  • HMS Cutlass has returned from her first deployment to Portugal, a two day training exercise described by the Royal Navy as competitive but good natured.
This was the squadron's first visit to Portugal since 2018.
Hailed as a ‘huge milestone’ for the Cutlass-class Royal Navy Patrol Launch, participating in Allgarvex-24, as the exercise was called, represents a return to form for the Gibraltar Squadron, which used to visit Portugal frequently, but hadn’t been there in 6 years before this deployment.
The exercise took place off the coast of Portimao with two Portuguese navy vessels, the NRP Cassiopeia and Hidra and included simulations, emergency drills and various other training activities.
The deployment was important in proving the range of the vessel, building on last year’s visit to Tangier.
Commanding Officer of the Cutlass, Lieutenant Commander Cameron Walters, said it was fantastic to share tactics and procedures with their friends and NATO allies, and that they look forward to returning in future.
