Thanks a million, Xbox Slave!! My grandson is a happy camper. His Xbox had the red ring of death. I ordered your kit and followed your instructions, and now, his Xbox is operating perfectly. I highly recommend this guy's videos and rapair kit!!
XBOX Slave, Thank you so much for your help. I looked at your video for my Xbox 360 troubles, and went out and fixed my Xbox for around $16. A tenant from my mom's rental house left it in the trash with the three rings of death on it. After watching your video I went out and fixed it. Now I have an Xbox 360, and I owe the fixing part to you. Everyone Else, Listen to this guy he knows what he is talking about. You rock man, and thanks again.
I just want to say thank you. I've had a broken XBOX 360 (one red light issue) for a long time now and its been out of order for a while. I followed your videos, ordered the repair kit and fixed it exactly like in your video. It really works. You're a genius !
I used this video 2or3 years ago to fix my xbox. Works beautifully, it was the first time i had ever taken any next gen apart, and after fixing mine, my friend's, and a couple others, i now have a part time job fixing gameing consoles. Thank you,n keep up the good work
Followed the directions and it freakin worked. I've been sitting on this old xbox for about a year and a half.. Now I have an extra xbox. Thanks very much.. Much love..
You are a genius! It actually works and makes sense. Maybe want to mention the size and number of screws and washers needed. I thought my XBox was history, but this solved my problem and I already played another 10 hours.
So bought a kit in the UK Followed your video and hey presto...It worked A point to others....It did not work for me the first time I tried it....So I took the xbox apart again and started from scrach....Take great care with what you are doing....make sure you follow the instructions to the letter...then success!! Brownie points from grandsons all round!!
Dude this totally fixed my XBOX 360's 3 rings of death problem. And you are the man. I followed your instruction to the T and in about an hour and ah half I was back playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare online. For those of you who know how to listen and follow simple instructions, your problem will be solved, as is mine and no bullshit either.
Dude, you da man. I received your kit yesterday and followed your instructions to the letter. My xbox 360 is goin strong. The delivery took sometime however it was well worth the wait. YOU HAVE MY SUBSCRIPTION. PEACE!!!!
I just ordered the repair kit and I will be fixing my xbox 360 this weekend. I will be using this guide since its the best one I could find on youtube.
I just bought this kit a couple weeks ago, did the process, and it works. NOTE: do not pry the x-clamps off while putting pressure on the silicon roads. You can distort or break the roads. Also, I was surprised at how very little (but enough) thermal paste was provide in the kit. I didn't have to overheat the system; it turned green right away. Anyway, happy the kit worked. Thanks
Thank you so much for making this video. This is the best and most informant video about this topic. Just did it and now my Xbox is FIXED. Thank you. Saved me $140.
This worked perfect. My buddy gave me his XBOX 360 and for shits and giggles did what you instructed in your video and sure enough I gots me a new XBOX.
This works. A buddy of mine gave me his old 360. It worked when i first got it. I let it sit for like 6 months, unplugged, tried to play it and the RROD lit up. Followed the steps; works perfectly. Highly recommended. Thanks FixYourOwnXbox... PS- if i remember right the screws that worked are an 8mm head @ quarter inch length.
@TwmDemiGod I haven't had a RRoD after several years with my Zephyr unit, but I still find this facinating. Kind of cool to see all the solutions and causes of these problems people have.
hi there...I followed all the steps and then got that problem that my xbox wouldnt over heat....I took the heat sinks back off, cleaned up all the paste from the chip and the paste that microsoft had let over flow onto the parts surrounding the chip..put the heat sinks back on...this time not tightening so much....turned the xbox on and .....holy jumpin shitballs....no more red lights.....thank you my man....like somebody else said on a post...its not very often you get free help.many thanks.
Hey man I don't have an xbox but I have a friend who did and his just got the red ring so I sent him this. Thanks for sharing your solution and doing it in a really easy to follow way.
