We’re back with another clip from the Gibson Custom Shop tour. In this excerpt, we’re talking about dyeing and staining your Gibson Custom guitar and how your guitars get that beautiful cherry finish! We use aniline dye on your guitar in a very special, careful way!
Watch as Dinesh takes us behind the scenes at Gibson's Custom Shop for an exclusive tour of where some of the most iconic guitars in the world are made, like your beloved Les Paul Custom and more. In this clip, Dinesh shows you one of the most critical stages in the guitar-making process: applying the aniline dyes to your Gibson Custom guitar. These dyes give legendary instruments like the cherry red SG and '59 Les Paul their rich, deep tones, but they’re notoriously tricky to work with as we quickly find out.
We’re taken on a tour through the "murder room"-nicknamed for the dye's tendency to stain everything it touches-and Dustin Wainscott, Director, Made to Measure at Gibson Custom explains why we continue to use this historic process. The application of aniline dye may seem simple, but it requires precision and patience, as the dye can easily transfer to other guitars, even when dry. Because of this, each guitar is handled in small batches to maintain quality and authenticity.
As you can see here in this video, the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville is a small, boutique-like environment that leaves everyone-artists, visitors, and employees-amazed at the craftsmanship and attention to detail.
