As YOU point out, the 'right' wood choice can depend on local resources. When in Central Texas, I used mesquite and post oak. I could also purchase 'pucks' of compressed maple or hickory chips. In Central Upstate New York, I could harvest hickory and maple to use in smoking meats.
That has now inspired me to smoke a salmon. I've wanted to do it for a while now, but that's it, I'm doing it on my next camp out. Thank you 😊 👏👏👏
I love hickory, but nearly most fruittree woods work great. Tea leaves too will make great smoke. 👍

Rattan furniture and handicraft are the best here in SEA. Plenty of uses for it.

Rattan also used for home furnitures like chair, table, sofa bed and for decorations. The city next to where i live in the Philippines made a lot of rattan furnitures for export.
If you know furniture designer Kenneth Cobonpue, a lot of his rattan furniture works are bought by many Hollywood celebrities over the years.

Another trick I learned with cooking Trout is if you don’t over cook it you can pull out back bone all rib bones starting at tail it will just pull out with all bones but if over cooked back bone will come off with all rib bones left in fish. So now I’m anxious to try your method before cooking and never have to wonder if I overcooked it and some bones might still be left in. Man I can’t believe the wild garlic you found, here in the states we call them ramps they are so good scrambled in eggs with a lil Tabasco

I like to use oak. We have a few different types of oak our woods. They all give the food a great taste.
Apple wood or Bradford pear is amazing. Then of course hickory or maple.
Aha just commented about wild garlic on another post of yours then this video came up so thanks. Ill know what to pick now as im surrounded by wild garlic. Can definitely smell it before you see it
Mesquite chips is my favorite for smoking fish and about everything else meat wise.
12:10 we have wild elephant garlic where I live and the garlic flower heads are extremely strong when eaten raw lol. Not recommended. 😂 But after the heads open you sprinkle a few of the flower buds on your food and it's delicious. 🤌🏻🤌🏻

Hey Dustin!!! Hope you are doing well. Glad to see you eating healthy. Everybody should be eating more fish and chicken instead of red and processed meat. Can always add more eggs, beans, and legumes in our diet to help our bodies out. Get those 5 daily servings of fruits and veggies in for fiber and to help out the gut microbiome and feel better. Im from Texas so when we grill we tend to use Mesquite wood if out in the scrub or oak or fruit tree in the woods. Definitely stay away from cedar or pine lol. Good for getting the fire started but not for coals.
What you call a chive like plant is also called a spring onion in my state. I prefer to use oak with hickory chips. I also think that it would be a great idea for you to publish a wilderness cookbook. Your food always looks amazing!
lovely enjoyed it .....A fish dish for you so yummy ,,,,,,,,,, 1 large flounder , cut in half fresh tomatoes , parsley sleced finely , garlic cloves mashed 4, 2 onions sliced thinly, 3 big potatoes sliced thin , half cup virgin olive oil , 2 cups water pepper salt . just pop fish in pan then pop the ingredients on top with water. Simmer 30 minutes on stove top . ENJOY !!!

I love the video, but the ratan ( what ever you called it) from the jungle?? you just spoke about using resources around you and then you bring up something from the Jungle? thats a wee bit confusing.
BUT Dustin did point out that he could have used specific local fibers such as honeysuckle. He has often done cordage on the channel made from cedar root fibers.

here in theUS many herb gasrdeners plant a variety of chivr called "garlic chive", I grow it myself. it has that good balane of garlic and chive flavor

We use hickory sawdust and small hickory kindling to smoke our salt pork in a smoke house. When I smoke fish or birds in a smaller smoker I like to use hickory and apple. One drawback - if you cook the food you've grown or foraged yourself, it can make restaurants seem overpriced and poorly done! My pups said to say "Hi" to Amber for them - they are envious of her smoked fish treat!
I live in South Central Texas and the would I like to smoke beef/chicken/pork is Live Oak. I find it gives the meat a very good taste! A mix of mesquite and pecan is also good smoking wood.
I always think: what a great sheath, knife, and steel combination! I go to the store and I can't find any information on dimensions, type of steel, etc. At a 'quality knife' price point, those facts are important and fun to know. I have friends who will ask.
In Florida, wa use Oak and Hickory. Love your show and Amber.