Fix WORKED! I think you need to make a video on how to put the xbox back together tho. We ended not having to screw the black screws under the x-clamp in. Also, need to make sure the heatsync (*sp) is touching the chip. Thanks for the help.
@LifeOfLogiclyInline 4 red lights means you need too push the AV cable into the xbox 360 a bit more.. or you need too check if you plugged the AV connectors (which are the red, blue, green, red, and white chords for HD and the yellow, red, and white for the regular tvs) in the wrong port. Make sure you put them in correctly with their color code.
Only thing I would correct is at 3:02. Don't use anything metal, the chip dies can be VERY thin and they are finished with a fine polishing head at the factory. This helps transfer heat (which is the problem we are trying to fix anyway). I use a NEW credit card or the smooth edge of a thin piece of cardboard. Other than that, GREAT VIDEO
I did this on my sons. It had already been done to it (got it on Ebay) I re cleaned and put new past on the heat sink and it worked like a charm! Thanks
Just a heads up, My Xbox is out of warranty for the RROD (purchased in late 2006) and MS is fixing it for free. When I registered the console w/ the Xbox support website it tells me it's out of warranty and that I can expect to pay $99. But when I called support they said there wouldn't be any charge. I sent it out today. You might want to do the same before you rip open your machine...unless you're into that sort of thing.
I haven't tinkered with the 360 a lot but I do build computers and I would think, just as any manufacturer built computer does, that this would come with thermal paste pre-applied? Wouldn't you have to clean the gpu and cpu before you apply new thermal paste? and what is the purpose for the new screws?
Thanks man, this fix worked for me so far. we'll see how it holds out. i went to ace hardware though and bought my own screws, but the ones i got were too long so i had to drill holes in the side of the chassis :P, should've put up the extra $5 and sprung for the kit on the site, oh well.
@tevinmason1 1 red light signifies a hardware failure, which in my case happened to be a faulty motherboard, if this occurs you will need to either return the console to the store you got it from, or send it to Microsoft for repairs. An error code should be shown, which helps Microsoft diagnose the problem 2 red lights signifies the console is overheating, which can be helped by ensuring the fans are clear to work, and not blocked or covered by anything.
Thank for this video! I just fixed my 360 cost me about $20 for the tools/thermal compound and hardware . I did buy the big tube of thermal just incase !
worked great!! didnt even need to overheat it. used screws and washers from lowes. screw part# 138433. nylon washers on circuit board sides and steel washers on top of those no nuts. screw right into heatsink from underside. and I did clean old heat paste thoroughly.
Thank you bro ,it really works !!!! It didnt work the first time because i may have used too much paste $5.00 at Radio Shack ,also i skipped the part about waiting for the 2 lights to come on but its working great now haha !! Listen up everyone watching do exactly as he says ! I got the washers (rubber) and bolts from Home Depo btw. Thanks again man !!!!! Good lookin out
you are my savor, it really does work, i was skeptical at first but I went through with it since it did make since. Also I got a free xbox out of it since someone I knew didnt want his because it was out of warrantee and it had the red ring of death. now any time it dies, ill just do this.
@thomasandmm How I understand is that when ever there is a mechanical FAIL, or major software/firmware FAIL, that the Xbox 360 is programmed to produce the RROD, but the number of flashing red lights (1 to 4) signifies the severity of the problem, ( 1 is least to 4 which is worst). Plus even with the main power brick when the heat turns it from green, yellow-orange, orange, or red that is programed as well.
@SuperHappyRobertTime E74 is caused by the MoBo warping do to heat. This lifts the GPU from the board making the solder joints break. This gives you E74. I've had it twice on both my consoles. You need to flux your xbox as well as Heat gun it & remove x-clamps. By from a general hardware store like Screwfix or B&Q that way you know your getting what you paid for. Also most Xenon RROD is either 0020 or 0120, Most E74 problems are 1020, Llamma is inaccurate tempermental as thats where you look
@prestige162 what do you mean what when you screwing the screws back in its like putting a car tire back on, you don't do right to the next one you go across, like the tire star pattern, xbox x pattern when tightning duhh
So....what ever happened with the 4 small black screws that went through the bottom metal case and into the bolts in the heat syncs? do you just leave those out?
