I just recently had to get new rear drums for the first time. I did get new shocks, and I replaced the side window moldings because they were cracking. I could use a new steering wheel, and some of the radio buttons are worn out. Overall, it has been a great car.
I have a 2012 LX and I just hit 347,000 miles. Only a starter and a ignition tumbler were the only major problems till now. The ignition could have been because I had weight with a lot of keys on it.

Took out the battery to have more space and tighten it up. I drew a white like across the transmission block and the switch bolt to see if it loosens up but so far so good. 3k miles since that happened and it’s still nice and tight.
Thank you for the vid. I own a 2012 SI with 285K miles on her. Do all my own work. Replaced front hub bearings twice, and rear once. Had that intake air filter tube fail. No codes with MAP sensor. Best car I've ever owned .
Sent you a superthanks because you absolutely nailed the hesitation and slight bucking from a stop. My car has 190K and I drain and fill the tranny every 30k but the bucking was very concerning to me. I popped the hood, and checked that tube and its cracked at least half way around. I duct taped it till I can replace it and instantly the skipping was gone! I also have the oil seeping from the plate on the side of the block. Can't thank you enough for putting this video together.

As a mechanic myself, I can assure you these hondas are very reliable. I own one, a 2013 civic 1.8L and all I have done is regular oil changes, transmission fluid and filter changes every 30k miles, brakes and rotors when needed. However, this is just standard maintenance. On the otehr hand, the only fix I did was getting a "D" light flashing, which is common, and its not necessarily a transmission problem but a transmission fluid pressure sensor, which is external. Also, a minor oil leak coming from the timing chain inspection plate, which is very easy to repair. I do my own repairs on both my vehicles, including my Toyota camry. I've seen other makes and models such as GMC, Chevy and their timing chains have snapped at only 35 k miles because of their horrible eco tec engines. The hyundais and kias are as worse as GM and chevy, severe oil consumption, piston rings problems, engine blows up, catch on fire due to short under fuse box. They fail at around 45 to 65k miles, sometimes even sooner.. since Nissan merged with Renault, its quality has gone down the drain.
@@Mddle_Man don't worry it's not that terrible. It is a sensor located outside the transmission. But, you said you got the D light flashing after you took it your mechanic. They should fix it since it wasn't like that before you brought it in.
Consumer Reports still continues to rate the 2015 Civic as the most reliable in the entire Civic's history. Even the new 2023 Civic can't beat 2015's rating. Today, Consumer Reports lists Honda Civic as #3 most reliable, after Toyota Corolla and Mazda 3, down from #1 when it peaked in 2015.
@@EndritBajramiEshte21 2012-2015 are all rated excellent in relaibity by Consumer Reports. 2015 is the highest-rated, while the 2013 is the last Civic with 5-speed automatic instead of CVT that may bring extra durability with more miles total in service.
Glad most of these are “simple fixes”! I have a 2015 Civic for college/daily community and LOVE IT. I also checked out other cars like Toyota, Mazda, Subaru but Hondas will always be on my list 🙌💯🎊
I've owned my 12 LX for 7 years and have 195k. It's been a really good car. The auto will flare at times but the service is rather easy. Never uses any oil. I like the 2012 because it is so low key.
I have a '12 Coupe EX and I gotta say I love it. I've been using it to deliver pizzas while I got through college so I've put some serious wear and tear on it but it holds up strong. Replaced starter, battery, and brake pads once, other than that just oil changes every few months. Gonna look into maybe getting some suspension work done because it's starting to ride a little squeaky, but still drives fine. It's my recommendation for a first time car owner, just because it needs minimal work and never gives me problems My only gripe is that especially on the coupe, the engine bay is so small and crammed in, making it hard to work on anything. It's also so low to the ground that you have to jack it up to do any fluid changes. Also catches a lot of snow on the underside due to this in the winter
Just purchased a 2014 Civic LX sedan - Grandma only had 34000 miles on it! It’s a little cobalt blue beauty! Your vid was informative and easy listening and much appreciated. Goodonya mate!🤠🦘 I subscribed!
