Prior to watching this, I had never seen another person that knows about Friends With Benefits/Solitude outside of the Webtoon comments. The way I screamed when it was mentioned.

Webtoon canvases with trans characters: Magical Boy Troubles- Most of the characters are lgbt+ and the plot is so cool and interesting and the colorsssss AAAA Witchurch- Has gorgeous pixel art and amazing lore, updats once a month but it's worth it because the story is really interesting and original

I remember checking out The Prince and the Dressmaker at a local library once; the story and art are super cute and I think I might buy a copy to keep permanently

'I want to be an anime girl' by AzulCrescent is really pretty and seems to be really well received by trans people. The illustrator is a trans femme person and asked friends with other identities for input on those characters. It's diverse and super cute! It's a webcomic on Webtoons for now.

Cosmo Knights and On A Sunbeam are my recommendations. Both are queer Sci-fi books with really fun world building. Otherwise you've got Squad and Belle Of The Ball if you want disaster lesbians, Taproot and Blackwater for disaster gay lads, M Is For Monster if you want frankstein and NB's, and of course there's always Monstress (the autobiography one) and Monstress (the eldritch war murder orphan one [Do not read Monstress unless you are prepared mature stuff])

Prince and the Dressmaker was such a lovely little book! Absolutely loved the art and the story. I don't want to spoil how it goes of course, but I love the what the father does at the end.🎉 I don't really have many queer comic recommendations, since I have mostly read manga and light novels. I would recommend reading ND Stevensons Nimona and watching the movie adaptation of it on Netflix! (I prefer the movie since I feel like it is kind of a continuation or evolution of how ND Stevenson feels about himself now ❤) The second recommendation is Project Nought, which is a cool futuristic story about a guy waking up in the future (has gay and trans characters)

If you want to find specific lgbtq mangas, you can google "lgbtq mangas myanimelist" and you'll find tons of manga list by users, some of which specify what spectrums characters will belong to. My favourite is Bloom Into You with a lot of aspec and lesbian rep. Huge recommendation, my personal favourite. Then there is Love Me For Who I Am with trans, lesbian and gay characters. And the mc is nonbinary from the very beginning. Trigger warning for some slightly homophobic remarks and themes of not wanting to exist (Most of the time very wholesome). I Want to Be A Wall is about an arranged marriage between a gay man and an aroace woman (who is described as asexual only for some reason). Last volume is not out yet. After School Mate. 2 volume series about a trans man getting his first male friend. A warning though, the mc's mother says some horrid stuff to him and the mc feels guilty for acting like a kid, which is ridiculous since he is not to blame for his mother's outbursts. Our Dreams At Dusk. A manga about a gay mc finding a cafe/building where he meets people like him. Also has an aroace character 👍 Some homophobic side characters. Boys Run The Riot. A trans man who finds a group to make clothes with. I Wanna Be Your Girl. A story about a girl who figures out who and what she wants to be, while having dedicated most of her life dedicating herself to her childhood crush, who is a trans woman. Saying this here, it is not a romance. A lot of characters misgendering her best friend at the beginning. Blue Flag. A story about a guy whose childhood bestie likes him, but he tries to get a girl to date the best friend. It is 52 chapters long and there is an AWFUL homophobic character and a centrist at one point. The ending to this manga also comes out of the left field that you wouldn't have known unless you saw the characters' sexualities beforehand. Strip the Flesh. A oneshot about a trans man, who likes to hunt and wants to come out to his father. Last but not least, a honorable mention, Wandering son, which is about two main characters figuring out their genders. The ending might leave some disappointed in some regards, though To me, I Wanna Be a Girl and Blue Flag feel at times bloated with dialogue to explain this and that, which can come off of pretentious, especially in Blue Flag at one point.

Author of Magical Boy actually admitted to being a trans man recently on his comic Mondo Mango and has been on testosterone for 10 years.

Oh do I have a lot of recommendations. Hopefully. If I remember them all. On Webtoon we got Uriah by Toffuo, a kind of murder mystery horror comic. Bo is asexual and also maybe aro. Crush3d by YAA Comics, a hockey comic about a troubled teen called Crush3d. Suitor Armor by Purpah, Novae by Kaixju, Kiss It Goodbye by Ticcytx, Nevermore by Kat and Flynn, and Kai by queenue. I'm sure there's a few more I missed so feel free to add on :D

May I suggest a queer graphic novel? It isn't trans, but gay- "Future", by Tom Mayo Woodman. It's an incredible sci-fi romance, and made me shed way more than a few tears!! (Also.. if you're interested in comedy, the author is in a hilarious improv comedy group called Shoot From The Hip, they have a rapidly growing fanbase on pretty much every social media site!)

