Holy bejesus, 420$ for the lionsteel😳 Like others already mentioned, the TRC is about twice as expensive as the M7 here in EU. Thats the main reason I have chosen the M7 over the Apo. I've bought my M7 for less than 200€. A great knife for the money. I have a TRC speed demon Apo, and the finish is out of this world. Almost a pity to use the crap out of it. Don’t get me wrong the TRC is a beautiful, capable and meticulous looking knife. I just can’t see how this knife is almost 2.5x the price of the comparable M7. The diminishing returns is strong in the comparison.
Finally decided to buy one and I can’t find one anywhere. Not even overseas. 🤦🏻♂️ I do know where there’s a South Pole model so I think I’ll grab it. 👍🏻
BK9 chops like a 12 inch machete, without the reach. Very good for it's size. Of course you can have 5 or so OKC 12 inch machete's for the price of a BK9 here in the US.
Recently caught the EDC and camping knife bug. Found your edge retention testing a very useful reference point. I'm a chemical and materials engineer working for a steel company. We aren't tool or blade steel specialists. However, I understand steel chemistry, microstructure, testing, properties, statistics etc. Looking through your spreadsheet I had some thoughts that might be of interest. I'll try send through at some stage. No worries if not. Have fun.
4:17 The Molletta is quite a better choice IMHO, the 3D micarta handle is looking way more comfortable, the drop point blade shape is beautiful AF and the other one is kinda looking like a mall ninja dream with the radioactive logo and also the handle cannot be taking apart. PS: 10:05 Put a good lanyard on it and it's done. PS2: And me like a a good sheath.

I Customized My Becker BK9 and My BK 7 over 10 years ago and they are Still Going Strong 💪. Those Knives are Still flat out Tough to Beat , especially for the Price ....👍🖖
Sleipner is tougher then the elmax. I bought the M7. In America, the M7 is around $230, while the TRC is around $500. Big difference in $$. The only big positive the trc has over the lionsteel is that it's stainless.
You, as an obvious expert, also know that Elmax is not Elmax. It is the treatment of the steel, the blade, edge etc., 'geometry', that makes the steel what it is. But you already know that. By the way, I own both models
@@renexwing1546You don't need to be an expert to understand that most stainless steels with high edge retention are more brittle than non-stainless steels.
I find the T7 a great all rounder; I paid £214 sterling and chose uncoated satin blade. As you say the sheath is functionally superb. No knife is perfect at everything, but this is right up there with the Fallkniven A1 Pro as a general purpose knife. I also like the Fallkniven A2 which is an older model in VG10 but ergonomically nice imho. The T7 feels solid and reliable and I’d be happy to recommend it. If you primarily want a chopper the Terava Skrama 240 is a great budget option, I’ve found, and no need to mollycoddle it!!
I have a TRC Apo Knife. The knife is premium in every aspect. Elmax steel. It is Full Tang (the lyon steel is not). It is partially made by hand. Its edge is handmade. It was chosen the Knife of the Year in All Europe. So its a hole thing.
That a very steep price for that steel. This knife with its great design should have been made from 3V. Just my humble opinion. Thank you for the video.
You should give ballistol a try mate it's a decent lube, good rust preventative and it's food safe. Works well for cleaning too, it's basically a better WD-40 in my eyes.
Channelling Lynn Thompson in this one. Pete, hope you enjoyed making this one a fraction as much as I enjoyed watching ! Pretty sporty looking baton you're wielding. That extra inch always comes at a high price my friend. Used to do all my de-limbing with a modified Western W-49 before it was stolen (grip & guard cut down a lot).
Btw the m7 is available in the UK for £180 or thereabouts. The cheapest we can get the trc for is about £400 and then theres the new 'brexit' charge for goods from europe which puts another chunk on it. In all the lionsteel is less than half the price of the trc here at least. I think they are ripping ppl off in oz.
Lionsteel knives aren't expensive. In Europe, a T5 costs about the same as a Becker BK7. The M7 is about 25 Euros more than a BK7. I think Australians just get robbed even more than Europeans when it comes to buying knives.