Checking out a 13 for my friend. looks like timing chain engine and last year before they went to the cvt. Engine block issues was corrected all in all the 13 looks like a great year to buy happy she is going with it. Can't wait to get her in that car hopefully a lot of trouble free years ahead. Thank you for the review.
My girlfriend has a 2015. 151k. She's owned it since new. Trans went bad at 98k. They replaced it under warranty. I just changed the fluid and filter at the cooler last week. That throttle body hose went bad but the smog texh pointed it out. I replaced that for $35 I think. The trans fill plug used to pop out prior to her trans going bad. I'll keep an eye on the breather as I just learned ut was there. This video is spot on. Great job!
2012 coup civ here. Replaced starter, alt, trans filter, couple of bearings. Did the work myself except the bearings. Car doesn't seem to be as good as the 8th gen, but it isn't bad. Given, I drove this on the beach about 100 times.
nice to see people loving this car. I have a 2015 EX, 110K miles, I only commute it for work and a 2019 Sienna for family travels. Other than the ac fan blower which cost me $20, never have any issues on my civic.
I have a 2014 EXL w/136K and have had very few issues. As noted in this video, I had to replace the rear calipers and the air tube from the air cleaner to the air intake. The car did not throw any codes for the air tube though. I've also been advised to change the rubber hydraulic fluid hose feeding the rear calipers if you experience the rear caliper sticking as the friction caused by the sticking will likely cause the hose to cause additional issues. I do change the oil ~ every 5K and the trany fluid anytime the thing starts doing a bit of searching. I have not had success changing the water pump as the bolt holding the tensioner is a bear to remove. I even took the thing to my local mom and pop garage and they could not get the bolt off. Evidently this is a common issue with Hondas and I had the same issue with my wife's 2012 MDX. I will be giving the water pump replacement another attempt soon as the water pump is not going to last forever. For the next try, I'm going to remove the passenger side engine mount and lover the engine a couple of inches. This will enable me to use an impact driver directly to the tensioner bolt. Honda could have placed a hole for access to the tensioner bolt as I've seen in other Honda models. I've been buying Hondas sine 1981 and I believe the 81 Civic and the 2014 EXL and 2013 SI are the best vehicles I've owned. Thanks for the vid as it's always good to hear what issues others have so we can check on our cars before they become an issue.
I have a 2013 2D LX with 96K. It vibrates at idle, especially in cold weather. I know it's prolly the belt n tensioner. So glad to have youtubers like you to help me diagnose my vehicles. Thank you.
The auto 2013-2015 Acura ILX is the same platform with a larger displacement version of the same (R series) engine and the same conventional (non-CVT) automatic. So if you want to avoid the CVT, is a good alternative.
Did you do your transmission maintenance? Because around every 60,000 miles you gotta replace that cvt oil. Ive done some hondas where the trans oil smells like manure from how old it is.
Great cars, one of my personal favs to work on. I love the 2012. It's so basic, bland and ugly that I love it. Wierd thing, I saw a 2014 coupe with the same 1.8l and it had a cracked block! Same spot in the front near where the block heater (or engine coolant drain) and oil pressure sending unit is. Super wierd as I though it was limited to the 2006-early 09 ish era.
Hmmm, yeah I’ve never seen a cracked block on these but I suppose it can happen especially if some water concentrated coolant was used. Appreciate the input! Ps basic works 💯
Just bought a 2014 Civic EX-L Sedan with 43K miles 2 months ago. Clean as a whistle inside & out. I'm going to store it for the winter, I like it that much & want ti keep it in tip-top shape. Sold my 2020 Civic Si 6 speed coup w/23K miles to get the EX-L cause the Si was too small. I like the EX-L better than the Si because it's more practical & functional plus I don't have a payment now!!
I have a 2012 Civic LX with 130k miles. I've encountered many of the same problems you mentioned. 1) Warped rotors from hitting too many potholes. 2) Shaky bake calibers. 3) Torn air intake manifold.
