is overlooked by many hams . Some even think it is simply a 'mute ' control? Especially in very general noisy environments, however if like me you are used to the benefits of a proper working RF control, using it to lift the noise floor on top band people would start to see the benefits? Only if all they have for reference is a high general background noise and a icom ic 7300 i can understand why they think of a RF control is simply a mute control ? I still like my icom ic 7300 in every other respect , and is much more user friendly than the ftdx 10 that my friend has (he also has the ic7300) but the dx10 RF control just works ! The ic7300 is indeed a mute control. Hopefully this new ft710 will be similar to the ftdx10 in operation ? My understanding was the new ft710 is not hybrid like the dx10 ? So my concern is it might perform like my ic7300 which is very poor in lifting the noise floor (it doesn't it simply attenuates) Especially on low bands ? We will see in the coming weeks all about the pro's and con's . Tks again for your feedback.
@@robduncan599 I see the RF gain in the IC7300 as an attenuator, it does decrease the signal along with the noise as the S-meter indicates. I would suspect this is done because of the direct sampling and ADC conversion. The DSP remains in full operation. The IC7610 functions the same way. So does the RF gain in the FTDX10, it does reduce the gain of the front end with increasing the ALC voltage, just the S-meter continues to show the max level of the received signal, but the noise is greatly reduced, a most liked feature. But what I like most about the FTDX10 is the knob for adjusting the IF bandwidth and adjusting the band pass. Having quick control of these offers some advantage in adjusting for better reception. Question for you, what do you mean by hybrid??? In the old days it meant part of the radio was solid state with some tubes, usually in the final. Of course not what it refers to today.
Thanks for the video! I was one of the many that brought the unit before the Mars mod was offered. Can you share a tip on how we can mod the unit ourselves? Obviously we would be those people that are fully aware of the warranty breach and are fully intimate with a soldering iron. Any chance it's identical to the 991a?

I don't think you could skip the manual on a transceiver like this, no matter your experience level. So many embedded menus, for starts.

Having the FTDX10 for about 2 months I have not opened the manual much. If one is familiar with typical rig terminology it is rather easy to work with the FTDX10. There are some issues to learn, setting up each band and mode the menu settings go with each band setup. Drove me nuts when going to a band in CW, but the BK-IN keying was off. And after selecting menu with FUNC it sets the knob for that function, set to CW SPEED then the knob stays with it. Just some small things that are different from other rigs. The calling of memories is easy, but did take some learning on how to use them.

Curious if it had a peak reading meter and when you were transmitting it operated like a CB meter the needle was just bouncing I was curious if you can make it peak reading and smooth while it's receiving anyway it's a nice looking radio I like the blue but I'm sure you can set it up the way customize it the way you want thank you for sharing it really enjoyed it and happy holidays

Does that external speaker come with the radio? Did I hear him correctly?
It's part of the AESS system, so yes, it comes withe the radio. Or you can buy the FT-710 Field version, which does not come with the external speaker (and therefore does not have AESS until you add the external speaker). You can always follow the link in the description and see exactly what you get.
From the description on the video, it appears that Yaesu has dropped supplying the headphone adaptor and spare fuse, if they are penny-pinching on those items I wonder what internal components they are also penny-pinching on? This concerns me as I live in Asia for 6 months of the year and will buy it when back in the UK in Jan next year, I don't want a radio with inferior components that could fail and be unable to get repaired until the warranty has expired.
There was no headphone adapter (maybe there is not much call for it anymore?) in the box, but there is a spare fuse. It would make zero sense for Yaesu to use inferior components that break during the warranty period where Yaesu would have to pay for shipping and the cost of repair.

