- 1971 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode 220 V8TV
There is a lot going on with the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am for ‘71, not the least of which is how cool the car looks. Pontiac engineers really did their homework to help make sure these cars could still offer high performance in spite of impending regulations that would otherwise choke the bird out.

I’ve owned a 1973 Trans Am for 47 years and still love it
Even the low compression 455HO was still a really good performer and the 70-73 T/A is one of the best looking cars ever made imo
Absolutely right and by far the best looking Trans Am ever produced!!! My "dream" car is a 1973 Buccanner Red SD-455 with a 4-speed manual transmission.
@@christopherrichardson5352 Mine too!
70-73 are, by far, my favorite of any era TA. This one knocks it out of the park
Heck ya!!!
You got that right!
It checks all the boxes.
I totally agree!! I feel the same way about the same era Camaros.
Still remember seeing a black 70 1/2 formula with a ram air goat motor and a 4speed on the cover of high performance pontiac magazine (in 85ish) and I was mesmerized. It seemed like the baddest musclecar period. At 15 years old that stuff gets into your DNA.
Cool. I had a '71 formula with a 455HO and an M22 trans back in the mid 70's that I bought for $2300. How I wish I had kept that car!
That was a rare car!
I love it...I’ve got a 70 ..I hope to make it as nice as this car.....thank you for sharing it ..
That car is so beautiful. About to tackle a restoration of a 76 with just me and my dad. I remember driving it when I was 16/17 with my dad and man, I don’t think I could tell you a time that I smilled more. I’m 23 now and look forward to reliving that moment with him
I know where I can buy a 76' 455 4 speed T/A and this might push me over the edge to buying it !
I had a 76' Carousel Red (hugger orange) Tan interior,400, all the factory Decals, some faded, but all there #s matching...My Mom had a 79' blue, with blue interior
We had a 73 when my dad was dealing cars and I’ve had several Trans Ams but 73’ has always been a favorite
Just an outstanding car! The color, the condition, the roar of that 455 HO, I listened to that 10 times already, they are a joy to look at and a bigger joy to drive, Thanks Pontiac.
Now that's a trans-am! Beautiful car! Awesome colors, love the agressive look! A attractive musclecar!
I had a 72 Formula 455 and loved that car. Its the one I still wish I had never sold.
MuscleCarOfTheWeek
Oh the glory days. A more optimistic, simpler, and happier time for most Americans and it showed in the cars that GM made back then. That car is incredible! Thanks for the upload.
I was only a 6 y/o child at the time but I vaguely remember that one of my relatives had a car almost exactly like this! We have YT and the internet today but so many others things were really better back then.
Awesome car. The 70 to 73 body style was always my favorite especially in blue with white stripe.
Beautiful looking Trans AM, love that body style, I had a 1975 Trans AM I would definitely take the 71 any day of the week !!
I guess you would.
What a car, I had a '71 over here in england in 1985, two holley 850's roller cam, dana rear axle, just a touch of the throttle would send it flying toward the horizon like a scalded cat! the local cops were not impressed with my choice of ve-hicle lmao!! Only downside, it drank more fuel than a fighter plane, loud pipes, lead feet....,,,
Pontiac trans am and formula were one of the best muscle cars of the 70s ,sharp looking cars
Man those HO and SD 455’s were truly torque monsters. Always have been a Poncho fan
Rough around the edges shows the car that was well loved and cared for. Just as full on restores are great for showing us what the car was when new...we need cars at all parts of the spectrum, because these cars were part of daily life in their day, and that's how we should appreciate them....
Love those lucerne blue Trans Ams! Beautiful! Sure the '73 '74 455 SD cars were awesome but so were these!
The scoop was functional through 1972. It was boarded up beginning in 1973. Also, all '70-81 TAs came standard with front disc brakes and 15-inch wheels.
Stunningly beautiful and solid performance for 71.
love this beast i fondly remeber many years testing out one these cars - when i started the engine i was amazed and shocked at how powerful and brutal the engine felt and sounded !!! the trans am dream for me will be forever !!
Darn, Brothers just got me into having another favorite car. I love this TA!!!
