No, Nathan. It's not an adventure vehicle. It's not a crossover, it's not a "utilitarian vehicle". It's an all-wheel-drive wagon so you can drive it... On the Road... year round no matter the weather. It's not an off road vehicle. It doesn't need more ground clearance.. IT'S A WAGON. Stop contributing to the uglyfication of cars. It's just fine. It's a nice, attractive, all-wheel-drive WAGON.
Come to the Pacific Northwest and see where we take our wagons. Of course they’re overwhelmingly Subaru Outback. This car could have done what VW couldn’t do: beat the Outback. It’s got more power from a more modern engine, a bit more cargo space and the right price. But that low clearance kills its potential. Even in slightly deeper snow you’ll be stuck with this car. Off road is limited to the gravel you’ll drive for 200 yards to where the trail parking lot is.
George T. And that's fine. This car is not for those people. This car is for people who are willing to trade ground clearance for better driving dynamics. Not everything needs to be off-road capable. Side note, my front wheel drive car with 5.5 in of ground clearance has never once got stuck in the snow. I live in rural Wisconsin.
Amen. Wagons are the classy alternative to an suv. It's not supposed to be a monster truck. It's supposed to be cool and subtle, just a sedan + more practicality
We have one equipped with every option…the TourX is a great car: Super practical, sleek looks with its long & low shape, even stands out from other *wagons* let alone all the CUV/SUVs, loads of rear leg room, beautiful pano sunroof, *Only* gripes: lack of storage cubbies, no paddle shifters or sport mode, can’t turn off start/stop
i came here because i saw one of these on the street yesterday for the first time. i did not know that they existed. it's a unique nice looking car. i would probably change the rims to make it more special. i wonder if this will be another one of those great cars ( like the chevy ss) that are discontinued after a couple of years because no one bought them.....
I came here for the same reason. Saw one on my way to work today. Liked it so much I had to go to Buick's site to find out what it was. They offer a 2020 model, so it hasn't died yet. I'd buy one if I was in the market. Don't think it would fit in our garage though.
Tempted on this thing, especially as it seems a great deal could be had. Any idea if the sales will hold up enough to warrant GM to continue producing it? I'm worried if I buy it, it won't exist in two years...
@@Dilleyharry that looks so much nicer/refined without that hideous plastic wheel cover - not like you got clearance to off road it... 4wd is must for me, so nice to see it standard here.
In 1992 my dad announced that he'd ordered a car from the Chevy dealer. Fine. Then he casually mentioned that it was a wagon. I flipped out...told him I would never --- NEVER-EVER -- be seen in that thing. Wagons are for soccer moms, after all. Well, it came in, and after about six months I told him that he did not have my permission to sell it to anyone but me after he was done with it. :) He sold (read "gave") it to me early. I loved that car...slept in the back countless times, went camping with it, mountain biking, hiking, etc. It held all my crap and was a mobile changing room, too. I've been sold on wagons and hatchbacks ever since. (P.S. I'm a guy.)
I really like this car but I haven’t been able to find any tow rating. Anybody know what this can tow? Station wagons of old pulled campers and boats with ease!
Great review, keep it up, but why do automobile reviewers obsess with the exhaust pipes? It is a wagon, most wagon owners are going to care less about it. (Actually for a lot of regular car buyers, same story, what I want from a car is fast and smooth acceleration without a lot of noise (better to hear the sound system than the engine laboring)).
I really enjoyed this review, but dude, there ain't nuthin' crazy about the potentially life-saving pedestrian impact hood release. That's cool as hell! Like you, I am a long-time fan of wagons (and hatchbacks). I'm completely sold on this car but want to see if/when they'll make it with GM's 9-speed transmission. The TourX has relatively little American content, so the more, the better. Keep up the good work, and Cheers from Arvada!
Definitely the most level-headed reviews out there. I would say though that you either miss the point or pretend to miss the point that 99 percent of people who buy _____ Utility Vehicles of any variety (or sport wagons) will never even once take them off road. Now, even living in suburban Detroit, I have to admit that I have only seen ONE of these actually being driven, and it had a manufacturer plate on it!! So I have no clue how their marketing is even working, if there even is any. But I do think it's the 'right car, right time, right price' etc if only they can get it into the heads (and hands) of the right driving audience.
The 1990 Pontiac 6000 AWD S/E had a 3.1 litre V6 and was available as a 3200 lb. station wagon. The similar Buick Century & Olds Cutlass Ciera wagons (just under 3000 lbs because only FWD) carried on till 1996. They had 74 cubic feet of cargo space, and I 100% filled that space for parcel deliveries. No fancy hood poppers though.
