In this video I react to helpless child by Swans.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

Helpless Child, like many songs from this period of Swans, is about Michael Gira's own personal life experiences. His parents separated when he was young and he mostly grew up with his mother. However, she was an alcoholic and didn't really parent him at all, so he was on his own a lot of the time and got into trouble with the law in his youth. Eventually, Gira developed his own dependency on alcohol, which was at its peak around the time he was making Soundtracks for the Blind.

You should listen to all of Soundtracks for the Blind. Most Swans fans, myself included, consider it they’re best album. It’s not quite like anything else in they’re discography.

This was a pleasant surprise. I hope you get a chance to hear the whole album, it's one of the best pieces of art I think I've ever consumed and it always hits me really hard emotionally. The songs hit even harder when you've heard the tracks surrounding them and it's hard not to relate to them in some way.
I'm glad you mentioned David Sylvian. My favorite from him is The Secrets of Beehive, have you heard it?

I got a chance to see Swans a couple years ago during ‘The Glowing Man’ tour. Incredible band. They try to make it known to wear ear plugs because of how loud they are. I brought some but tried to see if I could handle it. I couldn’t last 20 seconds and I was up on the balcony. One of the best sets I’ve ever seen.

That album isn't even really an album in the traditional sense, neurosis just sent jarboe a bunch of leftovers from times of Grace and she laid vocals on top of them, it's probably the worst offering neurosis has put out, in my opinion..a better neurosis starting point might be, souls at zero , through silver in blood, times of Grace, or enemy of the sun..all excellent..
