So I watched the trailer for the new live action One Piece adaptation. And as a massive One Piece fan, and massive animation fan, I have thoughts.

I have heard the "One Piece is too -insert something here-" argument so much, but to me this doesn't take into account some of the strenghts of One Piece, Nami asking for help, Sanji thanking and cursing Zeff while saying goodbye, Usopp refusing to not give his all, even if it may cost him his life, all these moments are the first thing that comes to mind when I think about what makes One Piece so much better than many other mangas and what makes it my absolute favorite piece of media ever. All these moments work in the manga but all these moments could also work in any type of adaptation, if One Piece was a book series or a Movie these moments would still hit like a freight train, if these moments are adapted correctly, this series will still be better than 90% of the series that have come out in the last 10 years, hell we know from the Nissin comercials that those scenes can hit harder than they have any right to even in different settings.
For me this series has 2 things that it must do to be a success, make those emotional scenes work and make the essence of the characters work for audiences all over the world, if this series is able to do that it might make One Piece completely mainstream and I know that for many people being able to share One Piece with people that would not have read the manga or seen the anime is probably going to be worth the world.