Great review. I've always liked station wagons going back to the early 1970's. Owned several then started buying 4X4 SUVs instead mostly for the towing.
Nice review! I'm looking to replace my 2015 XC70 T6 but don't like the new Volvo wagons. Options are the Jag at $72K or BMW 6 series GT (its wagon-ish) at $71K or drop down to the lower priced wagons of the Outback and now this vehicle. The Golf wagons are too small for my needs with two large dogs and luggage. I need to test drive this vehicle.
Wow! A Buick that I would actually consider owning?! That is a very good looking car, and much more reasonably priced than I was expecting. And it's a Buick?! They've apparently changed for the better in the past few years. I like it.
I love mine! I highly recommend the Trifecta tune to resolve the sometimes iffieness of the transmission shift points (especially downshifts) and to disable auto stop / start, which does not have a kill button in this car. Flash the computer with that and man, this is a really great little car for the money!
I just put down a deposit for a CPO ‘18 Preferred trim b/c station wagons = driving experience + utility, but felt uneasy getting a discontinued model. I’m feeling better about it after watching this review.
I sat in one at the Philadelphia Car Show and was massively disappointed. Now, it does look good! However I was expecting it to be the size of the Dodge Magnum (full sized interior) but when I got in I saw it was a smaller-ish mid size interior. Nothing as 6’4” I could sit in comfortably AND have people in the back seat. If they built this off the Lacrosse instead of the Regal I would be in love.
in Australia it’s Commodore, it’s strange for you say interior is not up market as Commodore cross over come in top of range. I do agree seats should be heated/cool. Great to America opinion on the cross over 👍 now that GM sold the factory I wonder how long this product will be around for?
As a 22 year old I want to lease this. But I hope they maybe bring a N/A engine option with a RS trim level soon too? Also I don’t like that plastic around the wheels. Makes if look higher than it is. We’ll see for the refresh I guess
Would love to have this car at a lower price without AWD, a naturally aspirated engine, and none of that plastic body cladding. Let me buy it as just a straight up station wagon.
Hey I like your video, I have a huge suggestion. In your review you should talk about road noise, wind noise, and how soft and comfortable the ride is. I feel that a lot of cars are just very stiff and uncomfortable to drive. I'm 23 years old and I drive a 1995 Lincoln Town Car, I refuse to give it up because I can't find a car as comfortable and smooth as that car. Even all these modern bench seats are very stiff and there's not much padding going on like you don't sink into the seat. If anybody has driven a Lincoln Town Car, please comment and tell me a car that has the comfort of 1.
remember in the 2000's where GM made the Pontiac Grand Prix GXP and Chevy Monte Carlo SS, with the transverse-mounted, front-wheel-drive LS4 V8 with over 300hp? GM should take the new LT and do to it what they did to the LS4 so they could make a ~400hp or so wagon with AWD
Joshua Harazin tire technology has come a long way, as have drivetrain technology. Turbo tuning and traction control makes the most of the power it has at lower speeds whereas the LS4 had less grippy tires and a torquey power curve that fought the traction control system rather than made the best of the grip it had But what i want is an LT that is the spiritual successor to the LS4, with the Tour-X's AWD, so it doesn't just spin the fronts
Chevy could easily phase out all it's V8s for turbo I4 and V6 engines that would be "better suited." but they just don't have the character of the V8 layout. so hush and forget about logical decisions and just let me have my wet dream of an American, V8, four-wheel-drive wagon
As a euro wagon guy I never thought I would consider a Buick but I'm legitimately interested on checking one out. To bad they don't make one with a boosted 5 cilynder.
I bought a 2018 leftover September 18. It's a fully loaded Essence in Rijo Red. I get 22 mpg in city and 35 hwy with 91 fuel. I get lots of oohs from people that think it's a MB. Too bad Buick dropped it. A great ride and highway and city car.
A very nice car. In the UK there was a version of this called the Vauxhall Sports Tourer - now, sadly, the parent company, FSA, have deleted it. The only option now is the hatchback version called the Grand Sport.
Perhaps I'm missing something but wouldn't this more directly compete with a Subaru Outback or Golf Alltrack? I like the looks of the car but agree why have the lower body cladding if it's not really light offroad capable?
