His real name is Christian Gerhartsreiter, he's a German who moved to the U.S in the 70's and over the next 30 years went through numerous aliases, eventually becoming Clark Rockerfeller. He struggles with his "w"s (which are pronounced as "v"s in German. He doesn't substitute v for w, like someone with a strong German accent, but he doesn't do a real w either). He also hits his "t"s harder than an American. We reduce the "t" to a "d" when preceded and followed by a vowel. (Unlike the Brits, we pronounce "medal" and "metal" the same.) Sometimes he reduces it, sometimes he doesn't. I'm not saying that if you met him you'd know immediately he was German, but you'd know 100% he wasn't born and raised in NYC.

I must admit, that the people who made this film for the US army exactly understood what Germany was all about. I guess that these were the German intellectuals who had left Germany before the war. And never returned. Most of the resisters were murdered and the brave died during the war. So guess who was left in 1945.
