I am an American who lives in the central U.S., and the knife/sword attacks in your country by violent predators on innocent people, make it clear that the problem ( in your country as well as ours) isn't the weapon, but the person wielding it. My father was a policeman for many years and he taught us that when someone means to do you harm, they will find a way, with or without a gun. Just so you know, UK cops kill only one or two citizens a year in the UK. The USA has only five times as many citizens but American cops shoot dead over 1000 citizens every year. Independent sources put it as high as 1200. US cops shoot so many citizens dead that the USA is the only developed nation that doesn't even give an accurate list of citizens shot dead by the government. That is the mark of a police state, not a free nation. The USA also locks up a higher percentage of its citizens than any other nation. The excuse for this police-state situation is guns. Americans accept that cops can just shoot them if they don't do exactly what they are told because they might have a gun.

I am also an American, and absolutely agree with you. Stun guns and even pepper spray may not even stop someone who's high on drugs. We've all seen body cam evidence of that. I'm not saying that police should be out there shooting people willy nilly, however, sometimes, it's what it takes to stop a violent offender. Police, every single day, around the world, put themselves in danger. Standing there helpless is absolutely insane to me. Living in America, where criminals and deranged folk are as well or better armed - with actual firearms - than law enforcement, and all law enforcement have tasers, as well as firearms, I am amazed that the London metro police aren’t universally armed with tasers. I have friends who are Jewish who live in the San Francisco Bay Area, a location like NYC, that has a very culturally diverse population and is traditionally very tolerant of differences. My friends have been frightened by a number of anti-Semitic incidents that have occurred there. These friends have two young daughters and have been concerned about them having to face anti-Semitism. Whatever one thinks of the Israeli-Palestinian War, innocent people should not have to be frightened by such hate.
Suggesting there should be a reconciliation between Harry and his family because of the health crises never seems to take into account the severity of what he did. It wasn't a simple argument it was an attempt at complete destruction by one person against a family that can't fight back - and he's shown no remorse for it. There's also no sign that he's going to stop.

That person they sent to Rwanda, was one of very few whose story had been checked, and failed, so could legally be deported, as per the normal rules in place for decades.

I live in Australia and our police are armed. I kind of wonder what the point of your police are if they don’t have a way to stop the perpetrators. I sadly refer to the knife wielding maniac in our shopping centre recently only stopped because a female officer had a weapon. As for using guns that is why our police are trained to do so with psychological backup if they need to use force.

Andrew a friend told us that her husband came off the phone and had said to his wife that was interesting. He'd just been told he had cancer over the phone. Doesn't surprise me these days and yes he was with his wife but that's disgusting that a Dr gives you that information over thephone.

Yes, arm the police as long as I can also be armed! As long as the police are individually liable for misuse of any weapon they use on someone and not automatically absolved of their wrongdoings. Just look how often the police escalate a situation and inappropriately use violence even when they are self-documenting their actions with the use of body-worn cameras.

Folks, those images of the machete attack in Hainault were terrifying and the loss of that poor young child should be enough to convince the most pacifist of people that the police in the UK need to be armed. Not just with batons or even tasers, but with serious firepower. Gone are the days when the copper would whistle and say "Ho! So what do we 'ave here?" etc. and "Sir, I am afraid you will have to accompany me to the station." Those wonderful days are long gone. Even here in Canada our police are adequately armed. They will make mistakes, yes, but the benefits from the point of view of lives saved will be enormous.
