Railfanning San Juan Capistrano - 6/6/15

- On an early Saturday morning, I decided to do some railfanning, so I made my way down to San Juan Capistrano for some morning and early afternoon action. The right of way through the station is rather very narrow towards the north of the station, with limited platform space for passengers and tourists alike. Although San Juan Capistrano is a quiet zone, there are many neat railroad artifacts in and around the station, including restaurants and the Amtrak ticket office that are inside old box cars, cabooses, and other rail cars that serve as repurposed buildings.
Train 1 : Amtrak 566 with F59PHI #456 & CabCar #6900.
Train 2 : Amtrak 567 with CabCar #6908 & F59PHI #459. Seems like the engineer on Amtrak 567 is always camera shy.
Train 3 : Metrolink #660 with F59PH #856 & CabCar #646. Friendly conductor on Metrolink #660.
Train 4 : Amtrak 769 with CabCar #6906 & F59PHI #464.
Train 5 : Metrolink #859 with CabCar #667 & MP36PH-3C #902. Friendly crew on Metrolink #859. Engineer gives some short blasts of the K2 along with a cool conductor.
Train 6 : Amtrak 768 with F59PHI #463 & CabCar #6903. Some odd, loud sound coming from the locomotive. Not sure if it's an engine problem or if it is the air dryer kicking on and off.
Train 7 : Metrolink #663 with CabCar #646 & F59PH #856.
Train 8 : Metrolink #662 with MP36PH-3C #888 & CabCar #662. This train had some really loud brakes as it came to a stop.
Train 9 : Amtrak 573 with CabCar #6905 & F59PHI #452.
Train 10 : Amtrak 572 with P42DC #159 & NPCU #90230. Pretty neat looking private rail cars on the rear of this train. Also appears that NPCU #90230 has baggage doors on the side now.

Sweet catches! Sadly, I believe Riverside is a quiet zone now. I know Union Pacific has Wayside "Horns", but the BNSF line from Buchanan Ave. to Mary Street is a quiet zone, or will be. Not too sure. Can you back me up? Friendly crew on that Metrolink. I spoke with a former Metrolink engineer, who worked for ATSF, Amtrak, and Metrolink, and he didn't like SJC because of the quiet zone.
Trains N' Stuff & West Coast Railfan Productions Yes, you are correct, although the QZ went into effect 11/17/16 between Mary Street and Buchanan Street. There is another QZ in Riverside along the PVL between Marlborough Avenue and Mt. Vernon Avenue too. Literally went into effect on 12/28/16, couple days before I went Railfanning there. Certainly missed the horns near and around the Riverside - La Sierra station.
Okay. Thank you for the information. PVL is a short line I assume? That sucks. 3 quiet zones in Riverside. At least downtown still has horns, if I'm correct.
Trains N' Stuff & West Coast Railfan Productions Yep. PVL is a recent extension of the Metrolink system to Perris. Just went Railfanning at the Downtown station a week ago. Horns are still going nice and loud.
