      Sounds fantastic! High level craftsmanship, next level stuff! I think the mini DSP separates your custom build from all others including my creations. Small box enclosures inherently have limited acoustical tuning limitations and integrating the mini DSP resolves most of those issues. What distances are you measuring with the mic and I assume your tuning the response to be flat and linear? Separate RTA setup? Or is included with mini DSP package? I'm thinking of experimenting with the SURE DSP kernel boards and SigmaStudio software to a similar level of refinement.

    • @roblc11
      @roblc11  6 лет назад +3

      modiane1 Thank you, I put in a lot of time with building and tuning. I used Room EQ Wizard for all my measuring and tuning which works great and it's free. Then I imported all the PEQ coefficent files into the minidsp program. I tried using RTA and Sweep Measure during measuring, both work well but I prefer using the sweep measuring in REW. I experimented a lot with measuring distances, different rooms, and height off the ground. For me it worked best to measure on axis at a distance about 3 times the diameter of the speaker and as close as you can to the middle of the ceiling and floor. I'm looking forward to see your DSP build.

    I would say this is a bit over-engineered, but it's cool as hell, so that doesn't matter! I'm designing a bluetooth speaker for my final year of my audio engineering degree and this build gave me a few good ideas I hadn't considered yet. I found your video from checking the reviews on those passive radiators. Great build man.

    This is by far the most well thought out, robust, and aesthetically pleasing portable bluetooth boom box build that I have seen. Great job. Any chance of getting specific parts numbers of the components and a full schematic? Knowing the battery life at a "normal" listening level would be interesting too.

    • @roblc11
      @roblc11  6 лет назад +4

      Good Goat Thank you, the major components are listed in the description and just about everything else can be found on Amazon and Google. The only schematic needed is the power distribution which is provided in the video. For everything else the manufacturer of the components provide instructions on wire/cable setup.

    Question, is it possible to power the system with 2 x 5000 mAh 5 or 6 s rc lipo packs? I have them laying around here without use and also a powerful lipo charger.
    I have never seen somebody using rc lipo packs and I wonder why, maybe to expensive?
    Hope you can give me a answer on that.

    • @roblc11
      @roblc11  6 лет назад +1

      philip bon You can use a battery from just about any chemistry type. The most important thing is not to exceed the voltage limitations and power requirements of the components in your build. Please refer to the manufacturers instructions to meet the propper voltage and power requirements. Each battery type has it's pro's and cons.

    you said you added the capacitors to protect the tweeters... with the crossover at 48 db per octave, is that really necessary? Beautiful build by the way. I am wondering about using a 30 dollar bluetooth receiver to shave 150 bucks off of a similar build...

    • @roblc11
      @roblc11  6 лет назад

      Thank you very much, they are not required but highly recommended. Those tweeters can't handle those low frequencies and the minidsp installation manual recommends it for protection. They saved me from blowing up my tweeters when I had a couple channels mixed up and during tuning, it's like paying insurance for your investment.

  • @digibluh
    @digibluh 6 лет назад +1

    That DSP in a BT speaker sounds pricey... while not as straight forward, you could use a RPi 3 for $35 with software. it's got enough juice in it for 3 way crossover and/or PEQ. there's probably some software that can use the GPU. just need a decent USB audio adapter for the basic DAC.

      No problem. I like making custom cables in my spare time and I couldn’t help but to notice unnecessarily long cables in such a nice clean build. Check out Redco.com for parts. Much cheaper than paying someone for custom cables if you can solder them yourself.

    • @roblc11
      @roblc11  5 лет назад

      @@roygriend5143 thank you! I don't have anything to protect the woofers except the minidsp, those nd91-4s can take a beating. As far as battery life goes my bluetooth speaker will last several weeks, since then I've upgraded the battery to a 21v 5s4p 18650 battery. It feels like it will last forever. When fully charged it has about 294wh, I'm using twenty LG MJ1 3500mah 18650s.

  • @Magneticitist
    @Magneticitist 6 лет назад +1

    That's a really sweet setup, hell of a case too. My only suggestion would be different batteries, I think those EBL's and the like found on amazon are storing something around 1.5Ah or less. They're cheap yea but you have to buy 3 and put them in parallel just to get the capacity of 1 good one. IMRBatteries.com is a great vendor that has some good ones for around $4 each. So you could either triple your total capacity *by replacing all those, or just use only one bank of 4 in series and get the same capacity.

    • @roblc11
      @roblc11  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you, I agree they are cheap but the endurance I'm getting is pretty good. I use the speaker about a hour or 2 a day at medium volume and it can last about a week before recharging. I have about hundred LGDBMJ1 18650 batteries that are high capacity and plan on upgrading to a 5S4P setup for this speaker for testing. This speaker is a prototype for what's coming next.