all manufactures know about when parts will fail. that is why they have short, or otherwise unusable warranty's. as they do extreme testing on everything. just to find the avg fail point.
the 710 does not have some of the features that the ftdx10 has...its a lite version of the ftdx10...just picked up my 2nd ftdx10 and i love having two of them!!!
Correct. It is a step below the FTdx10. It is not meant to compete with the FTdx10, but to complement the line-up.
is that high qrm across the 40m band from strong signals or is that qrm from a switchmode powersupply or another device in the house ? i wonder how the yaesu ftdx10 would handle that same qrm in 40m, because if that qrm is away in the ftdx10, that means its qrm from strong nearby signals, which the ft710 can not blot out because it doesnt has a roofing filter. i want to hear a side by side comparison of the receiver in SSB voice with the Icom IC-7300.
That's QRM from every other store nearby! There's a laundromat next-but-one store away, for example, with dozens of massive electrical motors spinning away 12 hours a day. Every radio suffers from the same QRM.
Look on the results of the receiver comparison by Sherwood engineers. Two Yaesu transceivers in the top three in the world (the FTDX10 is the third receiver in the world). By comparison, the IC-7300 isn't even on the front page. I am sure that the FT-710 will have a much better receiver than the IC-7300, although it is only SDR. So there is not much to compare, except subjective feelings, but they do not matter much.
@@Sylwester_Krolak the 7300 has an industry quality a/d converter, but the ftdx10 (ftdx101d/mp same) has only a low quality cheap commercial a/d converter, accordingly the 7300 sounds better (clearer and more detailed). the sherwood website does not show a measure for that at all but other measured values of receivers, accordingly that sherwood page is not telling the whole truth about how good these recivers really are. you and alot of other people are (apparently) not aware of that. the ftdx10 is much more immune against inband strong signals, i admit, but the ft710 on other hand has no roofing filter and no preselector either, so that advnatage of higher immunity against strong inband signals will (very likely) not be excistent in the ft710, at least the 7300 then sounds better for its higher industry quality a/d converter as i write in the beginning of this comment. i would then rather have the better sounding 7300. i want to hear side by side comparisons on weak ssb voice signals in bother receivers, the 7300 and the ft710, together with strong signals on the side too, that will then tell which one is better in what regard.
@@Sylwester_Krolak I judge a radio by the receiver performance and audio quality, the 891 is right up there and the FTDX-10, Yaesu have nailed it when it comes to audio quality. I had the 7300 and the audio quality used to wreck my head, I had to have NR on all the time and it effected the sound quality, I live in the country with little to no qrm and the 891 beats it by miles both on receiver performance and sound quality via headphones, I always listen via headphones, you can capture weak signals in a way not possible with speakers, to my ears anyway.
Now I have the FTDX-10 and it's an amazing transceiver, not perfect, yaesu could have done better in some ways such as allowing live typing with keyboard for RTTY and PSK31 rather than use macro style messages.
Allow the mouse more control, have high resolution video for large screen, the video out looks horrible on large screen with 800x600 resolution, this is dumb.
But the FTDX-10 is an amazing transceiver so no doubt the 710 will be too.
As a FT-450D replacement I would not consider the 710 that because it's too expensive, the 891 is a fantastic entry level radio and it beats the pants off the 450D on receiver performance and sound quality.

The FT-710 and the FTdx10 are different radios. If it comes down to the choice of the FT-710 or the FTdx10, you should probably go with the FTdx10. The FT-710 is a step below the FTdx10. Also, this wasn't a review, just an introduction to the new radio. 🙂
If you want a dx10 buy it now. The price will go up when the 710 releases.

I am a Yaesu guy. BUT, not much to look at. Is it menu driven? I realy like my FTdx3000. Switch antennas, split antennas. Quick access to the knobs. Nice map though.
I like physical dials, switches and knobs too... even though they are more likely to fail.

I own both . The 710 makes for a much better portable rig because it only draws 1.6A instead of 2.6A on RX. It also weighs 1.5KG (5 pounds) less, and is easier to operate in the field because the front-panel is less cluttered with large rubber buttons. The ATU tunes much wider too, the DX10 refuses to tune wider than 3:1, and the 710 can match 5:1 - again useful in the field when running temporary antenna installations.

It does not. The fan is at the back of the radio and the opposite side is still open.

