- I highly recommend air layering your climbing houseplants, especially your expensive or difficult to root varieties, as this is an extremely effective method to root cuttings.
Hi Jeff, I love watching your channel and that you are willing to give another chance to the plant. What I have found is that the saying "if at first you don't succeed, try try again" definitely applies to plant propagation. Right now down here in Florida it is too hot to propagate in soil. (All my plants are outside)It just rots. I have moved to mostly perlite with a smidgen of soil. The water just goes right through the perlite and wets the cuttings. Now what I prefer to do is drench in the morning and mist a couple times during the day. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. The other thing I have to report is that your method (perlite)for saving my Silver Dragon ABSOLUTELY WORKED. She had a big rot spot on the main stalk. I was amazed that she grew beautiful roots. YAY, another save. Keep up the good work!!!!! We can all learn from each other🪴🌼🪴

Genius idea using the orchid pot, Jeff. I will be doing this in the near future. I also use the coated wire, it's a "gentle" approach to securing a plant. The Old Dutch perlite is my go to. I like that it doesn't melt like the smaller pieces do. Another great video. Thanks

Very helpful video. The next time I propagate my Ficus Ruby I’m going to try this. It’s not doing so well trying to root it in a cup of moss.

Hi Jeff, long story short I have a epiprenium pinn I thought it was a cebu blue blue but it’s got really dark leaves. Anyway, I have four strands growing up the wall in my bathroom. They are going all over the walls and the longer they get the bigger the leaves and the leaves are starting to have small holes a bit so I thought I would air layer just Where the vines started putting out large leaves and plant those somewhere else what should I do with the strands that are closest to the soil (mother plant)about 1 1/2 feet are all small leaves should I just cut them right off right down to the soil and then hopefully they will start growing large leaves thanks
I enjoyed this update. I'll be curious to follow your rhaphidophora dicursiva journey! After I cut my mother plant it seems to be pushing out smaller growth and I haven't figured out if it's a light situation or that it had just enough room in the pot to grow horizontal instead of up. I'm wondering if they are like pothos that grow larger leaves as they grow upwards.

I have seen trees air layered on RUclips, but have never tried it myself. Aroids are plants that I have done this method with....
I'll be curious to see the size of the next few leaves on both your mother plant and newly potted propagation. I just planked my Rhaphidophora Decursiva and it's growing really fast! I plan to copy your method of air layering and possibly plant it back in the same pot. I bought some narrow cedar planks online (TreLeaf) that have connectors to extend the plank. They're very aesthetically pleasing but a little pricy. The plant looks gorgeous on it though.
Have you ever ran vines back down the pole once it reached the top? I've heard this suggested but I also saw a Hoya RUclipsr that said Hoyas will produce runners if vines are aimed downwards. Not sure if that applies to Pothos but I found it interesting.
Soon after I potted the airl ayered top cutting, it put out a large leaf. Now the newest one came in a bit smaller....I'll have to wait and see what happens with the next one.

as far as I know no climbing plant likes to grow downwards, they will do everything to climb up again and will produce smaller or similar sized leafs until they grow up again. But it could be that Hoyas are especially sensitive to that, I don’t know enough about that since I don’t own Hoyas. There are plants that seem to be doing okay when trailing down, like the philodendron micans, but they won’t size up that way