Best handle I've found for chopping is a Hickory ax or hatchet handle although Ash or Maple are good too :) All kidding aside I am pretty old school and if I were headed into the back country my survival backpack would have a small 2 lb. Hudson Bay axe as I've used one helping a friend build a small cabin about 5-6 miles from the nearest road in Idaho. It is a great little ax that you can use two or one handed. Even so a hatchet would work better than just about any knife out there. There are exceptions of course, always are, but a 4-5 inch fixed blade, no thicker than 5/32 or 4mm with 1/8 being best for all around use. Add in a folder plus a hatchet and you're all set for wood crafting.
It's only about $230 here in the US whereas a Becker bk7 is $150 with the micarta handles and a nylon sheath. At that price it's a decent deal. $420 is a bit rough, especially for sleipner steel, even though lionsteel seems to have a really good heat treat on their sleipner.
Appreciated your form when ending the deadly rope snake early on. Form was just right for the size of snake, Not exerting the extra motion which might have been required for a larger rope snake. Your practice is working padawan. 🌝
I've heard you mentioning how much you like the Lionsteel t5 compared to most of its competitors. I was just wondering, now that you've had the chance to try others, would you still buy a t5 nowadays, or if not which fixed blade would you replace it with? Cheers Pete- keep up the content👍✌️!
I'm going with the hatchet or maybe a machete, or my BK9. What I'm seeing suggests they are just high priced toys anyway which is fine if that's what you want to do.
I did a quick search and didn't see that you've ever tried the ESEE Junglas. I may be wrong, either way, as a slightly larger than average man that occasionally has wood to cut, I like it over the BK9 and honestly a lot of way more expensive stuff. I don't at all mind a softer, tough steel on my big knives, the handle is very accommodating and comfortable during chopping for larger hands, and the sheath is great. Price isn't bad either. Maybe check it out sometime if you haven't already. It's basically a weighted machete. It sails through wood.