hey D3stuckKB, i had the same question that u did. after wasting a lot of time researching, i just clicked on "view all comments" for this video, hit ctrl + f, and searched "washers". i found this same question that a few other people had answered =)
ok so at 4.03 you place heat sink on chip, turn it over, add rubber washers an tighten nuts! correct me if i wrong but will you not bend mother board even more as you dont seem to have anything between the heat sinks 4 connection holes and the mother board,ie top side?? if u tighten nuts will it not be pulling mother b and heat sink together while squashin mr chip in middle?? sorry if this does not make sense,if u know what im trien to say put in proper english, thanks, maybe i missed something
surely over time the rubber will heat up and become brittle? the whole point of this fix on everyones way, is to remove the x plates to stop the board twisting. your rubber allows this to move? finally you mentioned rubber washers other i see use plastic/mylon other just steel. When you remove it all on the original its all steel. Even screwed onto the actual metal case in the xbox. Does this not also by design add to the heat distribution?
@liaria The ones i got were #10-32x1/2" round heads. The washers were 5mm inner diameter. I did mine with: 4 washers between the motherboard and frame, with the plastic washer touching the motherboard. The heatsinks had one metal and one plastic, again with the plastic touching the motherboard. Hope it helps.
For anyone who is doubting this... You have good reason too. Sure this fix works on some xbox's it worked on mine and it has worked on countless other xbox's i have used this on. However the fix is not a 100% sealed deal sooner or later your xbox is gonna give out on you again it may be 3 days after you fix it or it may be 3 years but fact is it will eventually crash and let you down once again!. All xbox's are different some last longer than others with this fix but it does work for most :)
Hi, I'm in the middle of fixing my xbox right now and realized that NEITHER OF MY HEATSINKS LOOK EXACTLY LIKE YOURS. Did you modify your heatsinks so screws could enter the holes from the top? I don't have those 4 legs that come out my holes go straight under the heatsink metal so I can't place a screw in from the top.
is it better if after i fix the one i got used to only use it for maybe 2-3 hours at a time to keep to much stress on the heat i live in a moderatly hot state but it only gets to about 83 inside
I did this and by godly it works!!!! Great job on this video!!! One question...do we not have to put the two x plates back on? I didn't and was wondering if I do then how do I put them on? Thanks for your help!!!!! FREAKING 10 ON THIS VIDEO!!!!
@thomasandmm Plus the only thing that can give you more specific information about your RROD, is when you get an error message along with your RROD. Which most of the time if there is a message it is either a specified hardware fail or a software fail. That's about it.
@woowoo18451 If u add to much thermal compound, the heat will not transfer very well to the heatsink and will cause it to overheat. An example of what the correct amount of thermal compound to add is about the size of a BB or a rice grain. I used the Artic Silver 5 thermal compound.
If you send it in to microsoft to get the red ring of death repaired. Do they just give you a whole new xbox 360 like the jasper version or something?Or the same one just with a new piece?
@onlinecpu When a desktop shuts down due to overheating its because the preset heat limit for the CPU is reached and the mobo firmware sends commands to shut it down. The red ring of death is a fatal hardware error that is caused by chronic overheating of solder. The CPU/GPU never reach their preset critical heat but theyre not being "damaged", the lead solder that connects them to the mobo is breaking down - becoming liquid and disconnecting CPU/GPU.
I'm still looking for any suggestions. I did everything in this video, including heat gun. I don't get the RROD anymore. I do get green lights, however it will always freeze after 10 or so seconds. Not sure how to proceed from here. Any help will be appreciated. Could it be caused by the screws either being too tight or too loose???
