Hey guys! Thank you so much for putting up these two videos!!! My roommate and I are planning to do the exact same ride in a few weeks (from UCSB) and this really helped us see what we're up against. Great job and looking forward to seeing new vids!
Sorry this is such a late reply but it was awesome! Total riding time came out to 8:38:54 for 138 miles. We stopped 4 times, once we reached santa monica we cut inland to pasadena and all the way home :P Unfortunately there were strong headwinds for the first 70 miles which made it a lot tougher than it should be haha. Great experience overall though!
I live by UCLA and plan on taking the Surfliner to SB. How were the bike accommodations on the train? Thanks for the 2 videos! they provided the information I am looking for.
We reserved a spot for our bikes on the train by pre-purchasing tickets and selecting that option...however, I don't know if that's absolutely necessary. But we wanted to be safe rather than sorry and have a assured spot for our bikes. We locked them up and went to our seats. We wouldn't do the business class seats again though. We thought they'd be better for sleeping as we thought we'd be zonked after the ride, but the price difference wasn't worth it and although our bikes were fine in the back compartment, we would just sit closer to them next time to keep an eye on them. (we locked them with our bike locks and just took our panniers up to the business class cabin with us). It's easy peasy but don't pay extra for "better seats" because there were no snacks and the seats weren't much better. Just sit anywhere closer to your bikes.
I appreciate the time you've taken to answer my inquiry and your additional seating information. I do love to ride and am confident this will be a wonderful ride. Thanks!
We are cycling the entire Oregon Coast starting Tuesday Sept. 5, 2017 - Sept. 13, 2017. We'll post vids after processing and editing them when we return.
Thanks for posting this video - really enjoyed watching it. The busier parts of PCH is what I have some concerns about, when considering this ride. I, however, like that there are some beach paths on which you can ride to avoid those busier stretches of highway. Your next trip? Maybe from SB to LA, then continue on to San Diego? I plan to ride LA -> SD in the next couple of months. By the way, were there any problems on the Surfrider trip back to SB regarding your bikes PLUS multiple panniers? Are you able to watch over your bikes on the train? Thanks!
Glad you liked it. On this trip the only time we really felt nervous was in Malibu where there were lots of cars parked along side the road. I think getting downtown to the train station could have been a little nerve racking but we were there when the traffic wasn't too bad. As for the Surfrider back, we didn't have any problems with the bikes or the bags. We used a carabiner to connect the panniers together and kind of make it into one bag. Once we hit Carpentaria, we walked back to our bikes and affixed all the bags so that when we hit SB we could just roll off the train.
Great job guys!!!!
Thanks, this was our first time touring, and doing videos. :)
Thank you for another great video!
i know this place well ... i frequently mountain bike in Sycamore
