    The flashback scene is so much more sad when you realize Catra was not only afraid of losing Adora because she was her only friend, but also because Shadow Weaver said point blank that the only reason she kept Catra alive was because Adora liked her. Catra fully believes that love is limited and that you can only give so much love away, meaning that if Adora liked Lonnie, Catra believed she couldn't love her. Catra's entire existence rested on the fact that Adora was her friend, so Catra would naturally be even more scared of Adora leaving even though she was already so afraid of it because she cared for Adora so much.

    There's an excellent video from "Five by Five Takes" about the symbolism of the corridor scene. It means way more than just choosing between light and dark. Au contraire. Remember, it's Horde Prime's "light" that shines above everyone (which in his ideology is becoming a "perfect" being in his image. No emotions, no attachments, just another part of the machine which is what Catra almost became) and it's in the shadows that Catra felt safe (notice that her talk with Adora is in a shadowy corner), while Prime's clones want to "Cast out the shadows".

    For the entirety of season 4, Catra was haunted by her decisions and the things she did. She could push it all away and simply work without giving herself the chance to think about anything, but she simply can't do that here. Since arriving on Prime's ship, Catra had time to think about all the guilt she pushed out of her mind in season 4 and let herself feel it. For the very first time she let herself feel truly sorry for her actions, and it's why she chose to save Glimmer and by extension Adora. Even though Catra's mental health issues can sometimes cloud her judgment, Catra is still extremely clever and was probably aware of the fact that she is as good as dead as soon as she got on Prime's ship, especially after she lost the chance to leverage the information she had on the Heart of Etheria. She knew that she would die one way or another, and she felt that it was better to at least die trying to correct some of her mistakes.

    • @TheGreater-ScopeVillain
      @TheGreater-ScopeVillain 2 года назад +7

      It just goes to show just how evil and terrifying Horde Prime is - a being who so utterly dwarfs even the likes of Catra in terms of villainy, so much so that she's been scared into finally switching sides, for fear of what he may do to her and the people that she loves, not to mention the rest of the universe. Seeing the Galactic Horde's armada effortlessly devastate an entire planet that morning really put it into perspective when Glimmer straight up told her that Prime intends to wipe out all other life in the universe with the Heart of Etheria.

    I think this episode shows another strength of the show I don't see pointed out very often, and it's the way it uses music. Any time Promise is played it's guaranteed tears will be shed, but the reason *why* that track in particular is still so impactful is because it's used in just the right moments that require a track that is connected to the bond between Catra and Adora. Every time it's played it either displays how the way Catra and Adora grew up impacted them, a further crack in their friendship, or in this case in particular, the step towards mending it. Corridors is also a perfect choice for this episode because we get a slight glimpse of it back in Promise, which directly links it to Catra and Adora's childhood, and we hear Corridors play fully the first time in this episode when we see Catra and Adora as children again. The music truly makes this episode so much more powerful that it would've been on its own.

    I know it's been said before, but AJ Michalka is just fantastic in this role. Her delivery in Catra's talks with Glimmer, just the wavering fear when she says "Adora's on that ship, isn't she?" is so palpable. And of course, her screaming apology, while understanding that this is also essentially a goodbye message to Adora, is so incredibly sad.

      @@tomnorton4277 In addition to being intensely anti-recovery and lazily following in the footsteps of how almost every female character with messy trauma is almost always flatly vilified and then destroyed, that would be an incredibly boring and basic waste of a character and be at odds with the series' other deconstructions of culturally Christian morality around healing and redemption, as well as at odds with every other theme central to the show.
      She-ra is a show about healing. Catra's arc is about healing. This is somewhat difficult for her to do when she is permanently dead.
      I really don't understand why you insist on hanging around when you consistently fail to understand the central tenets and ideas of the show. It's like watching Star Wars and hating the Force.

    • @tomnorton4277
      @tomnorton4277 2 года назад

      @@CharlotteSWeb-oh7ou No, it's like watching Star Wars and accepting that Darth Vader's redemption sucked. Like Catra, he had already lost everything and therefore wasn't sacrificing anything. He did the bare minimum but suddenly he's a Force Ghost, no questions asked. He didn't even need to do the training that Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Yoda went through.
      One of the reasons Vader's redemption is weak is because, unlike Padme, Obi-Wan and Ahsoka, he barely knew Luke. They had a grand total of ONE heart to heart when they weren't chopping each others hands off. If Luke hadn't been his son, Vader wouldn't have lifted a finger to help him, just like Catra didn't lift a finger to protect Adora while she and Glimmer were having dinner with Horde Prime. While Glimmer was begging for Adora's life, Catra kept her selfish mouth shut. She only decided to switch sides when she realised that Prime was far too smart and far too powerful for her to overcome.
      Also, it's pretty hard to heal if you just go back to a toxic relationship.
      Resorting to themes as an argument is laughable. If a story or character arc is badly written, it's badly written. Themes are the last defence of desperate idiots who have run out of ways to defend bad writing.

