- We all remember James' epic top speed runs in the original Bugatti Veyron, as well as the even faster Super Sport. We sat down with May so he could tell us more about one of the greatest pieces of motoring entertainment ever put to film.

what that particular test drive didnt show was that a koenigsegg agera rs passed the veyron at 267 miles an hour and did 284 miles an hour

@Bilal Khalid There has been lots of customer complaints regarding the Venom, in a case someone being unable to take delivery of the car despite having paid for it, etc. Also that thing is way more unreliable and can't turn a corner.

I could listen to James May discuss anything for hours on end...especially at a pub.
Those runs with James were 2 my fav from Top Gear (not including the specials) These 3 guys just have the "It" factor and love them as a trio

May I vividly remember you did 253 in the normal Veyron and 259 in the SS, not 253 in the ss and 259 for the test driver, the test driver did 268.

It gets even better: The 431 km/h record set by the test driver was technically not official, because the production model of the Veyron SS has a limiter preventing it from going faster than 415 km/h. And because James managed to reach that speed with the limiter INTACT, that means that, for all that time until the Koenigsegg Agera took the record, HE was the official record holder.

Being a long time viewer of the show n more importantly THE BOYS, I have to say my All time favorite car as far as Beauty is the Lamborghini Countach! But the car I would most likely want to drive Has to be the Bugatti Veyron the one the Professor hit top speed in. Just a magnificent piece of machinery n engineering.

First i drove the car on a special racetrack designed to test max speed. Then i pressed the accelerator pedal to max an flicked through the gears. Then i reached 417km/h as fast as a WW2 Hurricane fighter plane.

Nope. They gave the French guy an advantage. Took the limiter off the car so it went faster.
Colin Antink that is bullshit. The limiter on the veyron SS was at 415km/h (258mph) and it was later removed so that it could go at 430km/h (not that day, and the Guinness Book of records didn’t accept a record with the limiter off at first then it did). The test driver just reached the limiter speed and captain slow didn’t. He is just bullshitting and you believe him.
....it legends speak true, didn't he try to get out of the car while it was still doing 70mph?
Even if he tried, the door wouldn’t open more than a couple degrees because of air speed. Try opening your door while going 60kph and it’s incredibly hard to push open more than a third
@@KevAlberta Isn't it a scissor door on actuators? That would open unlike a regular car door. I read that he'd opened it and was about to put a foot down going over 70 mph. Would have snapped his ankle like a twig. Compound tib-fib fx.
John Malloy nope, Bugatti has “regular” opening doors. No scissors
@@KevAlberta At 60 km/h it's pretty easy to open the door. At winter, one time I couldn't shut the door on my Trabant, so I had to hold it in right turns to keep it relatively closed. I think I did around 50 or 60 on the way back home, nothing special.
If you meant 60 mph, it might be a bit harder, and much more dangerous of course.
MetalTrabant well on turns is different because you have more forces acting on the door. While diving straight at 60kph, try and push the door open. Unless you have super human strength you’ll never get it wider than maybe 25° depending on your door surface area and speed. At highway speeds (110km/h) I can pull the lever on my door and it won’t even pop open anymore. I can push the door open a crack (degree or two) but no more as it pushes back completely.
