And King Diamons is a cool singer imho.
React to Candlemass - Darkness in Paradise.
    Please!

You are fucking crazy giving this a 4 and a 6, seriously. This came out in 1983, when Heavy metal was just starting to evolve... Theatrical acting from the voice of uncle King Diamond, edgy, melodic and atmospherical riffs (It seemed like a moment that I was listening to a Black Metal band.. The influences are PRETTY strong for the extreme metal of the nineties right there 2:09, 3:10, 3:52, 5:06 ), lots of tempo changes with an outstanding rhytmic section having in count the year it was released.
Most of the time I don´t care about lyrics. I´m listening to music, not reading a book (well, in the case of King Diamond, most of the time he develops entire histories, being conceptual albums). I´m judging the musicianship, not the artist beliefs. Anyway, they aren´t satanic. It´s just a theme that fits their musical approach very well, I should say.
I can´t believe it, really. Where is your musical taste? You dig Iron Maiden and you don´t dig this one? 19 years old I have. I never couldn´t experience the musical movement yet I could join this new world because of the amazing tool of information internet is, and what a journey. Expecting to be in love with all this stuff the rest of my entire life. How metal is misunderstood these days...
I don´t write this because I felt my likes atacked by no means, but I consider that in order to judge objectively a piece of art, the cultural context that surrounds it must be known before making any preconceived statements.
    "Keep the metal faith alive!"

Sori is not wrong about the feeling of the song, MF and King Diamond use horror themed lyrics, and it's usually pretty campy. Back in the day, I'm sure this stuff scared the fuck outta people, as did most metal.

Agreed. If you can't handle a little "camp", metal is the wrong genre for you: the goofiness in spite of the deadpan seriousness of acts like King Diamond, Venom, Manowar, Running Wild, and so on, is part of the genre's charm.

Quotes from famous musician and High ranking Church of Satan member and very close friend to Anton LaVey - King Diamond "Satanism is about the Powers of the Unknown. I have had hundreds of strange supernatural experiences with the occult, the other side, the beyond, whatever you want to call it that proves there is a spiritual world that can cross over into our world. Satanism is a life philosophy so within it you can have your own religion, any religion you want. Or take from various religions or your own whatever makes you happy. I have my own beliefs and Religiously Satan on a spiritual level stands for the Powers of Darkness, the Powers of the Unknown which are always all around us at all times. This is the best way to talk about these Spirits and Powers. Not a god or a devil as both of them are christian god's and that has nothing to do with Satanism. Of course there are different types of satanism. And I never wear gold as that is not healthy for you!
Must need something bad and use that during ritual then you might be able to get help from these powers I believe are all around us. But that is only if they like you. I do not believe in the two christians beings god or the Devil, I believe in the Powers of the Unknown, Powers of Darkness, The Powers of the Occult what ever name you want to use. . I have done Satanic Rituals and have seen and heard spirits.
Some people like to call "Them" God or the Devil or whatever, but I do not believe there is all one good and one all bad power. I believe there are many, many different Spirits and Powers that exist and that they are not good or evil, like humans they have both inside of them and I always treat them with the highest amount of respect and feel that respect returned by Them. It is massive mutual respect. Not Power, but Powers, Big difference. I believe we are one and the same me and these Unknown Forces. You really have to respect them for the incredible power they have. I believe they come to those who they feel can handle it and who will be faithful believers." In the song "Welcome Princess of Hell" you hear me singing to these spirits and powers and they sing back to me. They came to me to let me know they are here for me on my journey and that they are behind me and that they wish me good luck so I see them as my protectors almost like guardian angels. We all live several lives so that our powers/souls can grow in order to reach a higher plane and join with something greater. Our powers live in a human shell several times that will enable us to go on to a new life form a higher plane of being or join one day with a larger greater force. But 99 percent of the population live by the Satanic Philosophy whether they know it or not. As Anton LaVey even told me that Satanism is simply a life philosophy and NOT a religion. Satanism is basically Humanism. Satanism is based on logic and things that are proven which is why it could never be a religion as religion is based on things that cannot be proven.
And that’s why I say that these powers of darkness are always welcome in my home. It’s as if the powers of the unknown came and said ‘Hey, we will stay with you and help you.’ That’s what I feel.”
Personally I do not use electrical lighting at home and on my Satanic Altar or in the studio when I record vocals, only black candles as electrical lighting drives away the spirits and I love having them near me. People who see Satanism from the Christian view point are not treating these powers with respect and that is very dangerous. I once actually summoned a spirit in order to prove they are real to a girl who doubted and Satan came. My wife will not look in our mirror in fear something will come out.
In Satanism you are your own God. LaVey felt and I agree that we are all individuals born with different needs and views and so he felt everyone should make up their own mind about what to believe in spiritually if anything at all which is why he left a huge void in the Satanic Bible when it came to spirituality or any kind of religious beliefs and so within the Satanic Philosophy a person can still be a Christian if that fulfills their spiritual needs. Satan also means the Opposite, Inverted, Reversed which is why we wear the Satanic crosses and pentagrams. Satan means the opposite of religion. Satanism is living out your feelings and instincts without feeling it is a sin, enjoy yourself while you are here now while you can and have your own individual beliefs. One thing I consider almost mandatory though is believing there are powers around us. And you can use these powers to help yourself or those you care about. Or throw these powers at people in a negative way. I am not religious at all but you can say I am spiritual due to my experiences and beliefs. The Satanic bible is not really a bible because a bible is for religion so it should be called a book of philosophy instead. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.
When people see the word ‘Satan’ they see only negative. Satan is not only bad, to me. It represents both sides of everything. I don’t believe in the Christian devil.
“Christianity has both God and the devil. I believe there is neither of these two. I believe in the powers of the unknown, which I have experienced many times. I know that rituals work. Satan is the power of the universe. Satan to me is the Powers of Darkness, not a man with horns. Some people think Satanism is what the Christian church portrays it to be. "Craniums high on stakes!" I can't believe you guys reviewed this song! I sometimes sing or whistle this song around the house when I'm doing chores. Thanks for the review. Yes, the lyrics are dated, but it was quite scary when we were kids in the 80's. His other band King Diamond albums used to scare me when I was in junior high especially "Them" "Conspiracy" and "The Eye". My friend Zak Nolan who was the original drummer for the band GOATWHORE gave me his walkman when we were kids in school on the school bus and said, "Listen to this." It was King Diamond's album "Them". It scared the crap out of me, but I also loved it and got hooked. King Diamond and Mercyful fate are amazing. I agree the transitions weren't as seamless or smooth. I'm a bigger fan of King Diamond (band) than Mercyful Fate. I got to see Mercyful live in New Orleans in the late 1990's. Great live show! I got to talk to and take a picture with their bassist at the time Sharlee D'angelo who is now the bassist for ARCH ENEMY. Really sweet guy. Still hoping that you will review THE FACELESS. Patreon member here. Hope you both are doing well and the kids of course! Best wishes always \m/