Didn't know about that comparison. Thanks for pointing it out. After reading the article it reinforces my decision to keep my '14 Outback. I'm more about tried and true reliability, a good dose of ground clearance along with a quiet and cavernous interior.
The cladding is because the United States is full of idiots who want to live out some weird Bear Grylls fantasy in the Target parking lot. "Look at me, I'm outdoorsy! I once drove 2 miles on a gravel road!"
Joshua Harazin dude. You need to get a hobby. I use my Outback damn near every weekend in the spring, summer and fall for far more than that Buick is capable of. But, go ahead, enjoy your false sense of reality.
When is the TFL Car Mashup with this, the Subaru Outback and VW All-Trak coming out? Maybe cap the cost at $37,000 to make it competitive...? I'd love to see that with you, Roman and Andre. I love wagons too, but am torn with these new offerings.
mutt Mitchell - I don't know how true it is. Have you looked it up? The wagon is rather nice looking. Most articles are saying it won't come here, but I've read some saying it will, perhaps late this year as a 2019 model. So, hard to know.....
nathan adlen I totally forgot about that. I remember the episode a few years back when y'all explained that one... Thanks for the reviews you do good Sir. I love wagons and I like how you and Roman and Andre (and previously Emmy) have passion for automobiles, and on educating your viewers about them.
Lol 7 inches ground clearance. I took my Outback off-road last weekend, the only mod: Yokohama Geolandar AT tires. The TourX won’t even make it to where the gravel turned to mud.
What's with 4x8 plywood? I've been a homeowner for over a decade and never had a need for it. I built a shed once at my old place and used a truck. One time thing.
I’d say the car has more issues with finish rather than fit. The tolerances in terms of panel and trim fit are very tight. Paint finish is also very good. The choice of hard scratchy plastics and the drab grey look are negatives. And what’s wrong Or weird about integrated pedestrian protection?
i think your trunk figures are wrong, 33 cubic feet is 934 litres and the Vauxhall Insignia estate (same car different badge) is below 600 litres and the volume with seats down isn't 73.5 cubic feet (2081 litres) its about 1600 litres. if you Americans have the passat estate the boot space with seats up is 650 litres
Love the car. Great styling and price is fair. I can live with the Premium fuel only but having a can of Fix A Flat instead of a spare tire is a deal killer.
Actually thinking about buying this in the used market. So basically this buick wagon is cosplaying as a true offroad vehicle yet still somewhat utilitarian...and thats ok. Good info 👍
Whatever happened to the slogan, "Buy It, Lease It, Rent It?" This was one of those episodes. And it's been a long time since the last Nathan "trunk test".
I think that one of the most important things about station wagons is their cargo space. It's a utilitarian vehicle which many families would like to have, and enough cargo space is necessary. I personally liked this one, though I consider it's too low--if we put many things inside and reach the maximum passengers capacity, it will hit the ground.
Edgar Villanueva so is this Better than my 96 Buick Roadmaster wagon collecter series?and it doesn't set low and I have a 3rd row and I can tow up to 8,000 pounds
This is a really impressive little car. I don't expect it to hall a 4x8 sheet of plywood. If you could just get it with a manual transmission I be drooling... but your right it looks weird with that cladding..
Like it,except for the premium fuel requirement,”exploding hood feature”(I’d disable that first thing”,) and the fact that you can’t disable the auto stop/start feature.
Thanks for watching. BTW: Here's the link to the Jaguar XF S wagon video Nathan mentioned: ruclips.net/video/Iu96bgqURZc/видео.html

I want to like this comment 100 times. I have literally never seen a CUV being used in any situation requiring more than 5" of ground clearance.
I think that looks cooler than the Volvo... And that's saying a lot
We have one equipped with every option…the TourX is a great car: Super practical, sleek looks with its long & low shape, even stands out from other *wagons* let alone all the CUV/SUVs, loads of rear leg room, beautiful pano sunroof,
*Only* gripes: lack of storage cubbies, no paddle shifters or sport mode, can’t turn off start/stop
Can't turn off what? Keyfob start?
i came here because i saw one of these on the street yesterday for the first time. i did not know that they existed. it's a unique nice looking car. i would probably change the rims to make it more special.
i wonder if this will be another one of those great cars ( like the chevy ss) that are discontinued after a couple of years because no one bought them.....
I came here for the same reason. Saw one on my way to work today. Liked it so much I had to go to Buick's site to find out what it was. They offer a 2020 model, so it hasn't died yet. I'd buy one if I was in the market. Don't think it would fit in our garage though.
