- 2011 BMW X5 xdrive 35d M57N2 engine, original owner since purchased brand new. Strictly maintained thru the years. First 'brake in' oil change at 3k miles, then every 7-8k miles. Right at 130k miles, lower timing chain brakes without any previous symptoms. The same engine can be found in E90 335d and e60 535d.
The interesting part of that car is, that it is US version and it has one of the latest M57 engines installed from BMW. So it has AdBlue, more complex EGR system, electrically control Swirl Flaps, different bigger Turbo-charger from the European version M57. In the video, we going to pretty much replace all the problematic / known issue related parts, aside from the repair of the timing chain failure. We going to:
Straighten the camshafts
Completely repair the cylinder head
Install all new OEM timing chains, guides, tensioners and gears
Turbo-chargers oil supply and drain system will be serviced with new OEM parts
Checking of the big-end bearings
New 24 x hydraulic lifters + 24 x rocker arms
Servicing the ZF gearbox + differential + transfer case
and many more...

CRANK
you are something like a M57 Guru by now!
I just brought a US 2009 X5 diesel with 210k miles on it and it's running great. I don't plan on cracking the motor for away.
The chain failure happens without any symptoms, mine was running great to the last second. I guess yours have mostly highway miles but still, if you are going to keep the car, plan to do the chains
The king of M57!
Always the best !!! Hats off to you brother !!! My reference in the M57 engine 👍👍👍
Nice video guys. Thanks for sharing. Dutch regards Nico.
Always great to watch M57 hope will be more ^^
Good rescue
That's why is BMW the best one ever!
Briliant job
Hello mate! This is not the white x5 which was next to my car when you changed timing chain to mine one? 😮😮😮 keep me updated about your car…I really want to see it running! 💪💪💪💪
All the best, from UK 🇬🇧
Do you know if valve seat rings are available for a M57 engine from 2003? Searched everywhere can't seem to find a part. Thanks
Please tell me my friend. I am a huge fan. Is it necessary to replace conrod bearing and crankshaft bearings just to protect the engine from failure? Is it enough just to replace the timing chain?
Why don’t you hear of the older M57 with broken timing chains?
Hi Crank, I just wondering can you please make a video (If you will have time and the car in service) of E91 330d / 325d how to completlly replace timing chain with oil pump under the oil pan, and other things what should be done with it. But with engine in car. I want to make it myself on my E91 325d, I watch your videos how u did it on the E39 (the old type M57) and also when you take the engine out on the another car. I want to do it myself but I’m little scared I will not have enough space to take some part out if you understand me.
idk if its ok to ask but im to curious cuz i have the same car... how much did it cost all this work and stuff? if my chain will broke in future just to know what i have to spend on it :D thank you
How much was that in parts and time?
Looks like you do this for fun and not for living, I see a lot of plastic parts is it made in China?
Снощи гледах клипа и сутринта докато пътувах за работа срещнах въпросната кола в гр.София :D
Е щом е стигнала до там е похвално
@@crank3646 Стига глупости 😁😁
US have EDC17 too 👍
To me it seems if you just change the guides, you will be good to go for another 200,000km
супер видео !
by the lastic cover it looks more like a n57, successor of m57
That is what I thought as well, but the chain is front on M57 and in the back N57. Being at the front makes it an M57
Thats weird that it broke a chain because I personally had a e70 with an m57 it currently has 240k miles on it, motor unopened.
Its not
This was a case of neglected car : the sludge etc. No wonder it broke. Definitely not bmw fault, this time
Not neglected for sure, I am the owner and everything has been maintained as it supposed to be since purchased brand new. The broken chain was a big surprise to happen at this mileage, but I give it to the frequent short trips thru the years, which I believe added up extra wear and tear on the timing chain components. Great job of CRANK to bring it back to life, now the engine works much quieter and smoother than before, even compared to when it was new
@@toly78 cool, great to know.
How often you change oil & what oil was used?
@@dan8789 Original BMW or Castrol 5W-30 LL04 changed every 7-8k miles. After the repair using Motul 5W-40 Specific LL04 by mechanic's recommendation
Plot twist it had 700k km bfore
Plot untwist, I purchased it brand new on a custom order and it had 36 miles on the odometer
@@toly78 did you drive it only short distances or mosty highway did you drift it for it to fail so early or only nice driving
@@adrianp4590 lot of short trips worn the chain components prematurely I guess
