... Could you imagine what the US would do if something like this happened to an American jetliner? But when the shoe is on the other foot, the man who pulled the trigger gets a medal...
"Military Intelligence" is an oxymoron.
Exactly
Kind of like rewarding the police for killing the hostages and letting the bank robbers go.
US Navy investigates the US Navy and acquits the US Navy ...
dishing out awards when civilians are killed is morally wrong. If they needed to award someone , then it should have been the nameless person who warned of com. FTN!
You are totally right.
@@patriciaramsey5294 I guess the navy didn't want to dampen Rogers' war spirit
It's the American "everyone gets a trophy" mentality.
Er, they're not 'nameless'. The video clearly names them as Lieutenant Montford.
Only in America you can receive a commendation for making a mistake resulting in the death of 290 people, just imagine if the situation were reversed we would be crying foul until the end of time. What is worse of all is the integrity of the captain in accepting the commendation, showing he bare no responsibility at all.
As a former service member I will say this was human error at it's finest despite the tech in use. I will say captain Rodgers you fucked up the most. And if not for your glory hunting you could've saved 200 plus souls. I can't blame you for the defensive actions taken. But not knowing what waters you are in is a serious miscalculation. Sincerely a former U.S naval man. This was a tragedy and I'm sure you think of it often so I won't hammer it too much but seriously you fucked up. For those that miss those lost on this day I'm sorry. And for those who feel guilty about the travesty I'm sorry. This is something that should have never happened at fucking all.........
@Ace basically yes
Yes, he did screw up, plus, he shouldn't of been there in the first place. He didn't just disobey orders, it did look as though their were looking for a fight. Then, on top of all that they give him a metal and then he takes it. That should tell you right there that something is off with Captain Rodgers. SMH.
he didn't deserve any medals rather consequences should have been dire.
he killed 290 people
Wow, I did not expect that ending. Mistakes were made all on the US side -- did not communicate enough on civilian frequency, in the few times they did, they did not call out who they were communicating to, said plane was descending when IT WAS NOT, placed themselves in a position they weren't supposed to be at (along the flight path of Iran Air), didn't exercise due diligence in checking commercial flight schedule in the area, left marker in radar so it mistakely read 2 1100 initially but eventually settled fof correct reading later on -- yet they weren't at fault?! I understand there was stress on their side and they had a responsibility to protect themselves but if they were wrong with their decisions, they have to pay. Clearly here, they were wrong. And the most fatal of all was the oversight with the descent. If only the crew member didn't say that, the captain probably wouldn't have made the call. On the commercial flight side, what did they do wrong? They weren't called out properly nor was their flight path wrong so why were they attacked? If it was a US commercial flight, I feel that the investigation report would have been different. SHAME. The victims died for nothing. Causalties of war? Tell that to their families. Families who easily could have been any of us. I'm remembering the Egypt Air incident where the Egyptian government was covering up for their pilot while US was calling for reponsibility. Sad to know that they did the same.
It's always a big fucking blame game when egos take the lead
Good thing this Mayday series was made by Canadians. This story would really be lopsided nor be aired at all if it were produced in the USA.
Government in this case is to blame mostly as they were likely the ones who thought to try and cover it up and hand out medals. It's like with trump right now trying to get out of the mess he's dug himself into. Instead of owning up to all his crimes he just keeps digging the hole deeper and deeper. If it was up to him we would not even have police, medical, or firefighters to help keep us safe and instead everyone would have to fend for themselves and put out their own house if it goes up in flames and if we got hurt we would have to tend to our own injuries or have a family member who has no knowledge in medical training do surgery on another family member.
This seems like an obvious case of the military covering their ass. The facts that the plane was still ascending at missile impact and that it was in Iranian territory make this a clear case of misconduct on the Vincennes behalf.
Why didn’t the other ship think the plane was a threat?
It’s clear from McKenna’s comment that this ship was looking for “action”. They ventured into a place they shouldn’t have been in, entered into Iranian sea illegally and where in the path of a civilian airplane.
The other ship (and a third ship) was still busy with the boghammers. Those gunboats would run in and out of Iranian waters, and the US Navy ships were supposed to stay in "international" waters - which pretty much meant Oman's side at the narrowest point in the Strait of Hormuz.
If the US Navy was allowed to chase the boghammers into Iranian waters, they'd have cleaned them out in short order, but then Iran's Navy would have a legitimate reason to attack the US vessels. The US ships were there to keep the boghammers away from tankers and freighters, not to get into a war with Iran.
@@wissor33
My point is that you can’t just look at it from that point of you my point is that under combat situation it’s easy to forget where you are and The computer or technology screen should clearly show where Iranian territory is like it’s easy to forget that you’re a human when you look at it from a nine point of view.

@@aviatorsound914 so why they have not been blamed for that. Instead, they received medals!
So a American War Ship half way across the globe from its home country, disobeyed a direct order from its superior to engage a battle, proceeds to invade the water of a foreign country, miss identified the squawk code of a commercial airliner, calling multiple times mostly over a frequency that no one can hear, without properly specifying the target they are talking to, while the crew was in a mind set that made them ignore the clear and precise data that was sitting right in front of them, murdered 290 people, AND THEY GOT REWARDED FOR IT?!! Why on earth a military ship cannot communicate on civilian airwaves? Do they forget that they live in a world were civilians exists?
Those who designed the ship system have the blood of those innocent lives on their hands.
I have to agree with you. That thought kept going through my mind over and over. And also, why didn't the Vincennes announce the squawk code of the commercial plane. That would have easily alerted the commercial flight that they needed to respond. It's not a suddenly thing that commercial aircraft just started to fly.
There is an civilian distress frequency for commercial and general aviation aircraft which is 121.5. The naval ship communicated the aircraft's ground speed instead of airspeed as indicated to the pilots.
The reason they don't use ADS-B is due to the fact it can be falsified.