There is no internal transmission filter because it is behind the engine on the driver side. It looks like an old school fuel filter and easy to replace as well.
I have 136k on my 2014 civic and my CVT is still good. I get the CVT fluid changed every 50k miles at the Honda dealership, I believe the manual recommends 40k which I would recommend if you live in an area with hills. I live in Florida I still have the original alternator, struts and shocks, etc the only things I’ve had done is oil changes rotate/replacement tires, alignment, brakes, serpentine belt, batteries, and changing all fluids, oh yeah and spark plugs. Very recently, my screen with the mileage went out… it was a pricey 1000 dollar repair. Still running strong tho!
Passenger check air bag light is also a defect for certain years. The light comes on with no previous collisions. I believe it will be covered by manufacturer until 2030.
Its a good vehicle I have a 2014 civic with 242k miles on it. In my opinion it is fairly reliable vehicle but I had a corolla too and i would say corolla reliability is much better. for me the major work I had was to change the alternator, rear shocks, right brake caliper jammed and leaked. Rotors, brakes and tires couple times other than that regular maintenance so not bad. keep changing transmission oil after every 35k and I never had issues with transmission. I change the oil every 10k, plugs around 20k and flush all fluids around 100k. so im happy with it and obviously steering wheel seems a little worn out now but thats not a biggie I will put a cover on it.
My daughter has a 2014 Honda civic lx with about 95k. She bought it used two years ago. The transmission cap has popped out because the breather was clogged. I cleaned the breather and turned it towards the back so that when driving it does not get clogged. I also put an electrical tape around the cap to slightly increase its diameter and make it fit more tightly. I also put a zip tie on the cap top metal piece (tied it to a hose) so I don’t lose it if it pops out again. I did replace the transmission filter and drained and filled the transmission fluid twice. (There were signs of squirrels eating nuts right around the transmission cap. I was afraid some nuts might have fallen in).so far so good. I think it is a reliable car overall.
I got the 2013 Lx , i had never had a problem except this week - my battery , alternator , the starter and all the fuses good but i keep losing power once a while like yesterday i went to work then when i took off leaving the work my car won’t start qnd it keeps doing it every 2 months , I did use a jumper but i know that the problem will come again - i ned help asap and thanks
I live in canada..i have 2013 honda civic EX..315,000km on it .i do routine maintenance myself..its easy car to maintain.. i still have original caliper on it..replaced both axle, serpentine belt and next one is engine and transmission mount....this car is really fantastic.
I have a '12 coupe. Runs great, looks great but 2 main issues are torque converter shudder and rear tire noise. The shuddering stops after changing the trans fluid but comes back after a couple weeks of driving. The road noise is unfixable and only the 2012 model from what I've heard. Fortunately, I don't take it on long trips because the noise is really loud
How many miles on it? Rear cupping is pretty common on modern day Hondas and happened even more so with infrequent tire rotations and aggressive tire treads.
@@BCautosutions The road noise has been since day 1. It rides real nice, smooth, I always keep up on maintenence. I've read numerous blogs about the '12s being especially noisy. There is not much as far as insulation goes. I'm going to try laying down butyl/foil sheets especially in the trunk and rear wheel wells. Maybe because it's a coupe it's loud?
That little pop off for the transmission that you need to clean out with air popped off for me, I just found it and I just bought it 2 days ago from a dealership
@bcautosolutions The plate you say leaks at the beginning of the video, is that what hides the timing chain tensioner? If so, is that an easy replacement? I have yet to find a video on replacing that tensioner. I have had a slight rattle noise coming from there for hears and its annoying, comes and goes and I'm almost certai its the timing belt tensioner but want to confirm thx
I have 2012 honda Civic lx with 132,000 I've replaced suspension parts, rubber gaskets, starter, crank shaft sensor but nothing to big of a deal... The car has been very reliable and affordable to maintain.
I have a 2012 , is the only difference cosmetics and interior? Mine just hit 90k and I get occasional start up issues and got a code for the crank angle sensor.
