  • The other day I got the chance to film a rare Red Fox with a black coat! Very beautiful !
Wild foxes can experience varied color phases of silver, gray, yellow, and a vibrant black. A black color phase is a rare occurrence, usually described as a “cross” pattern with black stretching across the shoulder and back over a brown or red undercoat. Foxes are usually nocturnal, but not this one :) it subsists mostly on hunting mice, voles and insects, but will also eat plants as well. She is in the right place, there is plenty of food in our valley!

My son saw two together today here in northeast USA. I am almost 65 and cannot recall knowing there was such a thing as a black fox. I have seen many, many red foxes.....and maybe gray fox only in a zoo a few times, but never this. Wow!!!

You are blessed! It is a great honor when a rare animal like the black fox allow you to see them. A medicine man gave me a black fox tail with white tip for a shield. Peaches pounced on it and claimed it. It split in half , but she still likes to wrestle with it. She is so happy playing with it that I let her keep it. David in UK had a red fox and a French bulldog for pets. Foxes make good pets and get along well with dogs and cats. Foxes are common pets in UK. Lots of fun. Hope your fox friend stays with you. Happy day

I believe that as you have not messed with mother nature there are an abundance of mice and rabbit to keep the fox healthy and your pets safe from harm. I will never for get the movie "Never Cry Wolf" where the researcher lived amongst the wolves and he peed around his perimeters and found to everyones surprise that the wolves who everyone feared and wanted to kill lived and survived almost exclusively off mice and small rodents. Can you imagine what the consequences of an ill informed wipe out of wolves would have affected the environment. The mice would have easily taken over, fields lost and nature tipped on its head. DON'T MESS WITH MOTHER NATURE. Thank you for another wonderful video.

Going back 3 years ago I was very lucky to spot a black fox and when I tolf people a few said it was a cat. In fact it makes one think but I know the difference between a fox and a cat/ A few months later their was a article in paper saying a black fox had been spotted in our area. I never got a close up and probably never see one again because they are very rare, seeing something like this is a one in a lifetime experience.

Just now saw this wonderful video! She looks like she is shedding; looks like a deep rust coat emerging from under the dark top coat. Hungry Moms will hunt in the day if they didn't find enough for kits at night, or if she has a big litter! Hopefully your ranch is big enough so she is safe from trappers; here we had a creep actually trapping on the nature preserve. I finally succeeded in exposing his trap line, and he was arrested. But, Not before drowning a young woman's dog in an illegal beaver trap. I will never understand how people can look at such a beautiful creature and think only of destroying. I had a beautiful gray fox (huge) that thought she was part of the family (she was totally wild) but would watch when I fed the other animals, and come out of the shadows to grab some food if she was hungry. I did have to 'correct' her for being on the roof of my cat-house - which is a fancy enclosure connected to my house, that I made for kittie so she can still go outside, but be safe. But the animals are very smart - she knew I was only saying "don't be up there." I did reinforce the top wire, though - the outdoor enclosure was never designed to have forty pound predators on top, and I am not sure how I would've handled a fox trapped in the kittie patio! I guess just chastise it more thoroughly, go outside and open the gate! I also had a talk with Ms. High & Mighty (the house cat) about not attacking wild animals on her enclosure!

Inherited my grandparents' 40-acre farm, about 30 acres of which is a mix of red pine becoming mixed, and a swale with small creek. I've been trying to improve by planting native species and removing invasives. There are several deep sandy dips and one has become home to foxes digging dens. I leave them strictly alone. I've never seen them, but friends of mine identified the paw prints and said the dens are typical fox dens. A neighbor was trying to trap rabbits which are a tremendous problem for them and accidentally trapped a fox kit which they released but told me it was unbelievably beautiful. I told them the foxes would work on their rabbit problem!

I love foxes, I think they are one of the best wild animals around. I once saw a Red Fox that was brilliantly orange and with a little yellow. What you have there is a Red Fox.That is a dark version of a Red Fox, so I'd agree with your identification, they tend to be big and that one you spotted looks bigger than average for most fox species. I would hazard a guess that she/he has been eating well.
I am guessing your ranch is a little to the North of me by over 1,200 miles in southern Montana. lol (I live in Las Cruces, NM). The great background terrain looks familiar as I used to drive truck and that is where I figure you're at, but I could be wrong and you are in Wyoming as south of Yellowstone. It isn't an area I'm familiar with at all.
