Good point regarding more expensive, name-brand stuff retaining its value. I've bought a number of large-diaphragm condensers over the years with the intention of using them for a project or to test out and see if they were magic. If you stay with the big names you can almost always get about what you paid back out of them. You just have to keep a little capital (or credit line) tied up for a while. Way cheaper than renting and you're always going to be able to resell quality stuff.