The turn signal/orange light on the front drivers side keeps burning out. I couldn’t get the new one in and wound up getting like 3 stuck in the casing 😭 is there a wiring issue for that to be happening?
I’ve 2015 EX, 92k, so far no major issues. Except oxygen sensor wires getting chewed out twice within the first year of owning the car. It was fixed with a replaced wires and rodent tape wrap up. Time belt cracked once after 8 years of owning - which is expected. I would have thought it would have occurred much later. Other than that cars been fine 🤞🏾
Hello! Thanks for the video! I’m going to check the mass airflow sensor and that tube. My concern is our 2013 civic is very weak all of a sudden. Just low on power no hesitation just weak acceleration. We have econo mode off. Any thoughts other than what you mentioned in this video thanks again.
I’ve had my 2012 LX coupe for 10 years now 270km .I’ve have to put a new clutch in alternator starter and sway bar links not too bad. The Intake hose is about to be replaced for the second time 😂
My 13 EX-L has been gold as expected. Very few years of Corollas and Civics have trending issues and because Honda and Toyota and the leaders and CARE instead of Nissan and domestic junk they FIX the problems.
Just got 2008 (190k miles) and 2012 (168k) both EX. 08 needed front struts and vtech solenoid gasket. 2012 needed nothing!Bought 9 Hondas so far some new some used. Always get 1 owner cars in NC. Cant go wrong.
Which year has the CVT and the automatic transmission? I have a 2021 and when I search for transmission fluid i see one with a dip stick and i see one with a plug only
The CVT was introduced on the Honda Civic in 2014. I have a 2015 and wish they separated the CVT model years. No complaints though. I have approximately 88,000 miles and done nothing but fluid changes, new battery and serviced the front brakes.
A common problem with the 2013 Honda Civic when the airbag or brake system light keeps coming on is a lower level of electricity. Change the battery to make certain that the battery is fully chargeable. If that doesn't work and if it's NOT the alternator then a common problem is the electronic load detector (ELD) which is a voltage regulator and it's in the fuse box. There's a video on how to change it. It's a small brown rectangular module and you have to remove 3 or 4 screws to get it out because of the metal piece that passes through it.
AC system blows weak, the stereo will flicker eventually at random times, it sounds weird coming out of the tail pipe like the engine has issues, the LX model seats are the most uncomfortable seats.
I did a stupid thing a year ago, I saw that transmission rubber plugged pop out, so I got a transmission flush, from fire stone, I think that might’ve been a problem with my transmission, and the reason why it got damaged, don’t really know.
If they didn’t use the correct fluid it’s very possible that’s what damaged it. That plug popping out is very common and a simple fix. I have a video addressing that 👍🏻
Love the video has a lot of great information in it! I just have one question tho. I have a 15 Honda with around 28k miles. If I let it sit and idle for about 10 mins it starts to overheat and I can’t figure out why. I’ve replaced both the top and bottom coolant sensors as well as the thermostat. I have noticed that no matter both the ac fan and the rad fan do not kick on. I also replaced the relays related to those. Do you know what could be causing my this over heating issue?
Battery deteriorated, as this point they are out of warranty and chances of them failing are relatively high and cost a few thousand to replace. Other then that, pretty good cars.
my 2012 civic lx coupe with 306,000miles and never had a single issue , i change the oil every 3,500-4,000 miles , i use Platunum Pennzoil full synthetic 5w-20. At 317,500 miles i've decided to get rid of it due to a electrical issue caused by a horrible mechanic , broke my heart bc the car had a lot more life in it
2014 Civic LX. Changed the alternator through RUclips. Was making weird noises and had no power. Looked under the car, it was transmission fluid...I was frustrated. Turns out the sensor on the transmission came loose. Tighten the sensor and refilled the transmission but I need to change the filter. My civic is at 18x,xxx miles
I have a 2013 Civic with almost 400,000 kms on it. I feel some viberation when the car accelerates but stops after it gains speed. I sense that this viberation happens in the beginning of every lower gear changes. I have changed the oil and transmission has been throughly flushed with new fluid. Any ideas ? Thanks for the video sir
Looking into either a 13 civic lx or a 18 ex i really want the 18 but the ac problems and the cvt kinda scare me. The 13 here in Cali are so overpriced unfortunately:/ but i know they are super reliable with the automatic transmission.