I owned an almost exact duplicate of this car in the early eighties. Mine had the blue interior. It had been fully restored by a Pontiac service manager and had one a car show. It got stolen one year after I bought it. I still get chills watching these videos of that car. Nothing else sounds like that gurgling exhaust note!
I had a 1970 Chevelle SS convertible back in the day and it was a great car, but the 70 to 73 TA will always by my dream car. Just perfect.....
I'd take it in a heart beat! Absolutely love the 4 years of the 2nd stage Trans Am's before Pontiac changed the nose. ❤
Not only my favourite Firebird, Trans Am, or Pontiac muscle car, but also my favourite out of any Pontiac car that has been built before or since. The styling and the monstrous and incredibly torquey 455 H.O. V8 are what make this car more than special.
428 was a late '60s Pontiac block used in the larger bodies like Bonnevilles and Gran Prixes.
It’s my DREAM CAR all the way!! 🥳👍🏾😎🤟🏾🔥🇺🇸🤴🏾
I find myself watching many of your old videos now the channel has come to my attention. As a european i love old school muscle cars. There was never attitude and style like this in the history of cars before or after that era, culminating in my all time favorite 78 T/A. Not the most powerful of them around, but they nailed everything else. Love how these birds evolved into that specific one.
My keyboard is all wet and drooly now... beautiful beast of a vehicle.
Put Some SUNOCO Unleaded RACING Gas in This Beast & U Have A T/A That Will Probably Keep Up W/ the SD455 Of 73 & 74.Tks. for ALL the GREAT VIDEOS, KEVIN !!
Hard to believe I sold my 71 Firebird 18 years ago, had a lot of fun with it.
The best LOOKING Pontiac ever produced, period!
That exact T/A in that color, & trim level is better looking than any Vehicle Pontiac ever designed, & produced
T U look up here on RUclips these exact words 1973 firebird orange you’ll see that this isn’t the nicest color for that style firebird
I agree it is by far the best looking body style
Looks amazing yes but the 2002 Firehawk is the best looking imho and yes I love all the previous gens
There are only a few non-mopar cars I'd ever go for:
-first gen Mach 1 Mustang
-69 Camaro SS
-early 70s Trans Am (gotta love that styling)
Love it! Had a 70.
I had the exact same car, except it was a 1972. Much fewer were made that year. Mine was very unique as it had white seats. It was a Florida car.
Very nice..the protests year right..so rare, & the white interior looks very good on em', although I love the blue too
Looks cool. Love the front end
Tom W fucking a
Andrew Brown fucking g
The Pontiac Trans Am from 1970-1973 is my all time favorite muscle car. Preferably my first choice would be the 1970 Trans Am in either color and transmission offering but I would be over the top Happy with any Trans Am from the four year production period. After Pontiac changed the front end bumper they began to miss the mark for me personally. Thanks soooo much for sharing this 71 Trans Am, it really brings back memories. 👍🏾
This body style can't be beat! It just doesn't get any better than this amazing 71' T/A
Beautiful car. I want one with a 4 speed, please!☺☺
I’ve owned 3 Firebirds in my life…A 69 350 HO…..A 75 TA 400 CI…..And my current 2002 TA Convertible… F2 was the best Firebird ever made. The dash, guages, shaker hood, spoilers with ground effects really put that car together well and the sales proved it…Although the 75 TA was choked of power with the converter, installing free flow dual exhaust solved that problem…I drove 50,000 miles the first year I had it…But the 455HO of course was the ultimate……
“so cool”
I had an 80 with the 301,it was anemic at best.still loved how it drove thou.i would say it was a poor mans Corvette. This one is a beauty.
You had the wrong year, mine was a 74 sd-455. It ate corvettes for breakfast.
Now you take that 301 out put in the comes with box, & Put a LS motor in it, or a big block Pontiac or even Chevy
perfect for me! gorgeous car!
Always loved that color over the white cars with the blue stripe. They should have had that color on the 69 T/As . But my favorite T/A was the 79 Tenth anniversary edition. Even though they were gutless boat anchors, they just looked so Damm cool with the silver interior and the bird all the way to the A piller.
