Another amazing work! I have been looking forward to this since finishing the last incredible video and the lot before that. This fresh look at the lore is plainly a work of great study. The tone and storytelling are spot on.
@@josephweymon8020 go back to second edition. Not WotC’s later and bizarre retcons. The most accepted myth (yes myth, because devil and honesty don’t go together) is that Baator formed after Asmodeus was literally tossed off Olympus. D&D if rife with dichotomy. Opposing ends to every conceivable spectrum. For the Fey Wild, there is the Shadow Fell, for the Abyss there is Mechanus, and to Olympus there is Baator.
There are three canonical origin stories for asmodeus that Im aware of. The one that matters is the one your dm chooses, and thats that. Or you can mix and match them. Hell, you can have all of them be true through time linearity shenanigans, doesnt matter
This is why I got confused by Rafael's plan in BG3. He acts like Mephistopheles is the "overlord" he wants to topple, but utterly seems oblivious to the actual god of the nine hells.
He has those severe papa issues, his obsession w/mepho is probly just from that. I will agree though it is funny how over-confident he is to take on someone like Asmo. Perhaps he has allies & plans in the hells aside from the crown as well? Still just seems like a lost cause overall. 🤭
Considering that Mephistopheles is himself plotting against Asmodeus, Asmodeus might even support Rafael discreetly. Asmodeus might not factor into Rafael’s plans for that reason. But of course that’s just an idea.
@@brendanheald9067 indeed. Most of not all the lord's of the nine hells are plotting to usurp Asmodeus, but Rafael seems hyper focused on Mephistopheles and seems to be saying that after that it will be a cake walk to take the nine hells and then the WHOLE WORLD (street fighter ref 🤭) Asmodeus is probably completely aware of all these shenanigans and like you said probably just pitting Rafael against his daddy. I'm guessing the reason that the raid that saw the prism stolen by Durge and her merry band of cultists succeeded was probably because Asmodeus ran interference from the shadows. I'm really impressed by the depth of story telling being presented without saying half the words. Maybe I'm just seeing too much into it, but it's really nice to look beyond what the characters say and realise what it likely actually happening and what probably really went down. Vlaakith traded the prism to Mephistopheles for something only to have it come back to haunt her 😁

My bard has actually made a deal with Asmodeus And now I owe him souls.. lol what are some very effective ways to secure souls for him? Also, this is a really great video. Thank you.
My oathbreaker paladin had a similar experience, he found a few street orphans, two boys, adopted them, took them out for ice cream took them home and showed them the bedroom, for one child. He threw a dagger between them and told them to fight it out, winner got adopted. The smaller boy won the fight by backstabbing his friend. Before the boy died I healed him slightly with lay on hands took him to the altar I had built in my character’s home and performed the sacrificial rights while forcing my new son to participate. That kid went on to literally become a time traveling god who was true neutral, so my autistically Machiavellian views tell me I was a very good dad. Also that character went on to open a gate to the hells, got promoted to an arch-devil and became a leader of a minor faction in a campaign set in the far future. I went on to dm a short campaign that revolved around two paladins of bahamut (the players) saving a boy that was kidnapped by a devil worshipping cult. The boy was actually the first born son of my previous character now a devil lord, and the rituals they were performing on him were attempts to awake his devil powers. They didn’t know that though, they took him to a church to palor the sun god who requested help. The church leader tried to perform a ritual to channel palor’s light to burn away the boy and his immeasurably evil potential. The paladins jumped in and saved the boy from a second altar in 2 days. One of the paladins was captured (after giving in to his barbarian rage and killing multiple palor priests.) the other got the boy to safety where he got a vision from asmodeus, asmodeus had been blocking and preventing the boy’s hellish powers from manifesting because my previous character was given the rights over all devils on the mortal plane (then considered the 10th layer of hell) but my character sent all devils back through the portal except a handful he chose as personal servants. Asmodeus can’t do anything because of the contract he signed and wanted some way of getting payback. The visions of a giant platinum dragon the paladins were seeing were actually asmodeus masking himself as a dragon, but it was his original flying serpent form he was showing them. But he tricked the paladins onto that path to get the boy and raise him to use his powers for good. In short, making a deal with asmodeus and forcing starving orphans to fight to the death as a sacrifice to asmodeus was one of the best sessions I’ve played and sparked storylines for 3 full campaigns spanning 2 years.
Thanks for the feedback, right now there is only so much ambient classical background music on available without youtube hassling me, but in the future I will buy some music rights and try to at least have something to match the mood a bit better. He was a celestial (in one story), but out-bargained the gods into giving him Baator as the sole deity of the plane.