Skip to 4:00 to avoid the distracting background music loop - the first 4 min, and last few, were practically unwatchable for me. Otherwise it's a decent initial overview.
Anyway, nice display, but I'm turned off by the gigantic add-on speaker. Not really clear about why I'd buy a 710 over a DX10 or 7300, especially given the prices appear to be pretty much identical. On paper, the DX10 looks better other than size and weight, but this thing is clearly not meant as a portable. I'm really not seeing a clear value proposition here (unless they're cancelling the DX10?), but I guess we'll have to wait for the real reviews.
(Edited to temper my initially strong reaction to the background music. I still don't like it, but recognize that it's a creative choice.)
Maybe adjust the EQ on your computer speakers - the music is more than -18db down from the dialog track. The add-on speaker is just that, an add-on. If you don't want to use it, don't attach it, and don't plug it in. The FT-710 is a much newer radio than the IC-7300, which is pretty "mature" in technology terms. We will have to see what the reviewers say about the FT-710. This radio is not marketed as a portable radio. The FT-710 is a rung below the FTdx10.

I must agree with Chris A. I run into this frequently, even with professionally produced video. I have not so much a hearing problem as a audio processing problem. Undiagnosed ADHD or whatever it may be, it seems my brain tries real hard to make complete sense of *every* audio input and winds up failing at most of it.
It's bad enough I grew up thinking I was anti-social because parties and any crowded (or plain loud) situation gave me great anxiety. Turns out its part of my brain going nuts trying to follow every conversation and sound queue. Music under voice does that too, but it doesn't have to - if the music is down to a completely, non-compete, low level it's fine and fills the empty space like it's supposed to.
@@Randrew Thats a good point. Music helps carry the video forward, which is why it's used everywhere in TV, video and movies. Especially in cases like this one, where I literally had 3 hours to get there, set up the radio, shoot the video and get home so that I could start editing and upload it to our social media platforms that day, the video clips were a bt "disjointed". The music, even at its very low volume compared to the dialog track, helps make the video clips flow. I probably could have found a better music track which wasn't so repetitive, but when time-remapping a piece of music to fit the video, sometimes you end up with even more repetitive music. ...And, I just didn't have the time.
I dont see Yaesu's marketing here. The FT710 is so close to the FTDX10, 710 a little smaller. I do like the side speaker mount and the speaker is being supplied with the rig unlike the FTDX10, it is optional, a factor in total price, additional $170. The FT710 just put some of the buttons on the top. FTDX10 does have IF filter adjust knob, a most useful feature. I'd pay more for the FTDX10 just for this knob. I did not see how the IF filter was adjusted on the fT710. FTDX10 or FT710 is not replacement for FT991A, the 991A also has 2m& 440 all mode and Fusion, very different rig in many major features. All are IF DSP. I bought FTDX10 in early July, if the FT710 had been available I still would have gone for the FTDX10.

FTDX10 and FT-710 look similar? After all, it is normal that the products of the same company are similar in appearance, see cars of the same brand, they also look similar.
Just because both radios look alike doesn't mean they are the same. There is a gap between the FTDX10 and the FT-710. These are transceivers of a completely different class: FTDX vs FT. The first is a great hybrid, one of the best receivers in the world according to Sherwood engineers, and the second radio is a standard model made as SDR.
The loudspeaker for the FT-710 is not standard, you have to buy it just like for any other transceiver.
None of the radios replace the other, because each is different and aims at a different recipient. Comparing the FTDX10, FT-710 or FT-991A does not make any sense because each of them is from a different shelf and for different customers.
@@Sylwester_Krolak Well I am not so impressed with your assessment. The FTDX10 and FT710 are very similar rigs, have almost identical specs. Both are SDR, but this only means their OS can be upgraded thru new firmware, mostly to fix bugs. And any upgrade is limited by what the rig can do. FTDX vs FT labeling means nothing other than Yaesu chose to call them that. This is no special labeling of the rigs, just Yaesu has stuck with the FT label. Their is a vast difference between the FTDX10 & FTDX101, the 101 is direct sampling, the 10 is not, 10 & 710 do the DSP at IF, not at the front end. The market for the FT710 is identical to the FTDX10, very little difference. And the FT991 tech is so similar to the FTDX10, main difference in the additional bands in the 991. HRO is giving the ext speaker with the FT710 for no additional charge.