It's great heat treat and quality, with custom options for handles. Maybe the best deal for 3V, and comparable size to the TRC knife, only less than half the price.
I love the feel of a good steel knife, but in my experience, if you want to play survival, just get a machete and a cheap pocket knife for cooking. An axe or saw also move you up several hundreds years. You still can carry them and your hands are not in pain for cooking after getting timber
Not likely. 3v with the right heat treat can be hammered thru bolts and chain without rolling or chipping. No $60 edge does that. Plenty of $60 blades can do regular knife stuff just as well.
@J T I can do anything with my 60 dollar survival knife that someone can practically and realistically do with a 400 dollar plus knife. Things you can cut, stab, chop.
Other than increased edge retention, which is the least important attribute of a knife to me, so long as it's not ridiculously terrible, I don't see what these offer over a Bk-9, Bk-7, Esee 6, Junglas, or even a Cold Steel Drop Forged Survivalist. You're absolutely right that these are luxury goods. If I wanted a semi-stainless survival knife I would go with 3V, which would hopefully be easier to sharpen than either the Lionsteel or TRC. For luxury I'd take a Bark River Bravo 2 or 1.5 over these.
Better edge geometry, better heat treatment, way better steels, better handle materials, way better sheaths, way better knives overall. Better blade and edge Geometry along with better heat treatment alone, makes a huge difference. Esees are overpriced and overated, their blade geometries are the same as the cheapest Chinese knives I ever had (too thick behind the edge) Esees and Gerber Strongarm (for example) their only positive, is their heat treatment. Steels are very poor 1095 is also an overated steel for what it is...Handle ergos, also should be and is better, on more expensive knives. PS1 (Ka-Bar steel is not 1095. It's a steel very similar, if not the same, as the Carbon V. that Cold Steel used back in their glorius days!! PS2 You should get a Survive GSO or a TRC Mille Cuori, to be able to tell the difference, and understand what a quality knife is.
@@greekveteran2715 I love Mille Cuori. Wish I could pair it with Elmax Speed Demon. Mille Cuori has longer edge length that some clever hunting knife and it's not an overbuilt Bowie either. I love knives, watching videos, especially funny good ones from Cedric & Ada channel add alot to my knife enthusiast hobby. I been seeing value in LionSteel, MKM and knives made there. TRC Knives give me stainless or powder metallurgy premium Knives for scratching the itch of quality. Bark River Knives satisfy too, most above all Bravo Tope Recon. It's the golden age of Knives with technology and internet to spread the word. I remember the '80's you were lucky to even know there were great Knives like Pacific Cutlery and RANDALL-MADE . Hey Pete! Love the channel and you sir are a comedic genius!! If you like both of those knives, they seem very similar and within the same league as the Chris Reeve Pacific. It might be hard/expensive to get your hands on in Australia, but it seems like you might enjoy it alongside these knives for comparison; especially compared to the TRC
Qui in Italia l’m7 costa meno della metà del trc,ma il lionsteel è un industriale pur se di alto livello il trc è semicustom con un acciaio sinterizzato .Complimenti per le recensioni accurate oltre che spassose ❤
Thanks for the video. Any way to get your thoughts or perhaps a video on the mid size or larger survive GSO knives? In comparison to the these two and maybe even an a1 pro?
Both are cool, but pass on the choils. Get a Junglass2, a Lansky 4-rod Turn box and a decent strop. Like that Lion Steel sheath? You’ll really like the one that comes with the Junglass2 ($180 on amazon). Aside from not breaking, the absolute #1 most important factor in a legit sporting, bushcraft, apocalypse, shtf knife is being able to easily switch between two kinds of edges in just a few passes… stropped to hair popping for woodwork or light passes with a fine ceramic rod for cutting meat and fibrous materials. Sure, the Lansky and strop will keep all sorts of stainless blades cutting too, but its a helluvalot more work and still doesn’t get as sharp as 1095.
Pity you did not expand a bit on the alternatives, like Falkniven and Cold Steel offerings. Personally, My preference is for the CS Trail Master (I have one), and I'm often baffled by comments about the handle. I find it PERFECT, but that might be because I don't have a huge hand. The handle absorbs shock far better than Micarta, slips less even when wet (with say perspiration), and generally points very well. Handle material is always a balance between grippy and abrasiveness - that is a fact, and one each person has to decide for him/herself. If I was doing lots of heavy work with it, I'd definitely wear gloves! [ I like your comment about saws, by the way. I'm a firm believer in using the most appropriate tool for the job. In terms of cross-cutting, nothing tops a decent saw! Axes are OK but the weight penalty and single-use limitation means it's weight-expensive, and there are good alternatives. However, if one is talking home use, or a permanent camp situation, I'd include an axe. (I have one at home) ] For me, 7 inch bladed knives sort of fall between two stools (like kissing your sister). ;-) Doesn't perform quite as well as a BIG knife (eg 9 inch + blade), and is quite a bit bulkier than a knife like the CS SRK, which for many, is the default belt knife of all time. So with my Trail Master and SRK, where would this size knife (7') fit in? It doesn't. BTW, I agree about the term Sport Knives - meaningless. Thanks for the fun video.
i've always thought that, in hell, you have to endlessly sort out rolls of cling-film that someone else has got brutishly frustrated with. however, chopping through 2x4s with a balanced straight blade - that might be something you get to do on bank holidays, in hell.
Molleta designed Lion Steel knives are actually really sweet for the money in Canada. I like his designs and the fit and finish is stunning for the money. I dint get how they can sell their knives for reasonable prices while 3xtrema Ratio are super pricey.

hmm my message did not get through. Was just saying about the KME, found a company - gritomatic - that sell accessories for various sharpeners, including the KME. One nice thing there is "the universal stone holder" for the KME, so you can use larger stones that are not made for the KME sa such but for other sharpeners, like the Edge Pro. Just ordered the univ. stone holder my self

Absolutely awesome review I've been eyeballing these for a while and love the looks of them and they just look very capable but the price was always just out of my reach and I'd spend a little less and get a bit smaller knife lol partly because I already own half dozen 7in + blade choppers including a badass Gavko custom knifechette and it doesn't get any better than that sucker! You what actually disappointed me for the money? The Bark river jx5 it is just too thick and chunky and unnecessarily heavy so it doesn't really bite into material like some of my thinner more high performance choppers do! I mean you'd never break it but then again when would you ever really carry it lol
Intentional or not, I love the irony on the hatchet in the background of the chopping scene
Hard to see surviving the apocalypse with only two premium sport knives, you should definitely get more.