Just One More if the 10th is the 400 4 speed is not an anchor.... 220 underated hp (260 in reality) with early 70's performance
@@tonidmc the 403 Olds/automatic combo was a dog, but the 4 speed versions had the Pontiac 400 and we're definitely a better performer. Pretty fast by late 70s standards. My personal favorite car from that era was the 77 Pontiac Can Am
I'm a huge fan of the 70-73 styling, but must admit the 79 TA/TA floats my boat too.
I sat in one brand new in the showroom, as a wide eyed 18 year old. Man was that a cool looking ride. I'll never forget what my Pop said as he walked by..."hop on out of that space ship, and lets get going". With that interior, he couldn't have been more right!
Beautiful car. I love all 455 TransAms!
What do I think?I think Pontiac got it right everything about this car is what the muscle car was all about👍👍💪💪
Mopar guy here but I love the 70-73 Firebird/ Trans Am body style. One of the best looking cars of that era period in my opinion. I'd love to have a 70 1/2 RAIV or a 73 SD455. The 2nd gen T/A's are the best Trans Am's ever made imo. Awesome looking, performing, and handling cars. The total package. This car is a big reason why Pontiac was always my favorite manufacturer other than Dodge/Plymouth. They didn't give up on performance even after all the new emissions laws came into play
What a beauty. And beast.
During the early 1980s to the end of the 90s my friend owned a unique 1971 Trans Am. It was a 'triple blue' TA. Lucerne Blue exterior, blue interior and factory blue tint glass. It had 1 option, an AM radio. The Rally 2s were replaced with no cost option substitute Honeycombs and option-delete console. Yep, the TH400 was column-shifted. Everyone thought it was a fake TA.
In 1986 he wanted another car so I bought his '74 400 4 speed TA (26,000 original miles) and he bought a nearly full optioned '73 SD TA. I frequently drove his SD. Nice car but I wish I could have owned that '71 triple blue TA.
Beautiful and powerful enough to make it statement...
Beautiful car, I would like to correct you about the hood scope, it is functional, it has an electric solenoid that will open up the flap when the gas peddle was floured. On years 70-72, after 72 till 75 it still could be functional but you had to manually remove the factory rivets holding it closed, because of federal regulations. And Pontiac knew it's owners would make that mod!
Nice t/a have
a 81 since 83 love to drive it handles great always liked the 73 tho
When Pontiac came to play, they always brought their biggest bat.
That is a beautiful car!! And you are 100% right they handle the road almost like our super stock asphalt short track race cars! I had a 1975 fierbird 400 and I could take corners at 90 mph on some interstate roads here in Virginia she would easily grip the road like glue my 1968 fierbird can't touch that car handling wise...
The car was such a leap forward in styling that it remained current even into the 1980's.
Still looks fresh today, in my opinion. The design team hit it out of the park with the '70-'73 T/A!
so much so its being copied , Still !
Freaking awesome !
another Fantastic Firebird
Trans Am's from 1970 to 1978 were some of the best looking muscle cars ever...the true muscle was really from 70 to 74...the interior of these Trans Am's were then and to this day the sexiest interiors of any muscle car ever imo.
69'-76' are the ones, these years all had 400 or 455 Pontiac & looks,77 the popular Smokey had 403olds,a301, 350,all different, but some rare 400s exist
Love all the TA’s
I'm a Mopar guy, but that is gorgeous. Perfect proportions, not a bad angle and the graphics/scoops are tasteful.
Great body style and performer. A winner
One of the coolest cars ever made
Great video
Thanks!
Love these cars..I had a 76' Carousel Red which is Hugger Orange for Pontiac,Tan int., 400,still had the decals,it was all there just needed some love,76' has the Honeycomb grill to match Wheels,& last year of true Pontiac & Single headlights
I'm proud to own one. It's a beast
1972 was the last year for the functional hood scoop with the flap that would open up when you floored the gas pedal. The scoop had solenoids in it. The reason why they started doing this was because of noise pollution mandate from the sound of the four barrel carburetor sucking in air. The 1973 scoop had a fake scoop that was sealed off. My brother had a 72 trans am 455 ho . I remember sitting in the passenger seat and he would floor the gas pedal and the flap would open up and you could also see the gas Guage drop and here the sound air sucking through the carburetor. The 72 trans am was the rarest of the cars. They only produced a little over 1200 cars because of a strike at GM that year. My brother's car was the same color as this one.