      @curioushybrid 2 года назад +12

      @@tomnorton4277 I think it's fair to say that we have pretty different reads on Catra and her motivations. But one thing I'll note is that 'having something to sacrifice' isn't the only way back from the dark side. In fact, I think one of the biggest problems with Vader's story is that he pulled a standard 'Death = Redemption': "oh, the bad guy made one heroic sacrifice, so now everything's forgiven and we never have to deal with any consequences." Catra _tried_ to pull a Death = Redemption in this ep and got denied - like Zuko, she has to live and work for redemption instead (I can say this without too much fear of spoilers, as they've seen up to 5x05). She already lost everything at the end of S4; seeing a chance to claw some of it back with Horde Prime gave her a moment of respite, a chance to double down as she always has, but now even that's crumbled away. The point of her arc here isn't that she has something to give up; it's that she finally has to recognise that she's hit the bottom, has nothing left to cling to, and has to figure out what she truly wants and who she wants to be.

    Ahhh! I love this episode! It absolutely destroyed me the first time around.
    Just to throw my two cents into the ongoing "Catra Redemption Arc" debate - some people seem to have a very binary view of redemption, where if a previously villainous character isn't subjected to X amount of suffering, then their redemption arc isn't "earned". I think part of the problem with that view is a conflation of redemption with forgiveness. Sometimes, when someone says that a character hasn't earned their redemption, I think what they really mean is "I would not have forgiven this person and I don't think the characters should have either".
    The thing is, forgiveness and redemption are two separate concepts. You can forgive someone who's bad to the bone and has no intention of changing, and someone can choose to change their ways and start doing good without a single other person ever even knowing it.
    Lastly ... who decides when someone is redeemed, really? By what right? I'm reminded of a passage from The Dispossessed, by Ursula K. Le Guin:
    “For we each of us deserve everything, every luxury that was ever piled in the tombs of the dead kings, and we each of us deserve nothing, not a mouthful of bread in hunger. Have we not eaten while another starved? Will you punish us for that? Will you reward us for the virtue of starving while others ate? No man earns punishment, no man earns reward. Free your mind of the idea of deserving, the idea of earning, and you will begin to be able to think.”

    Hands down the best episode so far at this point in the series. This felt like the catharsis we needed after so much time spent watching Catra fall further and further down her villain arc throughout the entire show. I really wasn't expecting such a big moment so early in the season, but it sets the precedent for the rest of the season and the twists and turns it continues to take.

    I’ve waxed lyrical about this before but the storytelling of this series is just ridiculous. This is a 20 minute episode that sees huge changes yet all of it is absolutely in character and brings together the previous 4 seasons pretty much seamlessly. Catra’s path to this point should be a mess yet when you look back almost every decision she makes is born of knowing with absolute certainty that showing weakness is borderline lethal. The rank and file cadets don’t have that as they weren’t given Shadow Weaver’s direct attention. Also very interesting little throwaway line when Glimmer’s confronting her over telling Prime about the ship: “I’ll always find a way out”. It’s not, and never has been, about conquest or power. It’s about survival. Unfortunately, thanks to the monumental abuse of her childhood, she associates that with having enough power to control the situation…
    Fortunately this also makes her an absolute beast when it comes to beating the *bleep* out of people. The instant she shifts allegiances things start looking up for the heroes. It takes, what, five clones dogpiling her to stop her and even then she’s only in a position they can do that to teleport Glimmer away. Up until that point she really didn’t seem to be struggling much at taking them down. While I’m sure sheer numbers would have done the trick eventually you can’t help but wonder how much of that command ship she’d have carved her way through in other circumstances. Oh and can I just say I love her decision to rip and tear on the side of good is accompanied by a guitar riff?
    The cast continues to be absolutely stellar (heh, sorry, couldn’t resist) and some of my absolute favourite Adora lines are in this episode. It’s all small, throwaway stuff but Aimee Carerro just hits all of them out of the park. AJ, naturally, just tears your heart out at every step of the way and you can hear all of Catra’s confusion and pain lurking behind every damn word.
    What else… oh, right. If anyone out there’s surprised by Catra’s blush may I just remind you this is a character who was shown in the first few minutes of the first episode *literally sleeping on Adora’s bed*. Be surprised they even put the hint in a ‘kids show’ (I hate that phrase btw) but it’s absolutely in keeping with what we’ve seen. Which reminds me:
    Glimmer: “Catra! Do one good thing in your life!”
    Catra: “…. Wait, Adora’s a good thing… Great idea Sparkles, see you later.”
    Glimmer: “That’s not what I meant!”Glimmer: “That’s not what I meant!”

