Steven and Sam have had a lot of responsibility in crafting what we could call Libera's "sound" in their work with Mr. Prizeman.
Unfortunately boys choirs are increasingly rare, here in the States they're practically non existent outside of a few surviving boys schools. Nothing against girls, but there is a vocal quality that mixed choirs never quite replicate at that age. Also here virtually all boys schools, my Alma Mater included, have gone coed although there is still a niche market for all girls schools. Of course it would be worth a pastors job to even suggest a "non inclusive" church choir. Libera is a treasure and I hope to see them if international travel ever really opens up again.
@@mikegalvin9801 It's a combination of factors that are threatening the treble choir tradition, particularly in the US where it was never really popular to begin with (which is to be expected, given that it's very much an English historical Catholic tradition associated with cathedral choirs.) First, puberty is arriving sooner in both boys and girls today compared to decades (and indeed centuries) ago. The age at which boys' voices broke was around 17 back when this tradition was really established, compared to today where the average age is around 13-15. Unfortunately, losing their treble range at a younger age means less time to develop their talent. I mean, even look at Libera's albums. Every album that is released features a different cohort of boys because those few years in between means a lot of them leave the choir. There are many extremely talented/professional trebles today, but they're very rare and exceptionally and privately trained. Second, and this is far more an American thing, but singing is seen as a more "feminine" pursuit. At this age where being cool and being accepted by their teenaged peers is paramount, many boys are turned off singing. Of course, many boys still rightfully are very interested, but I would argue that this group is shrinking. Especially in America where boys feel the need to be "macho" and socialization pressures from toxic masculinity are still very real. Hopefully, seeing incredible groups like Libera will help breathe some much needed life back into this tradition.

My voice, which was decent but never soloist material, broke in 68-9 when I was 14 going on 15 and think that was usual. Might have transitioned to baritone but left choir because school began consuming more time and I had track and school paper as activities. Not sure I buy into the toxic masculinity thing, aside from the fact that the US is far more matriarchal than patriarchal today (my sister was one of a handful of female Northwestern Law Grads in 77, at 40th Reunion in 17 she noticed graduating class was virtually a girl's school and that's not untypical for modern professions today) Anyway choir was a good way to meet girls so we didn't think it sissy. Of course my parish always had mixed choirs, children, teen and adult ones which shows the boys choir wasn't much of a thing here in US. My Catholic high school had a choir, which was all boys like the school and also a glee club but of course by then I wanted to be Eric Clapton not a traditional singer. Oh well. Libera is a treasure isn't it and soon will be time for Kings College Cambridge at Christmas.

What a legacy Robert Prizeman has left. An anthem for TODAY! Quite the most wonderful of LIBERA's recordings. You can tell that the boys really enjoyed singing this as much as I enjoy listening to it. I listen to it every day, it's such an uplifting experience in this current Putinised world.

An anthem for TODAY! Quite the most wonderful of LIBERA's recordings. You can tell that the boys really enjoyed singing this as much as I enjoy listening to it. I listen to it every day, it's such an uplifting experience in this current Putinised world.
At their concert, I told Dom and Mathias that this song was my fav song they sang at their concert and they just laughed lol. They were both really nice and so were all the boys.
