Thank you for the video! I just moved to a new apartment so this is very helpful.
For those who live in the South hemisphere: South-facing windows are the ones that don't get much sunlight.

Love your videos!! I have felt this way my whole life. Like seemingly more strongly than most people I’m around. When I was little and went over a friends house that was dark, poorly light, depressing colors, I always felt sick to my stomach and wanted to go home. Contrarily, I had a best friend in middle school whose mom made their house so cozy and warm, and I would go home to my mom with all kinds of ideas and the fact that she let me do stuff around the house cleaning and decor and paint wise just impacted me so much. I’m so happy my parents let me help design my growing up home it really made me who I am today !

Pools of light look cool in pictures, but they’re not functional in practice. They really limit how you can use your space. My house was designed to be this way, and it was like a cave at night. I’ve spent 20 years fixing that to make it livable.
My friend carefully selected lights to create a pool of light on his dining table, and now he can’t play board games there because he gets too much glare off the slightly shiny gameboards. Looks great in photos, though. It’s essentially what you described when talking about single light sources. What you really want is the ability to create either look depending on what you need for the activity you’re doing. Maybe I’m having a dinner party and want moody lighting, or maybe I’m working on a project there because it’s my largest table.

Pools of light looks cosy, and also FEELS good 😊 But you do need big overhead lights installed too, for times when you need more brightness for specific tasks like you described!
I’m sorry to hear your home is not lit like you want! I hope over time you’ve managed to correct it for your needs. It’s important to have all light options installed and toggle the lights on and off as needed!
I think your friend could look into dimmer lights for his dining table, that way he can always turn down the brightness to reduce glare from his gaming boards. I found that having multiple dim pendant lights above a dining table is better than one bright pendant, as it still creates atmospheric lighting but overall the light is more evenly distributed over the tabletop, so less glare!

Thankfully I only have two rooms lit only from one side! One is a bedroom and one is a bathroom. I can live with that and have made sure to have lots of natural materials in these rooms. I’ve gone to glass over plastic and have gotten rid of most of the junk I had. Beautiful lines and things with purpose make a difference, too. Check out Rajiv Surrendra!
Such great tips. You’re my new online ❤favorite! Thank you.

Спасибо за видео, было полезно и интересно. А насчёт пластикиковых и искусственных материалов я на 100 % согласна - они очень угнетают