I would really like to have been told why it is better than a previous model. And to compare it to the 991A , well don’t think either old or new are VHF/UHF. So some real wow nuts and bolts would have been nice.
That was not the purpose of this video. The video was to introduce people to the radio and show it off. There will be other videos that are an in-depth, deep dive into the radio (see the Ham radio Crash Course channel, for example). I only had access to the radio for less than 3 hours, which isn't long enough to learn about it and shoot a video of it. ;-)

*ATTENTION* !!! A DVI video output port is compatible with very common HDMI inputs by using a very simple (fully passive, no embedded chips, just pin-to-pin wires) and readily available DVI-to-HDMI cable. This sort of cable is ~$10, barely a few dollars above the cost of a more common HDMI-to-HDMI cable. So all the grumbling and faffing-about concerning the DVI interface is just a wee bit silly, given this important tidbit of info. You don't need "an obsolete PC monitor", you don't need "a monitor with a DVI input", all you need to do is purchase a DVI-to-HDMI cable and use any modern monitor or TV that has an HDMI input. I hope this helps. Google terms: DVI HDMI Cable. Cheers.
P.S. This choice was made because the HDMI standard comes with extra costs, that would have increased cost cost of the radio. Cheaper for you to fork out ~$10 for a cable.

That question has been asked and answered so many times here in the comments. Short answer: HDMI has a per unit license fee. There's no audio passed to the external monitor. DVI to HDMI adapters are very cheap.

c. Have had wireless monitor pairing in iOS/windows/android PC/tablet/phone in 1 form or another for at least for 5-6 years now with bluetooth pairing you could even pair ya hearing aid to a ipad, phone, within the last few update to the sony x 1 tv directly..
I was merely asking why i we still stuck to a dvi/dvi-d connection when either 2 d-subs could be functionally use or 2 hdmi/mini hdmi could be used
with the light of some radios coming with 4g-lte-a or even 5g could be functional call medium

with huds becoming a commercial reality within motor vehicles I'm looking at braille and deaf communities need either access to reserve comms with text messaging across amateur/commercial/cb comms of pending visual status of the general area they live in..

The bandscope doesn't look that good. Even the 756 Pro3 had a nicer, fuller looking bandscope signal!
That's straight out of the box. You have to adjust it to your liking. Just as TVs from the retailer are set to "demo mode" so they look bright and super saturated on the shelf, you would (should!) never run them like that when at home!

Yaesu needs to learn how to design a user interface. At 5:21, the top-left of the screen is showing buttons: Off, 6dB, 12dB and 18dB. Looking at the screen, what are these buttons referring to? The demonstrations suggests the user pressed the "ATT" touch screen control, but how are you sure "IPO" was not pressed? Of course, this ignores the more important question of why the ATT, IPO, DNF and AGC controls are located between the S meter and spectrum scope in the first place. Why is "DNF" a touch screen control, but "NB" gets a hard button? This is a great example of a poorly designed user interface.

HRO keeps replying about how the music is -18DB down, and blaming the critics. But really, it was awful distracting dreck. Don't get me wrong, I love HRO as a business. But if I walked into a store and that stuff was playing, I'd leave :)
I agree! 18db down? B.S.! It’s loud, annoying, distracting, and useless. What is it with RUclips creators constantly adding this noise to their videos? Do you think we’re too stupid to watch if we’re not constantly bombarded with music. At about 1/3 of the way into the video I dumped it.
@@w9fcc Yeah, I actually am on the RUclips Production learning curve (the low end at the moment), and I've seen recommendations for 25-30DB down, but I can see it being very much a matter of taste. It can be done well in some cases, but sometimes, silence is best (and easiest). I believe given the informal presentation style of this video, not to mention the target audience, the music was the wrong choice.
On the other hand, I guess it's fair to say that, just because we don't care for it in this particular case, it's still a valid style choice. Just one I wish was used a little more selectively.

Sorry you had problems with a radio that was discontinued in 2014. The problems you had with a 2002 vintage radio are unlikely to transfer to this new radio.