I really like this! I work for a GM dealership and I never knew this existed.
Station wagons coming back finally?
You forgot about at the Mercedes E class wagon
The only two things that would help it would be a manual transmission option and if they made a gs option
This is a opel right?
Klorex
Opel insignia
Yes, Opel, Vauxhall or Holden depending on which country or GM region you are in.
Yup...and a Holden in Australia.
I have this car with a Vauxhall badge here in the UK
It's Opel/Vauxhall/Holden
Tempted on this thing, especially as it seems a great deal could be had.
Any idea if the sales will hold up enough to warrant GM to continue producing it? I'm worried if I buy it, it won't exist in two years...
I wish they made a 2wd version with no body cladding that would be awesome!
They do here in Europe. It's the Vauxhall/Opel Insignia Estate www.vauxhall.co.uk/cars/insignia/sports-tourer/model-overview.html
@@Dilleyharry that looks so much nicer/refined without that hideous plastic wheel cover - not like you got clearance to off road it... 4wd is must for me, so nice to see it standard here.
Not my type of car, but moms would be idiots to not consider this car instead of a compact crossover.
Claire Kennedy what about quirky dads?
(P.S. I'm a guy.)
@@Mmmyess you see a lot of them in europe and they make more sense IMO. Wish that had better gaz mileage though - not impressed vs hybrids cuv now...
Claire consider of changing your boyfriend for better experience
I'd drive that but I can't afford it Great video
I really like this car but I haven’t been able to find any tow rating. Anybody know what this can tow? Station wagons of old pulled campers and boats with ease!
Great review, keep it up, but why do automobile reviewers obsess with the exhaust pipes? It is a wagon, most wagon owners are going to care less about it. (Actually for a lot of regular car buyers, same story, what I want from a car is fast and smooth acceleration without a lot of noise (better to hear the sound system than the engine laboring)).
Exact same fake exhausts as the Audi SUV and the new Hyundai Santa Fe. Not a single mention in those reviews. Buick takes a bashing by reviewers.
What did you end up getting?
Wow! A Buick that I would actually consider owning?! That is a very good looking car, and much more reasonably priced than I was expecting. And it's a Buick?! They've apparently changed for the better in the past few years. I like it.
LMacNeill if like that one what about my 96 Buick Roadmaster wagon collecter series?and I just redone the hole suspension all new good parts
Nice review. I too like wagons. Thank you!
Retired AF CE so is this Better than my 96 Buick Roadmaster wagon collecter series.and I just redone my hole suspension all new good parts
AI3xZJE41 YT oh I don't know.
Thank you for this because I'm strongly considering a wagon
Amen! we need more wagon. I would love to see more euro wagons like the VW Passat wagon. The hood pedestrian thing is to meet EU regulations
At 4:25 what is that music
I'm still amazed Buick makes cars.
I hear the 9 speed is standard next year. I'd be tempted to wait for that
Awesome Steelers hat for a guy living in Broncos country, Nathan.
Wonder if gm is using Saab’s awd system in this car.
SirMikeProvolone my 96 Buick Roadmaster wagon collecter series come test drive it I just redone the hole suspension
remember in the 2000's where GM made the Pontiac Grand Prix GXP and Chevy Monte Carlo SS, with the transverse-mounted, front-wheel-drive LS4 V8 with over 300hp? GM should take the new LT and do to it what they did to the LS4 so they could make a ~400hp or so wagon with AWD
Cobalt Lukather If Motor Trend's numbers are accurate, that Monte SS with the LS4 was only 0.3 seconds quicker to 60 mph than this Tour X.
Joshua Harazin tire technology has come a long way, as have drivetrain technology. Turbo tuning and traction control makes the most of the power it has at lower speeds whereas the LS4 had less grippy tires and a torquey power curve that fought the traction control system rather than made the best of the grip it had
But what i want is an LT that is the spiritual successor to the LS4, with the Tour-X's AWD, so it doesn't just spin the fronts
Or just use the 410hp LF3 turbo V6 which is already better suited for this platform.
Chevy could easily phase out all it's V8s for turbo I4 and V6 engines that would be "better suited." but they just don't have the character of the V8 layout.
so hush and forget about logical decisions and just let me have my wet dream of an American, V8, four-wheel-drive wagon
So is this Better than my 96 Buick Roadmaster wagon collecter series
As a euro wagon guy I never thought I would consider a Buick but I'm legitimately interested on checking one out. To bad they don't make one with a boosted 5 cilynder.