FixYourOwnXbox- Honest to god i cant thank you enough, this worked perfectly because for some fucked up reason microsoft rejected repair order for my xbox but this worked a treat, ONLY thing i would mention is that it didnt work at first, i only tested it once, turn the xbox on and off several times, leave it for a day sometimes because i dont think this fixes it RIGHT away for some strange reason.
hi my xbox just got the e74 and it is out of warranty and i just recently bought a load of new games for it, i could'nt be botherd to go threw the procces shown in the video so i was just wondering have microsoft sorted out this problem on the new xboxs, i know there not a lot of money but i dont want to have to buy another one in a couple of years time again.
Yo Meegz29 ... i'm planing to do the same thing and go buy what i need to do it since the website is not even shipping in Canada. Could you tell me what kind of bolts/screws you used ? Should be something written on the box like #6x3/8 ... would be really appreciated thanks
Iv'e got a xbox with the 3 red ring's and i opened it up ages ago to fix it and i was like holly shit where do i start hahahaha :D And now it's sitting in a box and I got an xbox elite hahaha
3rrod. Does this happen to the new jasper chipset? I once own a zephyr, failed on me aftr just 2months. Nw im sticking to my PS3, but in heart still a 360 fan.
Hey i got red rings again while I was playing and my screen turned silver. Now it sais unsupported on my screen. Should I scrape of the Arctic silver and apply a new layer?
you sound like you might know something about electronics im a mechanic and have limited knowledge of computers but can understand and sometimes see how a system works,my friend gave me his old xbox#2with hdmi when he bought an elite i did a bit of looking on youtube then did my own mods basically i threw away the x clamps, stoned the heatsync level/smooth(the standard all have a radius) and used no thermal paste now it runs for 6 hours fine but turn it off and on and no good, residual heat?
I agree, buy yourself the artic silver 5 cleaning kit and prep both the gpu and cpu surface as well as the surface of the heat syncs as well. They need to be cleaned and preped, don't just pull the old paste off with a toothpick.
look it up on the microsoft website. at customer support they have something were you choose how many lights are flashing on the xbox and they will tell you what u need to do. if it says you have to send it in and you dont want to then i dont know.
@liaria dude the screws are common 1/4 in phillips heads you get at the hardware store get nylon washers also take the heat sink with you to fit them rite im in the proces of fix ing my box again i need to get some thermal paste
@faithxvoid mate it was shutting down i couldnt touch the heatsync for more than a few seconds but now that i have stoned it flat and got a much better contact i think it is allowing me to not use thermal paste after a bit of fine tuning ive been thrashing it turning it off and on fliiped it upside down and its still working basically i think the main issue with the 360 is the build quality next xbox you pull apart check the radius on the heatsync its not level it has poor contact, simple
SalleNr1: check if the fan is pluged in, if its not that make sure everything is pluged in to where it belongs.--Clawsome676: if you got that far in the disasembly of the xbox you will see that the X box clamp skrews are different than normal skrews. The skrews that he replaced the original X clamp skrews with are flat head skrews. You can see this around 2:12 in the vid. Hope this helped.
3:00 a quarter? 3:38 i happen to be an avid overclocker and it is very important to get good temps to remove all of the old thermal paste and clean the heat sink and the chip. That is the reason why you are replacing the thermal past in the first place, because it isn't transferring the heat to the heat sink properly.
Thanks a million, Xbox Slave!! My grandson is a happy camper. His Xbox had the red ring of death. I ordered your kit and followed your instructions, and now, his Xbox is operating perfectly. I highly recommend this guy's videos and rapair kit!!
XBOX Slave,
Thank you so much for your help. I looked at your video for my Xbox 360 troubles, and went out and fixed my Xbox for around $16. You rock man, and thanks again.
Remember watching this many years ago when my xbox had RROD. Wondered what happened to him as he not longer uploads
I just want to say thank you. I've had a broken XBOX 360 (one red light issue) for a long time now and its been out of order for a while.

Thank you so much for making this video. This is the best and most informant video about this topic. Just did it and now my Xbox is FIXED. Thank you. Saved me $140.
Many thanks a lot for the video series. After being on the shelf for about a year I got the parts and fixed it in just over an hour. Works like new =)
This worked perfect. My buddy gave me his XBOX 360 and for shits and giggles did what you instructed in your video and sure enough I gots me a new XBOX.
