The most horrific toilet scene I ever saw was in a motorway service station on the M1. I walked into the gents and there was a row of cubicles, all closed, except for one open door near the end. As I approached it and the inside came into view, I honestly couldn't believe what I was looking at - there was shit smeared EVERYWHERE, all over the pan, the walls, the floor, even flecks on the ceiling. Most disturbingly though, there was a full set clothes discarded on the floor - socks, jeans, pants, shirt, belt still in the hoops, all on top of a pair of trainers - and that too was covered in shit, with a single neat solid log on top. What happened in that cubicle, I can't even begin to imagine.

But then they found there wasn't any toilet paper, and so in a fit of crazed rage they chose to shit some more on the discarded clothes on the floor instead of in the toilet, and for good measure scoop up that shit and smear it everywhere in revenge for the lack of paper.

It had been used for three days, just not flushed. He’s right! As someone who’s travelled across all South Asia I can say unfortunately the hygiene in India is close to non existent especially in the rural areas. Smells of shit and piss all over. Neighbouring Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are better in that aspect.