I can do anything with my 60 dollar survival knife that one can do with a 420 dollar one.
@@jtallday31yeah right, I'd like a demo on utube please😅
Now you can see performance and delivery options like in this video and know what you're in for before buying. Helps having better than a teenager's pocketbook now too. Thanks for the video!
I will say this has shoved me over the decision making edge and I'll be ordering one within next few days!
Painfully dumb but incredibly entertaining. Thanks Pete 👍🏻
That opening sequence was truly fucking funny. Thanks Pete.
Pete's English narrator accent is wonderful
Qui in Italia l’m7 costa meno della metà del trc,ma il lionsteel è un industriale pur se di alto livello il trc è semicustom con un acciaio sinterizzato .Complimenti per le recensioni accurate oltre che spassose ❤
Thanks for the video. Any way to get your thoughts or perhaps a video on the mid size or larger survive GSO knives? In comparison to the these two and maybe even an a1 pro?
Oii Pete ya spud, with the LionSteel it has a crisp edge for the fire steel down at the base of the handle hence the gap in the handle.
(I have one at home) ]
For me, 7 inch bladed knives sort of fall between two stools (like kissing your sister). ;-) Doesn't perform quite as well as a BIG knife (eg 9 inch + blade), and is quite a bit bulkier than a knife like the CS SRK, which for many, is the default belt knife of all time.
Love the videos learn a lot about the different steels get u a William colins knife love to see u test one out
Molleta designed Lion Steel knives are actually really sweet for the money in Canada.
I like his designs and the fit and finish is stunning for the money.
I dint get how they can sell their knives for reasonable prices while 3xtrema Ratio are super pricey.
You are the king of knife nerds.
I keep watching all your videos.
What does this say about me?
Thank you for always being informative and entertaining.
Live long and prosper.
Brilliant review, love both knives. Can you tell me the make and model of the sharpening tool you used in the video, many thanks
Are you happier with the M7 purchase. Over the T5? Which one is better overall
hmm my message did not get through.
I appreciate your vids, thanks. You've helped me avoid more than few knives that look good on paper, but how would I have ever known about leaving blade coating on my food with you showing us? That right there was enough to turn me off the m7
If you do that treelimb chopping here in Holland you must be prepared to kill some forrest wardens too afterwards if you don't want a gigantic fine.
Even on your own property?
Here in Australia, it depends on what the tree is and where you live. Pete's out in the country and that looked like a decorative tree in his yard rather than a native out in the bush.
yes, one of my personal trees. Supposed to only chop deadfall here too, when in parks etc
@1k horsepwr, above a certain height tree, yes.
@@klaassiersma4892 wow... Im assuming then that no one purchases wooded land with the intent to use the timber to build their dwelling, or shops...

My apocalypse is my favorite knife but I'm also too nervous to take it out and maybe lose it 😂
@@Cz82 i must be crazy because i use this knife litteraly every camping trip since i got it😂 and i beat it hahaha
@@gtrul3s387 I'm sure it can take a beating but I'm afraid of some Ranger making up a reason to confiscate it 😂
Gˋday Pete, again a really good video. 👍 I really like your style making them. „Sparky“... Bloody hilarious 😂😂😂 Keep up the great work! Greetings from Germany. ✌️
Ah my favourite knife-bro, Pietro from Italy
19:54 _SO_ many North American men gonna feel attacked jajajaja
Also, Pete's Italian is way better than my Australian.
Nice comparison. Is the coating oil the M7 DLC?