These TA'S ARE SOME OF THE COOLEST CARS TO EVER COME OUT OF THE FACTORY IN THE USA!!!!
I once own a car nearly identical! mine was red, whoa I loved that car but like an idiot sold it. thanks for sharing this!
I had the 71 Formula 455ho. A 78 TA took its place, and I still have it...
I miss my 4-speed Martinique blue 1978 Trans Am, bought new in July 1978.
That is one of the coolest cars ever made. Beautiful sexy lines. Super easy to get 400 horse out of that motor and it's still run on regular. If you dare to do some head work and raise the compression you can get 500 horse. The only problem with that is the torque numbers go up and it already was a torque monster. 335 horse that came with is nothing but fun.
Beauty!👍
When he touches the paint with his hands it drives me crazy. Every car, every video
What a looker .....man o man !
This beauty is a knockout!😀🛠️ I have a Welly 1:24 scale die cast model of this one, except it has the Pontiac Rally 2 wheels!😀🛠️
Love the Trans am 455 h.o
I could have bought a white one with blue stripes just like this in 1991 for 7800 bucks. It had just had a fresh correct repaint and was all stock. It had all the parts and just needed minor trim completion. Factory A/C car too. Foolishly I passed....
I have a 71 esprit. I love it.
What an awesome beautiful car I had a Brewster green that was painted blue 73 I wish it would have never sold it
Really Cool ride!!!!!!
As far as muscle cars went, Pontiac really did have it going on, canceling the brand was a bad decision by GM.
According to Bob Lutz, GM was forced to end Pontiac by Obama’s corrupt ‘car czar’. GM wanted to close Buick and keep Pontiac.
This era bird was the best looking …, EVER
Pontiac made some awesome 455's. Which was tops, the 455-HO, or 455-SD? I mean POST 1971, low compression, emissions, sae-net measurements, etc.
ANYBODY? ???
SD455.
Not a fan of American cars but this trans am is really stunning and well designed
This in a 4 speed manual please.
How did I miss this tutorial? Such a "whole" car. These early T/As had the whole package. Love this Lucern Blue too. I love the fact it is an A/C delete, but wish it had the Muncie behind the 455 HO. It tickles me pink to see you guys hammering on it too. Thanks for posting. (thumbs up) :)
There is no such thing as "A/C delete". Air conditioning was always an OPTION on GM muscle cars of this era. I know less about something like a Cadillac from this era but I assume the same is true for those...perhaps A/C was standard on something like the highest trim level Caddy but I don't think that is the case. That said, I am ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that NONE of the GM "muscle cars" like Trans Ams, Camaros, Chevelles, GTOs, Buick Grand Sports, 442s, etc EVER had A/C included from the jump. If you wanted air conditioning in your muscle car, you ADDED IT to the list of options and paid extra for it...A LOT extra, because it was definitely one of the most expensive options on cars from this era.
The same thing goes for people saying "radio delete" if a muscle car doesn't have a radio and has the factory block-off plate in the dash. Other than 1967 L88 Corvettes, which I BELIEVE (I'm a Chevelle guy, not really a Corvette guy) came ONLY without radios from the factory, ALL radios were OPTIONAL EXTRAS! Even the most basic AM-only radio WAS AN EXTRA COST OPTION that had to be deliberately ordered by either the buyer placing the order or the dealer ordering the car for their inventory. You did not get a radio included from the factory...if you wanted one, you paid extra for it. And if you didn't select one of the optional radios, your car came with a plastic plate covering the hole where the radio would go in the dash (called a "block-off plate"). People see that and say the car is "radio delete" when it was actually just not ordered with a radio.