This tragedy was borne of compounding erroneous assumptions and poor systems and process design. I've done a good amount of flying. I have to agree that I wouldn't feel so comfy knowing a fighter jet was waiting in queue behind us at JFK.
@Schlomo Baconberg Depends on how long it was since Iran got the F-14s. The Iranians didn't have the the same maintenance mentality as the US (nor the access to parts), so the F-14s quickly became too precious of a resource for superior radar capability to risk losing doing a mission another fighter could do.
If this happened by USA then what,A new war started between usa and Iran, And the crew received medals, what a technology of USS vincent
Must say this is the most impartial and detailed documentary regarding this event that I've watched. Most docs focus on how trigger-happy the Vincennes' crew seemed to be, then go to talking about the territorial waters issue, and barely mention the civilian airliner other than as a target and the aftermath.
The thing that puzzles me is why, given other countries' view of Americans as warmongers, the civilians flying over a known conflict zone wouldn't possibly think that they might be the aircraft the US ship is trying to communicate with.
To be fair, most other documentaries on the series about civilian planes getting shot down take a more aggressive stance in general. Namely the one shot down by Ukrainian Rebels and the one shot down by the Russians over Sakhalin....neither of those guys are getting much sympathy

There were only 3 out of over 10 that were on a frequency that could be heard on their radio. Of that they were using ground speed not indicated air speed. I don’t know exactly why the air crew would hear their heading and a speed within 50 knots of them and not answer.

Americans would lose their MINDS if an American plane was shot down in error by a missile strike. The way that they down play this is awful.
They disobeyed an order to come to the other ship's aide and were in the Iranian waters illegally. They then mistakenly say that the plane was descending when it was in fact ascending the entire time and NOBODY thought to double check?? Their calls on the civilian channel were vague at best. I don't think the civilian plane did anything wrong because they didn't even see it coming. And after in time the Iranians shoot down a Ukrainian plane
And Ukrainian rebs shuting down another Malaysian passenger plane, months after Malaysian MH370 was lost mysteriously.
Maybe in the U.S. ship someone could of got on the deck of the ship and looked through binoculars and seen it was a passenger aircraft.
could be, but also the aircraft is moving quite fast, at high altitude, so it would take them a while to correctly identify the plane, but honestly the could have done that, yet we never know
İt is obvious that this attack had been done deliberetly!!!
That's why Indians don't like us navy conducting firing exercise in india's exclusive economic zone without prior permission.
This is a pure case of negligence. The military has the tools to more easily identify the aircraft. I the have the Squak code and don’t transmit it. Also the operators should know that a airliner doesn’t need its ground speed hence it doesn’t carry a 1milion dollar Speedo. Hence a speed identification is pointless for civil aircraft. The squak code was a simple key that wasn’t used.
Well...nowadays we also have GPS. Something they didn't have in 1988. The Squawk code would have been WAY better.

I think the Captain did what he felt was called for at the time. Just a terrible tragedy for all. Had they known it was a airliner it would NOT have been fired on & to think anything else other then that is ridiculous!!! Unfortunate casualties of war! Our country has been officially at war since the twin tower's went down! We don't take chances like the last time we didn't fire and Iran fired on our warship killing 37 sailors!!!
Ukraine is trying the Russian's that shot down the passenger plane, in absentia using Twitter data. The US gives medals to the crew that shot down an Iranian passenger plane. Both tragic events.
Captain did what he was supposed to do protect his ship ! 🇺🇲🎚️🇺🇲
Never should have been a war in the first place bud
BLLLLLYYAAAT
Are you saying that they did not fire missiles but shut the aircraft down with a gau-8 sir?
William Fogarty is a disgrace. Nothing but excuse. This is what happen when you ask someone to investigate his/her own team.
Well i see all of these comments protecting the action that have been taken by the us ship. Really a proof of the US people mentality! War-war-shoot-we made the right decision….lol guys you are not alone in this planet!
If you go back and reread the comments, you will see americians calling the Vincesses "murderers" and other things. I am American, but I am greatly ashamed by the wholesale execution of those innocent lives.
It ok, is only an Iranian airplane. Maybe they save some life by taking some life.
Is it still okay if ever your family is in that irañian airplane? I doubt it.
Startled to discover, really? Rogers is Karen with guns.
Rogers pulled a Biden!!!
No he didn't.
Bwahahaaaa… wtf. 🤦🏾♀️ 🤡
Wow! Really? Only if he had one of your heroes new Missiles! You know one of his " super duper ones!" The one he was bragging about. You know, one of the " Hydrosonic Missiles". Remember? Gosh, you're all so quick to bash Biden but you don't remember your heroes insane rambling nonsense when he was trying to be re-elected. Oh, well the "Mango Mussolini" is just that...nothing.
