Great film. You'll never know unless you were actually there, but from what I have read about Vietnam I think This film captures the blood, guts and sheer futility of that war very accurately, perhaps better than any other Vietnam War movie ever made. This scene was brilliant - those beautiful Huey's with the unmistakable snarl of their turbines and distinctive chopping rotor sound, the gut wrenching fear and tension on the faces of the GI's who know they are heading into the jaws of hell, all to the backdrop of that iconic Vietnam era anthem from the Animals, a song that ironically enough was banned from air play on the Armed Forces Vietnam radio network.
I remember cycling to school and in the distance hearing a Huey flying towards me, I think it was during a training with a lot of NATO troops. Anyway, this sound is overwhelming and magic. ‘ 30 years ago, but still remember. When I was in Capetown South Africa, I took the combat flight tour in one of the Hueys that served in the movie “ Apocalypse Now”. Best tging I did. I was sitting on the side with my legs hanging out and w were flying so f@cking fast and low.
Did this enough times to get an Air Medal. Would have preferred to NOT get my Purple Heart. Read the Pentagon Papers. There was never a chance of "winning" this conflict. I was there. 9th Infantry Division, 1968-69
I got a chance to fly in a Huey at Fort Irwin California, February, 1984 . I was in the 4th Aviation Battalion. It was cool . I got an Army Achievement medal for NTC training at Fort Irwin
I was there during the battle; B Battery 2 /319th Artillery; then with B company 2/506th Infantry as an RTO, calling in artillery on enemy positions. The A Shau was a Bit-h!
This was one the last major battles of the war, US, Australia and its allies started to slowly pull troops out around this time, leaving most large operations to the ARVN and CIDG troops. In fact, what this movie doesn't show is that the ARVN were the ones who actually took the hill. What did you mean by war of attrition, can you phrase the question better? The main goals of the US and allies from the beginning to the end was to win the hearts and minds of the South Vietnamese populace, and prevent the Vietcong from influencing them. To fight the NVA in traditional warfare, to deny the enemy supply routes and to prevent the Vietcong from holding any territory.
The ARVNs did not take the hill. Where are you getting that information? They were to the northwest to block the NVA retreat. If you want to read a factual book read, The Crouching Beast by Frank Boccia, a real hero. He was the Platoon Leader of B Co, 3/187 that fought its way to the top.
Creek, the United States and allies had won the war for the populated areas. Greatly. After one Heavy B52 bombing run against North Vietnam, the North asked for mercy at the Paris Peace conference. The South Vietnamese had been told for years the Americans and allies were going leave. The S was made ready. And the S held up fairly for a few years. The demon o crats in Washington refused to send the agreed-upon replacement supplies to the S in 1975. Please research it. Today these demon o crats are far worse. Deuteronomy 28 applies.
I'm ready for both of my knees to be replaced and probably my left hip also that I still blame on jumping out of those fucking helos carrying all that shit on my back.
Mark, be assured fear is real enough in any war. But the acting and overdoing it of these actors was just that- overdoing it. Ya actually get somewhat used to it. If this movie was instead real footage, those guys were all on their first time out. Fear wasn't shown to that extent, nor did fear rule anything. This is more of a commie propaganda attempt. But ya, fear existed. It's wearysome with so many reports leading people to believe Americans are frightful. Just the opposite. I'm not including the actions of the top decision makers.

Vietnam war was something correct to wage on from the perspective of contemporary geopolitical realities; President Johnson was correct, Secretary McNamara was correct. Fullstop.
The war was a complete waste of human lives and money. McNamara knew this in an early stage, it is well documented (today!). There was nothing correct about it, except for the people making money out of it, the cigar smoking directors in the board rooms of the miliary-industrial complex. That is also why El BJ lied continuously about it to the American people. Worst politics of the USA ever, although they repeated it partly in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Love this film. I am a Vietnam War reenactor and our unit focuses on this battle. Deep respect to every man who fought on that hill
How does someone get into doing that?
I liked how the Huey’s never actually touched down.. nice attention to detail… highly underrated Vietnam war film

@@starpaladinnelaj probably coz the guys in charge thought it encourage desertion or something or negatively impact morale

Nothing like the sound of a Huey!
Bubba Sizemore yep its own sound. Can hear it miles away.
Totally agree.
I used to serve in UH-1 airport.
Without that engine sound I even couldn't fall asleep.
Yes there is... the sound of lots of Hueys 😁

The sound of huey blades. The chopper pilots are above the best! Door gunner also.
Slicks! That is what my brother flew, Crew-chief/Door-gunner. He was in the Mekong Delta with the Soldiers up to their arm pits in water.

I can't watch this movie no more its too depressing, war is hell, and if you survive, you'll watch your brothers die.
Your right, it sucks to loose ur battle buddy's, excuse me, your family.
Very nice man. Cool thank you so much 👊👊👊 good remenbers.

Me too
In the movie it’s a bit bigger andantes this scene you can see a camera crew in the bottom right corner at 0:52
I could tell it's a movie right away.
God will take me to heaven in a Huey
You don't win wars with body counts, you win them with strategy. There was little strategy in Vietnam.
No because of Congress and politics they lost the war best strategy was founding top gun in Vietnam
You are 100 percent correct sir.

I dare think there is no other movie like HH about that f war so terrifying for who never fight
What makes the green grass grow, blood blood the enemies blood!
did the war pretty much become a war of attrition at this point in 69? Or was it always like that?
