Joan saved the show, became the show and made the show a success beyond any success, and the reason we still talk about "Dynasty" - is thanks to Joan Collins ❤
My Mom called it at the end of the cliff hanger. She said, "They are going to get someone beautiful, European and glamourous to show up next season, I'm thinking either Joan Collins or Diana Rigg, but Joan Collins is more glamourous, so my money is on Joan!" We all watched the season opening episode and when Joan Collins appeared on screen, we cheered. Mom was right!
I was a gay teenager growing up in Rural Ireland when Dynasty was first aired on RTÉ Irish TV and right from the start, I adored the super bitchy Alexis and then to find out that she had a super cute gay son Steven was the icing on the cake - Alexis has inspired many a gay man and drag queen since and like myself, Joan still has an army of adoring gay male fans 😍😍😍😍
I met Joan at a party last year, aged 90 (her, not me!). She was still the most beautiful, glamorous and talked about person there. She was done up to the nines and smartly ascended a huge London 19th century staircase in heels. She was very charming and chatted away and posed for photographs, including with me. She hasn’t lost it.
Dame Joan Collins is an adored national treasure and represents the very best that the U.K. has to offer - I’m so glad that she got to meet the late Princess Diana during her lifetime along with other members of the Royal Family, including the late Queen Elizabeth II and it’s time that she got another honour in the King’s Honours list 😍😍😍😍😍
There are so many things to like about Joan Collins. She's beautiful, intelligent, smart, classy, a very good business woman, a good writer, but most of all she is a wonderful mother. Keep on keeping on Joan Collins.
@S.L.S=407, You forgot to mention a snob, stuck up and bitchy. John Forsythe said in an interview, Joan played her role to the hilt because she was playing herself.
It’s no wonder that we gay men simply adore Dame Joan - the gay community gave her an award via the Attitude Magazine Awards and is wonderfully well deserved 😍😍😍😍😍

I watched this series as a teenager on TV. Now I have the whole series on DVD. I found it boring at first until Joan Collins arrived then the show really took off!! Thank you .... you saved the show!!
@@franciscoblanco8604 Have you seen the entire series, all seasons? The arrival of Alexis certainly jazzed things up - she was a key protagonist from Season 2 on, and the main plot was built around her mutual hatred for Blake. However - maybe it's the matter of perception - I still think that Season 1 stood out from the rest of the other seasons - mainly due to the fabulous Blaisdel family, who's life was depicted in it.
And Princess Diana and Margaret Thatcher in the U.K. The 3 most talked about women were all English and all still remain iconic, though only Joan is still with us.
@@jeylful Of course, but note that Sammy Jo was a villain too. Not that potent and ominous as Alexis, however, she pulled a stunt quite a few times throughout Dynasty as to get hold of money. Besides, she had fine looks - and that surely attracted huge audiences in front of the tv.

4:56 I often wondered what would have happened if they had devised a storyline that would have linked Dynasty to Dallas, where Alexis would have met JR Ewing for example - it’s almost as if they were to have linked Knight Rider to Magnum PI, which itself had a lot of British acting talent, perhaps more so in the latter
3:10 As a gay man, I absolutely adore the fact that Alexis was so wonderfully bitchy and could read her enemies for filth - Dame Joan should be a guest Judge on Ru Paul’s Drag Race 😍😍😍😍
We gay men have always adored the strong, assertive and sometimes bitchy Alexis with her gay son Steven, where we also feel the same about the beautiful Dame Joan Collins 😍😍😍😍
What I admire most about Joan is how she has lived this life to its absolute fullest. Yes, there were failed marriages and being in and out of money throughout, but she left it all out on the table and went after her dreams. I'm sure that has a lot to do with why she's still working, vibrant, and alive well into her 90s. Loving what you do has a lot to do with it.
collins seems bitchy but shes really so down to earth in person...she plays her character so effectively as a villain...i love her and i watch all her interviews..
Sammy Joe and Paige Vanessa were enemies in dynasty, poor Dame Collins had a very difficult time with those younger ladies trying to control her by dressing more extravagant (a vintage version of body shaming) type outfits and having fresh hairstyles each month, Dame Collins felt those younger women suffered with jealousy towards her which I think was true, poor Dame Collins suffered a lot at the dynasty studios during the 80's , it took almost 40 years for her to speak out about this awful situation!
The name Alexis in ancient Greek meant Defender of people and is linked to the name of Alexander the great. In a way that's what Alexis is, she was a conqueror, and she definitely defended HER people. She would not let anything bad happen to the ones she loved. And she is definitely a Great one, like Alexander. The show could have been called Alexis the Great ! And don't get me started on the name Joan, meaning Graced by God, and boy is Joan graced by the god, with a face and body like hers, and the personality and brain to match, all the fairies were clearly invited to the christening ! And just like Joan of Arc she is a symbol of fighting for what you believe in and not let anything or anyone stand in the way.
She was in the 1950s. But Taylor’s career faded and she put on tons of weight while in the 1980s Dame Joan was the most watched actress in the world (well, the show was) and the highest paid.
@marilynwillet804, I was watching an interview here on YT with Joan Collins. When Elizabeth Taylor was filming Cleopatra, she got sick and production came to a halt. They phoned Joan Collins up and asked her if Elizabeth Taylor can't make it back to filming, if she would be interested in taking the part. Joan said I was so nervous for Elizabeth Taylor and I was sitting by the phone waiting for that horrible call. She was hoping and praying Elizabeth would have croaked so she got the part but Elizabeth Taylor recovered. Joan was such a phony.

Went to see Legends when they came to Boston. Joan would not take any photos with anyone. If she signed an autograph, she scribbled her name and nobody would have known who's name it was. Linda Evans took photos with everybody and signed everybody's autograph and did not stop until she was done. She was real class!!!!!

Joan was really horrible in those days and the cast had every right to dislike her, for her claims of saving the show, (which she spouted in every interview and talk show appearance), were rude and unprofessional. Bottom line, Collin’s got the role because her career was over and none of the bigger names wanted to do television, but I remember well the first season and believe it would have become the hit it ultimately became with or without Collins.
With all due respect for Joan - I think that you are absolutely right about the fact, that the show's ratings would have soared overtime with or without her.👍
Joan has a very strange idea about women in business, and good female role models. IMO Alexis is the antithesis of those things. Her entire raison d'etre was emotional, ie she wanted to get revenge on her ex-husband husband Blake. Initially she tried to bring him down in a murder trial, then she sought out his enemy, Cecil Colby, and got into a relationship with him just to get her revenge on Blake. Then, when he died, she used her inheritance (Cecil's company) to repeatedly try and put Blake out of business. I don't remember her making a single business decision unless it punished Blake in some way. So... she did absolutely nothing "businesslike" to obtain power (she slept her way to the top) then she ran her business following her emotions, rather than based on good business sense, for 9 years! In other words Joan played the 1980s mysoginists idea of a woman in business.
Thus one can say Alexis was the archetype of evil, and the complete reverse of what Krystle was. The strife between 'darkness' and 'light' represented by those two was the backbone of the entire Dynasty's plot. Alexis was driven by immense hatred for Blake - remember how she even briefly took control of his estate,in Season 5 ? However, she must have had some businesslike qualities, because after all, she was oil tycoon and was in charge of a huge petroleum enterprise , which wouldn't be possible without any business knowledge ; yet, that aspect wasn't highlighted in Dynasty too often.
