  • Macau is one of the few places in Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta where you can try Burmese food. Run by Burmese Chinese who moved to the city decades ago, most of these family-owned restaurants are located in the neighborhood surrounding a plaza known as ‘the Three Lamps.’ Behind each restaurant there’s a touching story about a family migrating to a foreign land.
This City Bites edition is supported by the Macao Government Tourism Office.

Do you find the Three Lamps area special?

Though not quite sure why this channel is known as Goldthread, I do recognize a litany of fascinating stories as told by a team of young folks through their lenses.
Take this as an example, there may be thousands of clips on Macau in RUclips. Yet, the team stands tall among the heap by uncovering charming while much neglected facets in this tiny territory.
Thanks so much for a superb production.

There are not so many videos on youtube dedicated to introducing Macau to the world. Thank you so much for your great work! I hope you’ll be able to make some videos about Macau’s beautiful unesco heritages other than Senado square and cathedrals

Never knew about Burmese Macanese food. Quite interesting. My reaction to ofal (organ meats) is similar to yours. Looking forward to the almond cookies mystery in your next vlog. Very interesting series on Macanese foods.

I love this. I didn’t know about this diaspora when I visited Macau in 2016. I definitely have to go back and check out some of these places. Thanks for sharing this.

Descendants of one of my grand uncles are living in Macau having resettled there from Burma many decades ago but still some of them had left Macau to migrate to Canada and USA. While my late grandfather migrated to Malaysia from Kong Moon (Jiangmen), our ancestor root. 😂

In response to your question about do we have a special area where the local eat.
In San Francisco there used to be but like you mentioned most of the kids of the restaurant owners are working in a better job and not in their parents restaurant.
Although many of the top Chinese restaurants are in the suburbs because the next generation Chinese can afford not to cook now that they have a great paying job.
All the Michelin Awards are given to those new styles restaurants in the suburbs.

To old to travel anymore but I’m glad
I can reminisce my travel experience through your vlog. The food experience is priceless.
The hole in the wall restaurant with their roach running around on the wall added to tonight entertainment.
They generally are the best restaurant to eat, minus the entertainment
You just have to watch were you are sitting. 😂😊

San Francisco, California, in the USA, has a lot of neighborhoods like this. They take a wave of immigration, then some of the people earn enough to disperse and some stay behind. Often another wave of people from a different place come next and you get a complex layering of old immigrant and new immigrant culture, all mixed in with more standard US culture.

Goldthread, is it possible to add Chinese subtitles to your videos? I want to show my family these videos and we don’t speak or understand any Cantonese. Also, my family would prefer Chinese and doesn’t really understand English subtitles. Thank you :)
