    Pauly earned his pay check today!
    Ed to add. We don't have stocks in the country I live in. Drafts are trained to pick up their feet, just as any other breed of horse. Back in the 1930's my grandmother was farming on her own and the old draft mare leaned when she shod her, so my grandmother swung a block and tackle from a tree, tied the mare under it and hauled up each leg as required to shoe her. The system worked for many years until the mare retired and my grandmother bought a tractor.

      It's not job for wimps, that's for sure! THey have so many horses running through, there's not time to work with each one on foot lifting and prepare them better for the farrier like you would normally. It can't be easy to find a farrier willing to do all this.

    • @PonyTalesRefuge

    Just for the record, I LOVE Pauly for saying that. Yes, it's sad. Yes, that's a sweet baby that I wish could be saved. But his fetlocks are so bad now that I don't even want to imagine what they'd be like if he were the proper size and weight for his age, let alone once he reaches his full adult growth and weight. Pauly's advice is the only responsible course of action to take.

    That poor two yr old draft. Due to his size, wieght, & condition I think lack of a good diet in his first two years of life has contributed to his pasterns breaking down. He could have also been used for pulling heavy weight way to soon. Some people think just because they are big horses the can handle pulling at a young age. He still a baby. They broke him down! Last act of kindness is the best you can do. Its sad when they are so young. 😢❤ He will run free in greener pastures. ❤❤❤

    When Socrates raked the back of her leg I curled myself up. I had that done by a Trakehner, I can't even imagine how bad that hurt. She's one tough lady. And Pauly, I agree with the pulley idea, I hate to see you get hurt so much and your back can't take that for long, trust me. One of my best friends is a long time farrier and he's about your size. He had to quit doing drafts and has cut down to just longtime customers. I told him about you and he said "Hats of to that young man. He's braver than I was ". There are to few good farriers and you are a good one for sure. I'm glad you took that mare home. Your home is the perfect place for her. You and your wife are amazing.

      @@Jennifer- The staff were not laughing at the horse. These people are professionals. Working in an environment where there's sometimes sadness, you learn to laugh at things in order to stay sane. It's a defense mechanism. And why so critical? These people are extremely knowledgeable and go above and beyond to help these horses. Are you a trained farrier? Or veterinarian? I don't recall either of them asking for treatment advice.

    • @PonyTalesRefuge
      @PonyTalesRefuge  10 месяцев назад

      Not all horses are able to be desensitized prior to getting their feet done, as their feet need immediate attention. If you are referring to Martha in this video, she is about 20 years old and previously a pulling horse with the Amish. With that being said, there is a 0.01% chance she has never been in a stock before so this just happens to be bad behavior and not wanting to. To the first comment, not all drafts are gentle and quiet. To the other comment, agreed. We don't laugh because we think it's "funny" we laugh because well, in Martha's case, we know she is just being a butthead so it's more of a "are you done yet" kind of laugh. We never laugh at the struggles of the horses but we have seen a lot and been through a lot of struggles so yes, you do tend to deal with it differently... hope this helps.

    As he matures even more, I'd be afraid of him breaking a leg or both should he get spooked and try to run. Having had many a broken bone, all three ankle bones on one side, I would not wish that kind of pain and painful recovery on anyone, animal or human!!!

    I found your channel not so long ago, so I've gone right back to 2 years ago and watched from that point and I'm now up to this point which is from 7 months ago! So I've nearly caught up 😅 I have commented on a couple of the videos then thought oh jeez this isn't even reason, so they must think I'm mad! So I'm sorry about that 😂 but I must say pauly has the patience of a sanit with some of theses horses, it's so sad to watch as some of them look petrified and think he's killing them! Which shows that where ever they have been before they have come to your shelter, they have obviously had a lot of bad experiences with a farrier and I bet alot of them have been wacked with a rasp for not standing or doing what they want in a hurry to get the job done! It's such a shame but pauly trys to make it the best experience he can for them without having to drug them all up as that's not the best for a long team solution is it? Plus I bet that would be very costly for you shelter having to do that every time they need there feet trimmed! But I suppose the more he does there hoofs the more it will come second nature and with that hopefully they come to understand what you want from them! It would be a hole lot better if they could talk! Lol but that isn't the case so you have to work with what you have! I cried over that poor 2 year old black percheron! That is the saddest thing I've seen for a long while, could I ask what did your vets say had caused this? Would it be that he's been worked to hard to young then when he's broke down they have discarded him like garbage and to become someone else problem? Could I please ask if you had him put to sleep and ended his suffering?

    • @labyfan1313
      @labyfan1313 15 дней назад

      I think what they were saying they thought caused it was that he was born that way due to poor backyard breeding (being inbred). I know on Horse Plus the vets have said DSLD in baby horses would be caused by this.