      I've done some analysis about this that basically states that Catra having her basic need to be safe and secure violated on the hierarchy of needs is what drives a lot of her evil and constrains what good she might have done. To her for most of the show she does as much good as she thinks she can get away with ( and often doesn't ). Small kind gestures are frequently punished, sometimes severely, disguising those kindnesses makes it easier to get away with them. A verbal-tick version of this is the 'Catra does something nice' 'Adora teases about liking her' 'Catra vehemently denies' thing, it's a joke to mask a real connection that would otherwise be a liability.
      What separates Corridors is that she's had the time to process that if she makes a move here she's going to get caught so instead of doing some small gesture and catching hell for it ( like tipping her hand at the dinner to save Adora or not telling Prime about Adora coming ) she works backwards from 'I'm going to catch hell' and then maximizes her impact with that as a known outcome.

    So we're finally here! This is one of my favorite episodes of the whole series. Catra's point of breaking is amazingly epic and satisfying. Many of us can't help but compare any redemption arc with Zuko's, but while Catra's is quite different, I do love it as its own thing. It's specially tragic the fact that what finally triggers it it's that she kinda aknowledges she's as good as dead. Her actions are basically suicidal, as they've been for a while, but this time she does act in regret of what she's being doing, finally owning her mistakes, and even the pain in her history with Adora
    Also, the scene with Entrapta floating around in space while Adora messes the ship up and Bow has a small breakdown lives Rent free in My brain forever. I love it.

  • @JenABlue-ed1bw

    The way I've always read the focus on corridors in this ep is that corridors are liminal spaces--that is, space that exists between other spaces, space that you cross through to a destination, not a destination in itself. Liminal spaces typically symbolize transformation and the point of contact between worlds--the known known vs unknown, reality/now vs memory/past, mundane vs magical, life vs death, that kind of thing. (Liminality literally means being on the threshold.)
    And that's what this episode is about, Catra hovering on the edge of finally starting to transform, and then beginning that journey by rescuing Glimmer, while Adora and co have their own more literal journey into the unknown across the ultimate liminal space, outer space itself.

    Worth considering that recently we have had scenes with Catra and Glimmer back to back a glass wall, almost reflections of each other. Then, and comparisons between have been noted before obviously in past seasons and episodes, but to reflect... both can be emotional and impulsive and lean into, and rely their own intuition than external sources. Also consider how jealous and possessive Glimmer was, towards Bow at the Princess Prom, with Catra and Adora in this episodes flashback? They have a lot of similarities right?
    Now consider that Glimmer was raised by Angela and Micah... and Catra's nearest equivalent were Shadow Weaver and Horde? That Glimmer would have experienced abundant and unconditional love and reminded of her value? Where Catra learned early that she was only tolerated because Adora was fond of her, that love and acceptance were conditional. Its not hard to see that how having many similar traits and characteristics, but dramatically different backgrounds and environments can affect and influence how people behave and their tendencies.
    Which sorts of leads into redemption ideas as well. Is redemption a single action and moment? Or is it a process? An ongoing exercise in awareness, attitudes and direction? Whats more of a redemption? If Catra presses a big button that says "Save the Earth" or she starts to examine her inner fears, anxieties, insecurities, and tries to think about harm she may have inflicted on others, with her actions, and attempts to avoid doing so, and maybe apologise or make amends when and where possible. Which... may also never be possible either. Sometimes harm can't be undone or their isn't an equivalent action, but sometimes the important part, is a person is on that path, and thats what they would do now, and in the future. In contrast, if a person kills a unicorn, thats bad, but hey, later I saved a Unicorn too? Ahh I am redeemed now. Great!
    So personally, I don't think Catra needs to do anything to redeem herself, but ideally, if one say, wanted to view Catra as a more ethically minded character ("good"'), internal changes have now afforded her opportunity to carry the spirit of redemption with her and her future acts, with more foresight and agency, than say necessarily being a reaction to past trauma and being ruled by that trauma. Which is more introspective, personal and internal, even if that may result in more ethical external actions. I think its super important to distinguish, because I think its kind of dumb and bad to always assign redemption to external physical actions, that may be niche/specific, when the internal mechanisms, awareness, agency, responsibility, etc are more important, plus importantly, we are all limited by opportunities as well. Think about punitive VS restorative justice. Some people like to put limits on some peoples opportunities for redemption, because of their own personal beliefs and ideology. Some people are the equivalents of Shadow Weaver and Horde, some people are more like Angela and Micah (not to imply they are flawless and the former and beyond redemption obviously).
    Catra has done a lot wrong, a lot of harm, to people that didn't deserve it, and also herself, I think this episode is significant, because as far as redemption ideas? Well Catra, had a moment of introspection and reflection, and in that moment she chose to save "Lonnie" aka a person that Adora cares more about than her, at least in her mind, instead of lashing out at her. Which shows a lot of growth. It also simultaneously saves someone she deeply cares about, but usually strongly denies, but she acknowledged it, vocally to, with an apology. With such a moment, Catra has actually opened up a lot of opportunities for herself, because such internalised moments of clarity or acknowledging an idea you usually deny, can lead to a lot of internal development, awareness, and tools a person can use to be better in general.
    I also love this show for also packing so many complex and deep ideas into its writing and context.