Have a 2012 Replaced the cracked intake hose. You will need a scan tool to reset idle after cleaning the throttle and maf sensor Replaced rotors 80k miles for shaking. If you live somewhere with salt, the parking brake will stick on the caliper... clean with a wire brush and soak with wd-40 twice a year. Front struts will need replaced eventually Rear brake caliper piston cracked and leaked fluid after hard braking in negative 40 temperatures.... If you own a manual, the slave cylinder will start squeaking and need to be cleaned/greased.
A cracked intake hose for a while with hesitation I thought it was the transmission but it was just the intake. Did yours throw a code? If you run it for a long time with a cracked intake hose will that make the engine run lean?
@truthseeker1203 I'm not sure what the tool was. The basic obd11 tool reset wasnt enough. My cousin is a mechanic. He hooked a computer looking tablet to it and started diagnosing and resetting things including the throttle valve (which i was cleaning inside of while changing the intake hose). The difference was day and night when he was done using the computer.
Mine has recently been shifting weird like it’s not in sync with my driving. It drives fine but when I slow down it will feel like my transmission is making me slow down faster than I want to so I have to pat my brakes. But then it clunks if I stop to fast sometimes. Other times it stops and shifts down just fine.. could it be a sensor ? Or could it be a brake problem causing a bad shift ? It also will make a clunk sometimes slowing down in traffic around 40 and then reaccelerate. I’ve changed my fluid a few times recently to make sure it wasn’t bad or dirty fluid. I haven’t dropped the pan though and changed the transmission filter. Only the transmission cooler filter in the front. Could my internal filter be clogged? Thanks for any help from anyone 😅
Man bro I need you to fix mine , something is wrong , some lights keep popping up but nothing really happens.. it runs perfectly but lights keep going on
Electrical issues can pop up from a weak battery. If the lights seem random and only turn on sometimes go have your battery tested to see if it's weak. A lot of auto part stores will even check it for free.
@@jtreworks thank you btw but it’s weird bc I’ve done it and changed my battery but the ABS light comes on , tire pressure , traction control , power steering , brake , and a few more that come on and go away randomly. I've owned my 12 LX for 7 years and have 195k. It's been a really good car. The auto will flare at times but the service is rather easy. Never uses any oil. I like the 2012 because it is so low key.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing and best of luck!
Does it ever jerk when coming to a stop? Or act jerky around 30mph?
What do you mean flare at times ?
I have a '12 Coupe EX and I gotta say I love it. I've been using it to deliver pizzas while I got through college so I've put some serious wear and tear on it but it holds up strong. Replaced starter, battery, and brake pads once, other than that just oil changes every few months. Gonna look into maybe getting some suspension work done because it's starting to ride a little squeaky, but still drives fine.
It's my recommendation for a first time car owner, just because it needs minimal work and never gives me problems
My only gripe is that especially on the coupe, the engine bay is so small and crammed in, making it hard to work on anything. It's also so low to the ground that you have to jack it up to do any fluid changes. Also catches a lot of snow on the underside due to this in the winter

My daughter has a 2014 Honda civic lx with about 95k.
She bought it used two years ago. The transmission cap has popped out because the breather was clogged. I cleaned the breather and turned it towards the back so that when driving it does not get clogged.

I got my grandfathers 14 civic 130k miles after he died I only had it 4 months and sofar I spent probably 6000$ in repairs. the wiring harness is made of soy to be eco friendly so if you live rural the mice and squirrels will eat it and in my case it messed up the cvt so that needed repaired. then the keyless entry failed so I needed that because the car refused o shut off followed by I think the the remote sensing so the car would shut off mid drive. everything else in the vid was mentioned the rear calipers and rotors the vacuum line.
