There were a famous Arab poet in the umayyad dynasty called Qais Ibn Al-mulawwah who were madly in love with a girl named Layla, he wrote many beautiful poems about her but she got married to someone else and basically it was his impossible love story and he was called after that "Majnun layla" meaning the crazy about layla, and since then Layla became a symbol of love in Arabic culture especially the impossible one and when Arabs want to mention their loved one in anonyme they will refer to her as Layla and that's how it became popular
