A few days after my 61st birthday I got myself a Honda Type R, love it!
I have a bias towards Honda, and a dislike of Audi and BMW drivers, so that was another reason I guess, plus I've owned 4 previous Honda vehicles, cars and motorcycles. Honda has never ever let me down, not once. Not like Ford, Renault or Mazda have.

    In short:
When you are a great driver the Type R is a really fast and good car.
If you’re an average driver, the only way to be quick in a car is with the S3.

  • @steveb3914
    @steveb3914 5 лет назад +8

Extremely hard choice, i came from the older type R and was focused on getting the Audi S3 however the test drive in the audi was boring, yes it was practical and yeah definitely fast but it wasnt... fun.
I test drove the FK2 type R and loved the driving position, with everything driver focused, the drive had me smiling the whole time and was an enjoyable experience. I also like hondas trim levels, all or nothing (GT or non) where as S3 there are many levels and options that make it hard to find the exact spec you want.
Still both great cars and is like comparing apple to sony 🤷🏻‍♂️

The reward in the R, that engagement is delightful, but I liked the S3. I felt a bit high in the seating, I'm not sure why, the same in the RS3 actually. S3 yes 4wd as my Golf but too many vag cars on the road now. Plus the local Audi & VW Dealers are a waste of time to deal with. Where the local Honda dealerships always willing to help as are Mazda & Toyota. If I had £25-£30k to spend would buy the Type R all day long. All German dual clutch cars are very unreliable. They and Ford have given the dual clutch technology a very bad reputation.
Audi's and all the other cars in the VW group are prone to very expensive major faults down the road. Honda are very reliable, you only take them to a garage for a service. German great engineering is a complete myth. BMW, Audi etc. dealers charge a higher hourly rate to claw back money for the manufacturers for their massive warranty repairs.Cost per unit warranty repair German Vs Japanese, for every €1 spent on a Japanese vehicle in the first year, €12 is spent on a German vehicle. Independant Data based on German (Mercedes, BMW, VW/Audi), Japanese (Honda, Toyota, Suzuki) cars upto a list price of £45,000.

It cost over six hundred pounds to fix. Also the Honda will retain its value as there are less of them on the used market.

"What would you have"? I've had both.
I had a 67 plate FK8 in Championship White then traded in for an 18 plate Ara Blue S3....in saloon form because I think it looks better than the Sportback.
Both cars are excellent with strengths and weaknesses as described. The FK8 certainly stands out from the crowd whereas the S3 is maybe a little too subtle, although everybody compliments the lovely blue colour.
The seats in the Civic are the most comfortable and supportive I have ever experienced, but the seats in the S3 while comfortable are actually quite poor for supportiveness considering the performance potential of the car.

    AUDI:
    More Premium feel
    Better interior quality
    Better SoundSystem
    WAAAY better Infotaiment-System
    Better Fuel Economy
    Better Luminosity (headlights + rear-lights)
    Better exhaust sound
    Better Glass Windows
    WAY better Camera
    WAY better ergonometric
Feels like it has more quality
And a bit better Grip due to the Quattro System
    HONDA:
FUCKING better design (audi looks the same since the last 10 years, its a pretty boring car from the outside)
    Better Engine
    Better Brake System
    Better Suspensions
    Better Gearbox
    Better Handling
    Better Driver Position
    Bigger Trunk
WAY more Swag (if you know what i mean)
    Cheaper to buy
    Cheaper to Maintain
Grippier Steering wheel (mostly when it is cold)
    More reliable
    Bigger car = More space
    Better Pedals
A quiet Beast (sometimes you cannot tell if is on or off)
At the end is like comparing a Deer with a wild horse .... Type R is just an amazing machine and is cleverer engineered, Period.

Nice job on the video and I think you hit the nail on the head when comparing the virtues of these two vehicles.
I drove a 2001 Audi S4 Avant for about 8 years. Unfortunately it was very unreliable, but it was an enjoyable car when it was running. The interior was luxurious, had an awesome stereo and it was great for days with the family. (I have to mention that Audi also took really good care of me when the car was in the shop and being worked on under warranty multiple times). The performance was easy to tap into with the AWD system, but heavy understeer made cornering an exercise in restraint and the six speed manual was...meh, with long throws and a fairly rubbery feel. I am sure the S3 wagon you reviewed here is a big improvement on that car, but likely a (modern) variation on that overall theme, with (much) better reliability.
Fast forward to 2019, and I am two weeks into my affair with the Civic Type R I just purchased and I LOVE IT. OK...I can guarantee it's not as refined as the Audi, I'm constantly worried about chiefing the front spoiler on a curb and the FWD system can barely contain the power in 1st and 2nd gear. BUT...what a kick in the pants to drive. The transmission (i.e. clutch and gearbox), brakes, engine, chassis, seats, steering, etc..are awesome, I think (contrary to some of the videos I've watched) that it sounds great, and I marvel and what a beast the the car is overall, as I blast through the gears and carve up corners. It's obviously still early in the relationship, but I don't think I've ever looked forward to driving a car as much as I do this one. In terms of practicality, I can throw my mountain bike in the trunk with the seats folded down and not think twice about it, which is a huge plus for me. Some folks may disparage the Type R's styling as juvenile, but I think the car looks great, gigantic / gaudy rear wing included.
With my kids now grown up, I can sacrifice a bit of refinement for some excitement, so the Honda is the right car for me now.

In English weather, the S3 is an incredible daily and the better car on the road. In my opinion, there are far better weekend cars than the Type R so I’m not quite sure why you would ever need one. I understand a lot of it is an unsaid ‘x factor’ if you will, however I’m personally too logically minded to ever buy one I think. Plus I’m not 100% sold on the front end, the rest looks good to me but I still see where it comes across as a little childish.

  • @michaelmassart2349

Nice review, although I can't approve comparing a FWD setup to an AWD one. I am pleased owning the Type R myself. Honda keeps things simple: there is only 1 hot hatch = the fastest one in the civic range. Done. Looks aside, I can't help thinking that if you would own an S3, you might wish to have gone for the top of the range RS3... The S3 is not 'the A3 daddy' is it? Like because of this an S3 owner would constantly try to explain / justify why he / she preferred to buy the less powerful version instead of going all out performance-wise. And yes, I am well aware that the RS3 is in a different league when it comes to engine capacity, performance and price. But still... An ST feeling whilst all you really wanted is an RS sort of thing? A diet coke with less pop? Go big or go home kinda. No offence...

It's raw; the suspension is back breaking; its noisier; the cabin soaks in heat. The gearbox is crisper and you can feel the LSD clawing away through the steering wheel. The exhaust note is burbly and incomparable with the whisper like FK8. The dasboard is analogue rather than the awful digital cluster in the FK8. I know I'm biased, FK2 all the way.
