- A Plainville man who said he is dying of cancer is spending his final weeks working to rehome his dog and best friend.
Ten years ago, David Fine said 'Babs' walked into his life, and never left.
Initially, as a puppy, she had been given up two times before a friend of his took her in and asked him to keep her in his family's garage.

My uncle passed in February and I adopted his 12-year old pup. Fortunately, the hospice unit allowed the dog to stay with my uncle in his final week, providing comfort for both of them. It also gave closure for the dog. Animals understand death...so he knew his dad wasn't come again.
I hope he finds someone wonderful who can do the same

My cousin passed away this week. We made 12 hour trip down to see him the previous week and to pick up his loyal companion and friend. I made a promise to him that I would take care of his sweet Maggie if anything ever happened to him. I know it brought him comfort knowing that his Maggie was going to be with family who would love her like he did.

Exactly what I just commented! This is so important, so that they can be together as much as possible until the very end and also so that she understands whats happening and that he didnt leave her! I really hope a kind local person steps in to take care of her ❤

My husband randomly met an older gentleman while both were out walking their dogs.
He came home talking about the gentleman who was going to have a complicated hip replacement surgery the next week and I said, so who’s going to walk his dog?
So hubby went back out to track him down and the guy had no real plan. He hasn’t lived here long so didn’t know many people. His neighbor occasionally helped him out but had dogs jobs,and kids of their own. His daughter didn’t want to because she said his dog didn’t like cats and she has her own dog.
So….
We ended up with his dog for almost a month, driving almost two hours for visits and taking all our pups and his to his yard most days to play in its yard.
That was last summer and we still occasionally get the dog when he’s in hospital and frequently walk together with him during his recovery.
He’s been planning to move states away near his family and we’ve made absolutely sure he understands that the dog will always have a home with us if ever needed.
I’m hoping he lives a long life to outlive his pup but I’m prepared to make sure his dog has the easiest transition through its grief if needed.
Not many care so much about their neighbors these days__you are AWESOME neighbors!

Yeah. i think if a last resort if nothing else. Asher House would be a huge change for Babs....would be preferable for someone to be able to visit her while her dad's still alive, and when he's in hospice to be able to take her in to see him and see him when he has passed..............so in this case, Asher House only if there is nothing else.

Lynn, unfortunately that's not how stage 4 cancer works. There is no 5th stage. He probably has one of the least curable types.

God doesn't run the manufacturing plants that poison our water, our soil, and our air.

What a lovely and kind man. He is an example what ALL OF US who have animal companions MUST do….make arrangements for their care in the event something expected or unexpected happens to us. We don’t know when our day will come…let’s follow this wonderful man’s lead and plan for their care. God Bless Him ♥♥♥♥

Heartbreaking. I’m 73 & in good health but I also worry about my dogs if something suddenly happens to me. They are 11 & 13 now so I hope they pass before me. I couldn’t bear thinking they would have to go to another home after being with just me all these years. Good bless you both. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Oh my word --- I wanted to burst out in tears. I live in South Africa with rescues and that is my biggest worry. What would happen to my animals when I cross the rainbow bridge ?? That is why they are in my will and they have to go to a no-kill shelter of my choice until they could find a home.
My wish for this man is that a wonderful caring person will step in and give this old dog a solid good home until he joins his first master behind the rainbow bridge.

Thats a lovely thought, so kind of you, but I do think she should be adopted by someone who lives close-by so that Babs can visit her dad at the hospital until the very end. So they can be together as much as possible until the end and also so she understands whats happening, that her dad didnt leave her. This is all so heartbreaking, just hope he finds the perfect person to take care of her ❤

My aunt just passed last week.from lung cancer. She was on hospice since January. In her last month though, she wasn't walking or talking much like he seems able to. Her cat will be taken care of.
What a beautiful soul and if everyone treated their pets like this, like family, there would hardly be a need for animal shelters.

I'm 71 and my cat (Mozart) is 15. I know the time will come when one of us departs first. I just hope it is he, because if I go first, there is NO ONE that will be able to take care of him as I have. I found him in a ditch, barely alive with a cloud of mosquitos above him. I promised him I will give him the best care a cat could have.

the saddest thing is that Dogs don't give up their owners it's unconditional love... I want my dogs to see my dead body when it come to my time... let them know that l am not moving again and let them be in peace.. let them know what happened to my body.... they will understand a little better

Great. All pet owners need to have provisions in their will for their pets if they pass on before the pet. Many animals are dropped at kill shelters or abandoned in the streets after an owner passes.

We took in an older pit whose owner was dying of cancer. He asked us to take her before he passed. We kept her until we found a safe home for her with a nice big yard. Great dog

Recently lost a brother-in-law who never married. He retired and traveled with his pup, camping and fishing all over in a trailer. So sad. The groomer loved the dog and she took it. But so sad to leave an animal behind. I worry about this too. I hope the right family will step up for this man.
