    Thank you so much for sharing this video of your process as a restoration expert. My husband broke a Lladro tonight that my grandmother gave me before she died nearly 30 years ago. I just ordered some of the HXTAL Epoxy and I'm hoping I can do half a good a job as you and put the head back on. Thank you for giving me some hope.

      Lladro ceramics come in specially fitted boxes or crates. Fitted styrofoam for the small ones and specially constructed, fitted crates for the larger, or complex ceramics.

    How do you decide whether or not to use your hotbox to cure the reattached pieces? ❤️🙏

    • @marsgitar
      @marsgitar  7 месяцев назад

      It takes 5 to 7 days for hxtal to cure. If I put in the hot box for 12-24 hrs. I can work on it the next day. The hot box speeds up the curing time.

    Thank you Martin for sharing your expertise in statue repair. I've since purchased the A+B Epoxy and can't believe what a great job it's done on a heavily damaged 1900's plaster and horse hair angel statue I'm repairing. Your repair process is very easy to follow. And thank you for sharing all the epoxies you use and your method of securing the broken pieces. Where do I purchase the HXTL epoxy (not sure Amazon has the one you use)...and can it be used on marble statue repair?

    • @marsgitar
      @marsgitar  4 года назад +2

      You're welcome Gee. I'm glad you found me helpful.
      HXTL can be found in many places on the web. It can't be purchased at a store, as far as I know. It can be listed as "HXTL", "HXTAL", "HXTAL-Nyl-1", it's all the same stuff. I get the 60 gram kit. Yes, it can be used for marble repair. Good for tight-fitting non-porous joint/materials.

    Is the long gold pole porceleian or is it made of metal? I have a lladro clown I would love to get restored, unfortunately though I bought him second hand with 2 fingers missing, could I somehow get new fingers put onto him? 😫

    • @marsgitar
      @marsgitar  3 года назад

      If I remember correctly, the pole is brass.
      Yes, it is possible to repair fingers on Lladro figurines. Send me a couple of in-focus photos to my email address: mscherer@tesserak.net, if you want an estimate.

    • @marsgitar

      I used MicroMesh abrasive sheets, by hand. Grits from 2400 thru 8000. Then buffed by hand with Novus polishing compound.

    Hi Martin. I'm a Restoration technician ad well and I'm repairing the same Lladro figurine. The owner wants me to take off the same big white flower and replace it with the replacement sent from Lladro. So I have two questions: do you have recommendations on how to remove the old flower? Then also have you ever spoken with the Lladro company and had them send you a replacement?

    • @marsgitar
      @marsgitar  10 месяцев назад

      Lladro fastens a lot of the pieces of their sculptures with epoxy. You should be able to see the clear epoxy at the base off the flower. Sometimes it's a bit discolored to an amber color. I use a careful and precise application of "Jasco epoxy and paint remover" to the epoxy. This will weaken or dissolve the epoxy. It might take more than one application before you can get the flower loose. Be patient and careful. You need to rinse, with water, and dry the area of each application of the Jasco before the next application.
      If the part you need to replace is fired in place (baked in the kiln with slip instead of bonded with epoxy) then you need to grind the part off with a diamond bit rotary tool, like a Dremel.
      Yes, it's been a while but I have communicated with Lladro regarding replacement parts. They do sell some replacement parts but not as many as they used to. The best way is to take a photo of the Lladro you need to repair (showing the entire sculpture) and a photo of the location of the part that needs to be replaced. Letting them know you are a professional restorer is helpful. I would check with them on the availability of the part in question before removing it. Sometimes only a part of the flower needs repair. If the part is not available from Lladro, you might be able to repair only the broken part . . . if you're lucky.
      Good luck to you!

    Hi Martin. What is the determining factor for your choice of bonding agent? Thanks love watching your vids

    • @marsgitar
      @marsgitar  4 года назад +1

      Good question. Actually, I'd say there's more than one deciding factor. Also, the answers I'm about to give are a generalization, and only apply to ceramic repairs. There are lots of little issues that can alter the final determination.
      First, I determine if the thing I need to bond is porous or non-porous. Then, the question becomes, what is the condition of the edges that will be bonded. If it's a clean break with perfectly mating edges, I'll use a bonding agent that is designed for a close, tight fit. If the edges are rough, worn, and meet with a loose fit or gaps, then I'll use an epoxy that is a good strong gap-filling bond.
      Another determining factor is the "working time" or "open time" of the bonding agent. How much time to I need to get these pieces in place before the glue starts to set? Do I need to be able to adjust parts later in the build?
      Does the object I'm repairing need to hold water? Do I need a bonding agent and filler in one that I can mix color into? Is it exposed to weather? How strong does it have to be?
      I could go on . . .
      Essentially, the first paragraph comes into play with every repair. After that it's just more specific questions regarding the thing being repaired.
      I hope this helps. I glad you like watching, thanks.

    Hi Martin. Great videos, very helpful, thanks. What is the file set that you use? Do they have a certain roughness? Been using sand paper but can be very awkward to get to certain areas.

    • @tesserakstudios4821
      @tesserakstudios4821 7 лет назад +2

      Thanks Ben G. I use a lot of different files in my work. The ones used in this video are both from Harbor Freight: one is a set of 6 in. metal files with a medium roughness (the gray ones with handles) and the other set is a set of 6 in. diamond files (must be careful with these. though they file in any direction, you have to be careful because they will scratch most anything you file with them). Also, I use abrasives sold at the cosmetics section of the drug store (for filing nails and such; all kinds of shapes and sizes. sometimes I cut these to make the "file" I need.) Hope this is helpful. Good luck!

      I will need to see the item in question. Also if there is a number on the bottom of the figurine, that would be helpful. I need to identify the piece, then check with Lladro to see if there are replacement birds for that figurine, along with there current price. If not I would have to make them. Please send me a couple of photos.