    That poor 2 yr old draft..his front foot was at a complete 90 ° angle when Pauly lifted his left foot to look..that is disgusting..the fact that he was bought at auction like that shouldn't be allowing sales of disabled horses.. l just don't understand why they don't do something about that..l know Tawnee and Jason are trying to get this done by their visits to DC to try and get this sort of thing stopped..but lawmaking is a slow process..l think its great that Pauly adopted Nicki Minaj..he'll be able to get her feet sorted more easily..and she's a sweetheart and of course he has a bogof as we say over here 🇬🇧..which is Buy one..get one free
    😂 gosh those drafts were a nightmare..but as Pauly said they clearly had never been seen by a farrier to have to go in a stall..thats going to be a big learning curve for those two.. because they've got to be able to accept farrier work..now we know why they were sent to auction..absolutely no work done on them..god l thought Martha was going to get out of the stalls a few times..Nate will need to check their still bolted in..poor Pauly has a bad owee..tbh l thought he'd broken his thumb..that was right on the knuckle too..thats going to turn pretty colours..😮..great video..really loving the daily updates..great that the vet went and checked on the buteless painkiller for Nicki Minaj..🇬🇧💕✝️🙏👏👍👏👍🐴🐎🐴🐎🌈💔🇺🇸

    I make sure my laminitic prone horse has her liver detoxed everyday! There are so many treatments to prevent laminitis these days, no excuse! Tumeric is the best as it's natural! Lamiprev is excellent too!

    I wonder if they make any of those hydraulic Contraptions like the guy on the hoof GP uses for cattle tell hydraulic they walk in and they get captured in this thing and the Hydraulics lift them and lifts their legs as you want them to it's amazing

      it would need to be huge for those drafts. Agree, a crush might work, but then these nervous horses would probably still be tough. and making one for horses (much taller). might not be viable.

      Well some of those bulls did they put a nose hydraulic crushes I'm sure are just as heavy as one of those big drafts that Paul is fighting with

    ❤I've had good luck with hosing down lamonic feet with cool water 3x daily or more. Brings down the temp in feet.
    Suprised vet never said. 😊

      Hard to do that when the temps are below freezing. Definitely something that we've done in the warmer months though!

    Try therapeutic boots. My severely laminitic pony lived almost 3 more comfortable years after he got his cushy booties.

    God I love pauly. I would love a stable tour at his house. I am super happy Nicki is landing with him and his wife. I know she will have the best care. So disappointing about the 2 year old draft. I really hope the Tetricycline (sp?) and Selenium has some effect, even though it is usually used in foals. If it doesn't, he has been failed by previous owners, because he will have no quality of life, and the kindest thing will be to let him go where all the good horses go where there is no more pain and just endless meadows to run in.... if you believe it that sort of thing.

    Been watching the videos as I just love horses and I see how much struggle Paul’s has with the big draft horses sometimes when doing their feet and the stock part with Martha gave me an idea. Would a ratchet winch system help out? Like rope the foot and ratchet it up rather than using your strength to try and lift em up?

      I would think there's got to be a better contraption out there. Something mechanical like what they use for cattle? Bulls get to be pretty heavy and they still fit in the "crush"

    • @PonyTalesRefuge
      @PonyTalesRefuge  10 месяцев назад +3

      We are hoping to try come kind of pully system to help with that, yes.

      @@tricky813 I saw a contraption recently where the animal is placed upright in a very sturdy crush and then the whole thing moves so that the animal is laying down, I think it was being used on some huge BULLS, so wonder if that would be the right stuff to have for these drafts and for any horse that won't stand for the farrier. I know, I know, it is always money and money is tight, but either stop rescuing these drafts and basically wild horses until you can get the right contraption to keep them , staff and vets and farriers safe. I know I am being harsh, but facts are facts and humans are more valuable than some of these animals for sure.

    Oh you know it's bad when you really have to hold yourself close like Paulie did, poor guy. If only the Amish had taught these horses manners and introduced them to a stock instead of using them until they were no longer worth using

      Amish consider their horses pieces of property the least amount of expence as possible when they don't work out for what they want them to do dump them at auction.

    I worked at pompano Beach racetrack at 18 years old, I was in charge of 10 head of 2 year olds. The farrier came and shoed a colt and I had to walk him out so he could get used to his shoes and he stepped right on my foot. 😢😢😢omg it hurt so badly. Nothing broken but was bruised really bad for a couple months. Be careful 😊

    Poor Paulie. He must get exhausted after working on the draft horses. They are huge and the way they thrash around in the stock is frightening! And dangerous! I’m amazed he hasn’t been hurt before. I hope his hand heals quickly. ❤❤❤