And the same thing goes for stripes on something like a 1970, 1971 or 1972 Chevelle SS. My 1972 SS 454 Chevelle did not have stripes from the factory (it is a Midnight Bronze car with black vinyl top and black vinyl interior) and I couldn't even tell you the number of times I've heard someone tell me it is a "stripe delete car". When you ordered a Super Sport Chevelle from '70-'72 IT DID NOT COME WITH STRIPES BY DEFAULT! If you WANTED hood and deck stripes, they were an extra cost option (code D88) that you had to DELIBERATELY ORDER on your car! So they can't be "deleted" since they were never "included", just like A/C and radios.
@@johnnytyler5685 You wrote that whole chapter, because I mentioned an A/C delete? I never said A/C was std, I was just saying this car didn't have it. Being stationed in Ark. for over 4 yrs in the 70s, I realize the necessity of it in the southern hemispheres. But me personally don't like the added weight, cost, and appearance of such a creature comfort, which has nothing to do with speed or handing. And it also makes it a bear to change plugs on the pass. side. But hey, that's just me. I'm in New England, and A/C is only needed less than 2 months outta the year. I can live W/O it. 'Specially on a performance car such as this. Not a fan of the automatics either.
@@joequillun7790 I wrote it because you said the car was "A/C delete" when it IS NOT "A/C delete". For you to DELETE something from a car, it has to be INCLUDED in the first place, and A/C was NOT included on these cars. And your comment is quite common, even though it is completely incorrect, which is why I pointed out that tons of people also claim that SS Chevelles without stripes are "stripe delete" or muscle cars without radios are "radio delete". NONE of those things were included from the factory, so they can't be "deleted"...they were simply never added to the list of ordered options.
@@johnnytyler5685 OMG. What-ever. You win.
Nice!
It is a very serious contender...
Awesome car!
I think the scoop was functional through 1972 and I don't think the 455 engine designation appeared on the flapper stock.
very true !
You are correct. The shakers through '72 were functional from the factory using electric solenoids to open the shaker, and the 455 decal on the flap is not original. (had a '72 TA back in High School)
Right on both counts. Mine was a '71 (white/black interior) 4 speed Muncie. Two solenoids inside the shaker operated it when near full throttle. No lettering either on the flapper. Not sure about the forged crank, though.
Formula Firebird I’ve seen you comment in so many firebird videos it seems you love them as much as me
This will be controversial. If you take a functional '74 GTO shaker box (the rhino horn in the muscle car world), completely disassemble it, drill out the rivets holding the ring on the box underside, replace with a TA '73-'76 ring, some splicing of vacuum and electrical lines and adding a bimetal switch-- Bingo Bango Bongo and a shot of matching paint, you have a 'factory-look' '73-'76 functional Shaker box! To twist someone's head, glue 2 large rivet heads on the flapper to make it look sealed!
Let the barbs fly!
No forged cranks used on either '71 or '72 455HO's. The same nodular iron crank was used that came in your grandma's regular 455 Bonneville wagon.
I wuz wondering if anyone else had picked up on that. Good observation Ric P
Only forged Pont. cranks were early 60s SDs, and RAVs.
Favorite car ever, hate the honeycombs.
That car is my favorite in the whole world of the muscle car era The white too was the most 400 ram air 3-4, I do like the white as well the blue takes it tho
The scoop was functional on the 70-72 models , sealed in 73 for noise regulations
its a sleeper! stunning!!!!
shaker hood scoops were functional on the 71 and 72 Trans Am.
Awesome
They were running about 395 horsepower I Dyno one and that's what it was 💯💯👍👍😎
Amazing Trans Am....it’s a stunning car, they don’t make them like this anymore
Down right Nice. !
Yeah, I dig it!
In 1971 the shaker scoop was still functional with the solenoid activated flap in the back. In 72 the Formula Ram Air scoops and TA Shaker hoods were sealed off to comply with "drive by" noise laws passed by the EPA :(
In 70,( 400 engine) 71, 72 AND 73 you could get the WU3 "Fresh air" hood option on a 455 Formula ( except SD in 73 due to the fact a 1973 Forumla 455 SD Has a "Shaker" hood , no scoops.
I ordered a new 1973. Turns out the wiring was still there under the hood so I bought the previous year hood scoop - plugged it in and it worked fine.