From Wiki: "King Diamond follows LaVeyan Satanism, which he does not see as a religion, but a philosophy by which he lived even before reading Anton LaVey's The Satanic Bible. Michael Moynihan calls him 'one of the only performers of the '80s Satanic Metal who was more than just a poseur using a devilish image for shock value'. King has expressed concern that religion has led so many people to kill and destroy each other. He stated that he cannot comprehend why religion has caused so much death and destruction when it is logically impossible to prove the presence or absence of any deity. He states that he has reached a point in his life where he has completely given up believing in anything religious."

A few more listens and this is a top 10 Fate song to me now. It's scary - and maybe slightly campy - but King executes the vocals and tells the story flawlessly. His falsettos may not be for everyone but they have such a haunting melody to them. Oh guys, didn't you like them before? This song is a great example where Metallica learned their songwriting skills and the influence goes up until Death and Black Metal of late 80s and early 90s. And the campy horror lyrics aside, King Diamond was an actual scapegoat of the satanic hysteria at the time, as he's been on TV admitting to be an actual practitioner and stuff. You sure find some snippets on RUclips, if you don't mind doing some research.

I actually appreciate you're review. I still love this. Fate is a love of not love. I've seen ever concert by Fate and Diamond since 1984 in Denver Colorado. Except 1 when he cancelled a show due to back problems. BTW, one of Metallica favorite bands. It stems from Lars I'm guessing due to the fact King and Lars are both from Denmark. King jammed with Metallica often. Sorry for the ramble guys. Peace \m/

Full album: Edge Of Eternity - Crimson. It's basically one full song (although split into 8 parts for purchase/ skipping) and meant to be listened to in one play through. Oh, and it's epic btw
Also, please can you do Entombed - Left Hand Path. Going to keep requesting until you guys give in :)

King diamond full albums, graveyard, The Puppet Master, voodoo, House of God, Abigail...etc
you won't understand everyones love for KD unless you hear the full story.

So true and to really finish a story of Abigail you need to hear Abigail II: The Revengeand too. The same goes with "Them" - its story isn't over until Conspiracy.

King is an acquired taste...some songs I think he is awesome and others the high pitch can be too much...The Bell Witch is by far my favorite Mercyful Fate song tho

A good album to start exploring King’s music is ”Puppet Master”. He uses his falsetto quite sparingly in it...

      @TheDretch 5 лет назад +1

Hell yeah. Bell Witch is also one of my all time favorite songs \m/

It takes A LOT of listens to appreciate the Fate & King Diamond, pretty much due to that falsetto.
But once you do, you realize how amazing Melissa & Don't Break The Oath are. Those duo guitar harmonies are first class. Fatal Portrait & Abigail are masterpieces as well.

Agreed - I can't think of too many Mercyful Fate songs that are bad, and "Satan's Fall" isn't one of them, but it wasn't one of the highlights of their long career either. "Curse of the Pharaohs", on the other hand, is one of the better 'Fate songs.

      I’m confused.
I get the impression that Vin was big into Metallica in the late 90s / early 2000s.
How can he possibly be ignorant of their mid to late 90s output?

King Diamond is a genius. Each album he puts out is a book and each song is a chapter of that book. Pretty unique and not many bands do that.

One of the best songs ever. This album is an art work. The oath is the other great Mercyful fate's songs. You have to reborn to understand a Song like This.

I discovered King Diamond and Merciful Fate as teenager, in the mid/late-80s. I was attending Catholic school. It was my way of rebelling and an escape from all the indoctrination. So you all can imagine the reaction and and the consequences given the times. Eighteen years of Catholic Indoc. was ENOUGH!

Michael Denner and Hank Shermann were right up there with Adrian Smith and Dave Murray of Iron Maiden and KK and Glenn of Judas Priest as well as Dave Mustaine and Kirk Hammett. You need to listen to Come To The Sabbath by Mercyful Fate and Desecration Of Souls