    Well, there you go, the best episode of the show, imo at least.
    There's a ton going on here that's worth examining. During the first 'sleepover' discussion Glimmer says something subtle that's still crucial in my view to what Catra chooses in the end. When reflecting on the things she'd like to do with her friends Glimmer also reflects on the damaged nature of those relationships and expresses a desire to 'make it right' . This along with the various reflections on Catra and Adora's past solidifies the same sentiment in Catra, before the more flashy confrontation later on.
    Part of this is just about how the two statements work with Catra, one being about repairing relationships she cherished, the other being a pretty oddly fitting 'do good' . One obviously gets to a drive that Catra's inconsistently shown but clearly has, doing good for it's own sake though is something Catra only really exercises for friends because she can't often afford to do anything more then that. Making it right is also a rather higher standard then just doing good and I think that speaks to why her final words ( as far as she knows ) to Adora are an apology. To an extent I see this grand gesture being both the price Catra has to pay to be able to deliver the apology and have it taken at all seriously as well as a gesture that might mean that when she's gone Adora at least might have some reason to reflect on their shared experiences with fondness and not just bitterness.
    I think Montana's entirely correct about the later interaction between Glimmer and Catra, they're both on the same page in terms of alignment but have very different ideas of how to operate in this sort of environment. Glimmer imagines resistance to be discontent and fighting at every turn, Catra imagines it to be waiting for the moment of maximum impact to make a move. Catra's obviously got more familiarity to know what does/doesn't work in this sort of environment and understands that there's no value to the information Prime gets out of that, Adora's on her way to show up at his doorstep, Prime's always going to have the resources on tap to handle Adora and him knowing might actually keep him from just blowing Adora's ship out of the sky the moment she shows up.
    A lot of why there's space for Catra to make a move is a mis-appraisal of who Catra is by Prime, informed by Hordak's own memories ( since he doesn't actually see all obviously ). Prime and Hordak view Catra as a survivor who will do anything to keep themselves alive, have done so for ages and will continue to do so. What they miss is that a ton of those very real survivor instincts are induced under circumstances of extreme pressure, Shadow Weaver threatens her life explicitly from a young age, Hordak doesn't take long to use the asphyxiation chamber on her and both expect Catra's day to day to be proving to them that it's worth sparing the rod. Catra's lean towards being a survivor isn't some thought-out self interest but an instinct she falls into due to repeated violations of her most basic security as a person, very low on the hierarchy of needs. What Prime inadvertently provides her is enough time to not feel rushed to a final decision of one sort or another, as well as exposure to someone who regularly operates higher on the hierarchy expressing their own sincere desires to 'make it right'.

    Love your reactions!! Not sure y’all have noticed because I don’t think you‘ve ever commented on it, but by season 4 and 5 Catra no longer has those extra tufts of fur hanging from her ears that she had in seasons 1-3. This is because in between season’s 3 and 4 Catra cut them offscreen due to the fact Shadow Weaver used them in order to manipulate her further through physical touch by stroking them at the end of s2.
    Just a sad little detail :( you’ve also probably realized she’s a lot less feral and tends to tone down her more cat-like aspects, including constantly smoothing down her usually wild hair in order to maintain a more controlled look.

    You should try Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeast on Netflix. It's really good and has great storytelling. It's also similar in theme to She-ra and shares a familiar voice actor.

    I think the perfect show to watch (after being introduced to She-ra) is The Owl House. It’s soooo well written, it’s funny, it’s emotional and it’s such a good show. Thanks for reacting to another episode of She-ra❤️