As a trans mask, magical boy is one of my favorite takes on the experience. I love how as the caritor starts to except that yes he was indeed destined to be a magical person that maybe that's not necessary a girl his costume changes. Also I love the way they do dead names in this book where they just fuz it out

Nice video, I'ma check these out! I've read a couple of Jen Wang's other books so I know I'm going to love The Prince and the Dressmaker. If we're recommending trans GNs I'd like to jump in and mention Girl Haven by Lilah Sturges, Meaghan Carter & Joamette Gil, and Cheer Up! Love & Pompoms by Crystal Frasier, Val Wise and Oscar O. Jupiter. Also a manga recommendation: The Bride Was A Boy by Chii (which I bought and loved when I was still a dense egg)

Want to added a manga for anyone looking as well! It’s called Boy’s Run The Riot, and has a trans masc protagonist, as well as plenty of other lgbtq characters scattered throughout!

Not trans-specific (there are trans characters, and basically all characters are lgbtqia+), but i super reccomend Heir's Game on webtoon. It was the one comic that made me understand that i was a man and helped me come out! Suspu's works are great in general and you can see how his art progresses with each chapter :) Its finished now and totally free.

This isn't a comic or graphic novel, but the Wayward Children novella series by Seanan McGuire is full of LGBT+ rep, including an asexual main character (in the first book) and a recurring trans guy character. It's a fantasy series that deals a lot with feeling like an outsider. Highly recommend!

I've read both the whole Magical Boy series and The Prince and the Dressmaker. I happen to be transmasc, and I had no idea that Magical Boy wasn't written by a trans man author. I think he did so well in encompassing a lot of the feelings and struggles one goes through as a trans guy, and it became a comfort read for me. Thanks for making this video and providing some new comics to check out!

I always thought the magic system is based on sex, not gender. And each soul has an assigned sex that cannot be changed, nor can the assigned potential for the One Power.

Randland is a whole is not strictly matriarchal, though there is significant female privilege (which I think makes for an interesting change of pace). A true matriarchal society would mean that, for example, property is inherited through the female line (mother to daughter instead of father to son), which we only see in Andor. It would mean that women held all of the political power rather than men. In the Two Rivers, the mayor is elected by the Village Council, which is populated entirely by men. Yes, the joke is that women hold the power because they persuade their husbands to do what they want, but the ultimate power is still in the hands of men. We see a lot of equality in Randland, but I wouldn't say that it's strictly a matriarchy. The royalty of Andor is an exception, since obviously Andor has queens, but that still isn't the rule for all of Andor. Remember, women hold the greatest power - that of the Aes Sedai - but that power is rare and centralized. Everywhere else, men are still physically stronger and larger. Men's martial prowess still has to be counted in power games that deal with armies and battles, even if some women have the ultimate trump card. I think RJ struck a very interesting balance in that way.

The books are about duality - light and dark, male and female etc. But also about the shades of grey that exist in between. It's sort of exploring binary and non-binary themes at the same time. Fortunately the series is long enough to do justice to all of that. More than long enough TBH, but that's a topic for another time.

the reason why this binary partition never bothered me too much is because I saw the oriental philosophy inspiration for RJ as a fascination for that kind of thinking, that translates in every part of the story, not only the magic system. But in doing so RJ put his character on a discovery for the morally grey rather than duality (I'm excluding the "it was another time period" kinda excuse because it's obvious and usually used as a passpartout). great video!

I thought I was the only one who thought FMA was so Avatar coded I recently started watching it and wow this video is only two weeks old.

Huh. I thought the same thing when I was watching this series a few months back for the first time. Both series have a similar feel, it’s hard explain, but they just have this atmosphere. I also find it funny that FMA is a Japanese series with a European setting and European names and ATLA is an American series with an East Asian setting with Asian sounding names. Anyone who’s interested in Brotherhood should also check out the 2003 version of the series. It takes a different direction, but it’s still really good and while it isn’t canon to Brotherhood, it does flesh out the early story much better than Brotherhood. It’s a bit harder to find, but it’s worth it. Also both versions have incredible English dubs.

Eragon is overhated imho. I think it has issues, namely the very slow plot, and the overuse of fantasy tropes. It doesn’t deserve the amount of criticism it gets, though.

Its very similar to the Avatar. But its better than the Avatar as the Avatar has a slower build up and a bit too much filler as the source material. You can easily skip an episode and still follow. Ive rewatched both and FMAB never really stops in its plot, nothing is filler. Skip one episode and you easily miss context. Always a revelation, much harder not to binge.

Funny enough I finished fmab not too long ago and I would always compare it avatar as it had similar vibes and I too never thought another show would rival avatar for me.

FMAB and ATLA are undeniably two of the greatest animated series of all time!!

Didn’t realize this until it was too late but the beginning of the script is supposed to be referring to my initial reaction from finishing the finale of season 1. Which I wrote before I decided to add the tribute to Lance Reddick at the beginning of the video. I hope it doesn’t come across as too much of a tonal whiplash.