I had a 73 Buick Regal wagon. Looks like they added new sheet metal and called it a day.
Congratulations on your choice of the '73 Regal as one of America's premium 'intermediates' of its day.
Couldn't agree more about the interior. I would like to see the big plush Buick style seats.
I rented this car for a week and fell in love with it
So is this Better than my 96 Buick Roadmaster wagon collecter series?
if you buy in Michigan there are dealers selling these as low as $24k
Did everyone miss the Model 3 at 4:26? However I don't know that I can recommend it.
John Cain this has longer wheelbase. Golf is a compact car, this is intermediate
Didn't know about that comparison. Thanks for pointing it out. After reading the article it reinforces my decision to keep my '14 Outback. I'm more about tried and true reliability, a good dose of ground clearance along with a quiet and cavernous interior.
I do light off-roading every weekend in the summer getting to my camp. I don't think the Tour X would fair too well.
Diego Montoya - the Mazda 6 is also coming out with a new awd wagon to the US. Looks decent too.
Jeff S Whaaaaaaaat!? That's awesome. I'll hold off a little bit then. Thanks for the heads up.
mutt Mitchell - I don't know how true it is. Have you looked it up? The wagon is rather nice looking. Most articles are saying it won't come here, but I've read some saying it will, perhaps late this year as a 2019 model. So, hard to know.....
We don’t get Subarus at TFL. As for the VW, the Buick is a larger vehicle
nathan adlen I totally forgot about that. I remember the episode a few years back when y'all explained that one... Thanks for the reviews you do good Sir. I love wagons and I like how you and Roman and Andre (and previously Emmy) have passion for automobiles, and on educating your viewers about them.
Nice looking wagon, but it would look much better if they got rid of the cladding on the wheel arches.
Joseph Maschak so is this Better than my 96 Buick Roadmaster wagon collecter series
Actually thinking about buying this in the used market. So basically this buick wagon is cosplaying as a true offroad vehicle yet still somewhat utilitarian...and thats ok. Good info 👍
Glad to see wagons are making a come back.
Let's hope they are.
What wagon can take a 4X8 sheet of plywood?
PP, 1996 Buick Roadmaster.
Peter Plaunt my 96 Buick Roadmaster wagon collecter series can and it has a 3rd row
Those were the days. BTW the new Subaru Ascent weighs the same as that 96 Roadmaster but cannot hold a sheet of plywood. ;)
This wagon has easy steering, excellent handling, great acceleration, and crisp brakes!
Better value: VW Sportwagen AWD or this Buick ?
The Buick is much bigger. The base model TourX would be my choice.
Our kiwi version of this has a 3.6l caddy V6 and a few more interior additions. Underrated cars I reckon
Fantastic video
Keep up the good work
Everyone complains that it needs more power. Get it tuned. 2.0l turbos are easily tuned to 300hp 315 tq with no other mods.
Is buick related to opel because I know a opel that looks exactly like that car
does it have a history seat?
Fun fact, GM designs the cargo space in most of its cars to hold a set of golf clubs. Even my Fiero back in the day could haul golf clubs.
Whatever happened to the slogan, "Buy It, Lease It, Rent It?" This was one of those episodes. And it's been a long time since the last Nathan "trunk test".
cadsux Ha ha, sorry! We have to evolve with the times.
Hopefully Wagons will be the next big thing.
Yes.
Very reminiscent of the Dodge Magnum. That was a station wagon that was ahead of it's time.
Third row seats ?
How is this a Wogan and it doesn't have a 3rd row sets
Great review but how is the vehicle selling?
Um where's the mpg loop numbers??
That thing is badass!!!
Are there aftermarket exhaust tips?
Good vid, but where is that Jaguar link Nathan mentioned? Not in description or on video.
Here you go: ruclips.net/video/Iu96bgqURZc/видео.html
I'm 16 and would actually like this car for after High School.
Great review. I have hatchback grandsport 1.6turbo petrol/gas in UK. Been a great car.
This is a really impressive little car. I don't expect it to hall a 4x8 sheet of plywood. If you could just get it with a manual transmission I be drooling... but your right it looks weird with that cladding..
IH, Sadly, you will have to fly to Europe to get a manual.
That's too bad.. this car would be alot of fun to drive if it did have a manual.
Agreed X 10 .
Like it,except for the premium fuel requirement,”exploding hood feature”(I’d disable that first thing”,)
and the fact that you can’t disable the auto stop/start feature.