Thanks for taking the time out to show how to fix the issue, I spent less than 20 dollars to fix it

@Harrypalms2
you need two sizes, a Torx T10 and a Torx T8, the T10 is for the bigger silver screws and the T8 for the smaller black screws

@tevinmason1
That means its overheating, trying finding an air compressor to blow it out cause excessive build up of dust will cause it.
Did everything you said to do and its working. Thanks alot man

Can i ask why we have to replace the screws for the heat sinks with new ones?
thx for the upload. i dont have the problem now but i do have 2 xbox360s and this is good to know
@KhervyTheReal is that by using all these tools or just use two sharp objects and put them in
@onlinecpu When a desktop shuts down due to overheating its because the preset heat limit for the CPU is reached and the mobo firmware sends commands to shut it down.
The one you're fixing has three redlights, but do the steps in the video also work if its one redlight and an E74 error?
dude could you tell me the size of screws you got and washers
Can you put in what size stuff you use like the screw driver the screws.... and what ever you used because it would help thanks =D
What does it mean when no lights like up but the middle? and can it still have RROD if you put too much thermal paste?
Wats the size on the TORX keys"Star Shaped alan keys" set you have there and can I get it at lets say Canadian tire
you sound like you might know something about electronics im a mechanic and have limited knowledge of computers but can understand and sometimes see how a system works,my friend gave me his old xbox#2with hdmi when he bought an elite i did a bit of looking on youtube then did my own mods basically i threw away the x clamps, stoned the heatsync level/smooth(the standard all have a radius) and used no thermal paste now it runs for 6 hours fine but turn it off and on and no good, residual heat?
@minidvpro a man after my own heart. You the man!!!!!!
I agree, buy yourself the artic silver 5 cleaning kit and prep both the gpu and cpu surface as well as the surface of the heat syncs as well. They need to be cleaned and preped, don't just pull the old paste off with a toothpick.
hi there im looking to find some xbox spares, need a cheap ICS1893BFLFT chip, dont suppose you have one?
look it up on the microsoft website. at customer support they have something were you choose how many lights are flashing on the xbox and they will tell you what u need to do. if it says you have to send it in and you dont want to then i dont know.
Excellent tut!
Marc
@liaria dude the screws are common 1/4 in phillips heads you get at the hardware store get nylon washers also take the heat sink with you to fit them rite im in the proces of fix ing my box again i need to get some thermal paste
Do you kneed to switch the screws or can you use the same ones?
@MRWAFFLESJR Oh, alright :| . The swearing caught me off guard and it made me think that you were pissed at my comment.
@faithxvoid mate it was shutting down i couldnt touch the heatsync for more than a few seconds but now that i have stoned it flat and got a much better contact i think it is allowing me to not use thermal paste after a bit of fine tuning ive been thrashing it turning it off and on fliiped it upside down and its still working basically i think the main issue with the 360 is the build quality next xbox you pull apart check the radius on the heatsync its not level it has poor contact, simple
what about the xbox 360 elite dose it have the red ring of death or dose it take longer for the red ring of death to show up
SalleNr1: check if the fan is pluged in, if its not that make sure everything is pluged in to where it belongs.--Clawsome676: if you got that far in the disasembly of the xbox you will see that the X box clamp skrews are different than normal skrews.
That is the reason why you are replacing the thermal past in the first place, because it isn't transferring the heat to the heat sink properly.
on the site, it said it would fix E73, but the vid title says E74, will it fis either? both?
For that alone three lights? Would not it remain better the four?
Thank You! I tried this on 5 360's that had the red ring of death and was able to fix all of them.
Where do you get a new heat sync or is it the same
how tight do u need to make the screws?
@ryan16426 thats just the balnce switch
So the xbox nows if its vertical or horizontal for for the ring of lights
@orionpk Why would you throw out a PS3 and then buy another one>?
I don't get it???
