    My first job was soldering audio jacks for an entire summer so I got pretty good at it. I ended up working at that place for almost 10 years. I'd say you did a really good job for your first time soldering. Here are my two biggest tips: 1 - put a dab of solder on the tip of the gun before touching it to the wires. This helps transmit heat from the iron to the wire. You want the wires hot enough to melt the solder, otherwise you'll get a cold joint that could break or have lots of resistance. 2 - Use spring clamps to hold your parts. Just put them on their side and clamp the part in place.

    Very nice speaker build. But most of us don't have all the fancy tools to do this. I built one out of plywood and car stereo media player and car speakers. 12 volt LiFEPo4 battery and charger and sounds great , no foam inside and an vent hole on front panel. did I mention it sounds great. Lots of bass and good overall full range sound. I use it at work on my tool box. I may build a second one for home use or to replace the one at work and use that at home. will see.

    This looks great!! The only addition I would do is to install a couple of 12v 8Ah batteries and charger so you can make it a portable great looking boombox! It will require some additional electronics to convert 110v to 12v, to measure charge and stop charging when full... but I think it would be totally worth it!

      I use 18v power tool batteries in a reciver shoe, then step that down to 12v for a class 'D' amp.

    My daughter and I build a set of c-notes. I recognized them in your thumbnail haha. That box must sound awesome, the c-notes are great. The only downside is that you're missing the great imaging these speakers have by putting them so close together.

    • @craftedworkshop
      @craftedworkshop  5 лет назад +2

      Have Drone Will Travel that’s funny! And yea, it sounds great but I’m definitely not getting as much separation as keeping them separate.

    • @1QKGLH
      @1QKGLH 5 лет назад

      I'm still blown away when I hear the c-note. That's the best sounding $100 you can spend I think. And this box, in walnut, it looks as good as it sounds.

    • @toddzino58
      @toddzino58 5 лет назад

      Yup, the C-Notes are known for their incredible imaging (for the $$.) Almost a waste to use them in this application. I bet they still sound good. I do wonder if a cheaper set of drivers would work well in this boom box. Worth researching if I build one.

      Hey Johnny and Chris... I built a pair of C-Notes last winter and love them--my first DIY speaker project. I've been thinking about exactly this type of project for awhile now. Any thoughts as to whether it would make sense to tweak the crossover for some baffle step correction for this configuration, considering the baffle is now twice as wide and both speakers are essentially on the same baffle? ...or would that be overkill for this purpose? Great job on the build Johnny! Chris thanks for giving us the C-Notes!

    Just to be that guy.. To get better cuts on the cnc use 3d tabs. Experiment with what works best for you but mine are about 1.5 and .22 inches tall. That keeps the movement smooth so you don't get those marks were the bit stopped and went over the tab. I also use one of those vibration cutters to cut out the parts. If I use a chisel it might splinter out. Sorry.. I know i'm just one of many guys trying to tell you what to do.. lol Trust me, I got sick of sanding or trying to sand out those marks and that works really well.

      No, those are great tips man! Easel doesn’t have 3D tabs, but I just got Aspire so I can start messing with them.

      @@craftedworkshop I use vcarve pro. I'm pretty sure you'll have it in Aspire. That's a better version. All from the same company.
      Also experiment with down cut bits. It leaves the top nice and clean. Not that great for the bottom.. but.. and don't drill with it, makes a nice cut. I do not like up cut bits.. Nothing but issues for me. Down cut or straight.

    Would have been nice to see an in depth section dedicated to the power distribution. The first word in the description is BATTERY and yet you have nothing in the video indicating how you handled that.

      Go check out the blog article. Detailed electronics info is a little dull for video, this amp board is modular and has readily available battery packs that can plug into it. Super simple.

    An amazing job, bordering on "over-engineering"!
    However, for all your hard work, I just can't unsee that the speakers overlap each other! Aesthetically, there should be at least a quarter inch of viewable timber, separating the top speakers from the lower ones.
    Just saying... 😉
