    / roadtesttv
A 1971 Pontiac Trans and a 1970 Camaro SS396 go head to head in a quarter mile drag race. Pontiac vs Chevrolet, so who wins?
Both cars are competing in the Pure Stock Drags, so modifications are limited. The only modifications permitted are minor porting, blue printing and minor weight reduction without altering the stock appearance. That means stock intake manifold, stock exhaust manifolds and street tires.
The 1971 Trans AM in the video is powered by Pontiac's potent 455 HO (High Output) (7.5L) which was rated at 335 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. The 455 HO was produced as emission controls were starting to be incorporated into cars and compression ratios were falling. Despite the reduced horsepower rating, the 455 HO was one of the strongest motors to come out of the Pontiac division. The 1970 Camaro SS 396 in the other lane is super rare as only 600 L78 Camaro's were built in 1970. The rare SS396 Camaro is powered by Chevy's potent, solid lifter, high winding big block 396 cubic inch (6.5 L) RPO L78 which was rated at 375 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. The L78 is a legend with Chevy Big Block fans.
335 and 375 horsepower doesn't sound like much today; however, in the early 70's, these cars with minor mods were menaces on the street.
The SS396 is equipped with GM's Turbo 400 automatic transmission whereas the 455 HO Trans Am is backed by a 4 speed manual transmission. So WHO WINs?

The 455-ho was kind of a happy combination engine. Low compression, under square bore/stroke, cast rods, cast pistons, cast crank, hydraulic lifters, 5200 rpm rev limit, a relatively mild low lift cam, quadrajet carb, and still gave excellent performance on regular gas. I can only speculate on the performance if Pontiac had been able to come out with this engine in 1970, with 10.5/1 compression, a bit more cam, the early 60's style forged 421SD rods, and maybe forged pistons, so it could rev to 5600 rpm. As it was, the one had to upshift gears just as those heads started to really breathe. From what I read somewhere, those round port heads where good for 500hp on a properly prepared 455.

Every person and car takes a second from the time you pull your foot off the brake, mash the gas pedal, then the car to react and start to move. Then the time doesn't start, or qualify as a red light until the back of the front tires clear the beam. Figuring out how to time these delays are part of drag racing. Some drivers will stage "shallow" to give them a little more space before they "red light". But it's all part of drag racing. If you Officially leave too soon you will red light.

Real L78 Camaro's only came with 4speed transmissions in 1970. all 600 cars produced that year were 4 speeds. they did not make an L78 in 1970 with a automatic. also the L78 was way under rated on HP. they rated them at 375HP. in 1965 they rated it at 425HP. never made a change, and the next year it was rerated to 375hp when the 427 390HP ,425HP and 435HP engine came out. they carried it over in to 69 but it get better flowing heads in 69. hot rod magazine did a test on a fully restored 67 L78 396 and it made exactly 425HP. In 1970 the 396 got bored out .030 to 4.124 inch bores. making it a 402 cubic inches but was still sold as the 375HP L78 396. in reality the 1970 L78 402 makes around 430-435HP on the dyno.

The 068 cam is a great grind. I have run 12's with it in more than 1 455. Stock Pontiac heads have very good flow at lower lifts and of course they produce mountains of torque. A buddy of mine tested the 068 vs the 041 in his '71 LeMans wagon and found the E.T.'s were identical but the 041 was about a mile an hour or two faster. His car was running in the 12.70 range at the time. The addition of Rhodes lifters with the 041 cam increased the E.T. by about 3/10ths over the 068 cam. He was running 1.65 rockers on both so that helps the 068 cam some.

Big deal. My 93 Buick Road Master station wagon can make a whole lot more smoke than that Camaro. 😆😆

Bad reaction time off line t/a should have run high 12s with a good driver

That Chevy sure could smoke um and looked good coming out of the hole. But that Poncho had just enough on the big end. A Ram air 4 would have probably shut tha Camaro down by a larger margin

@@will7its Yes, yes, yes and yes. Amazing how many people who post here have no clue. Quicker ET doesn't always translate into a win. Camaro had a better reaction time and so a big enough jump off the line that it was able to hold the TA off all the way to the end.

We proved something....old cars ain't fast.....real tires would have chopped a half second off each of these probably, though, I'll give em that. Two very cool cars, despite not being 2020 gt500s in the speed dept

Ken Christensen Ain’t fast compared to what? These FIFTY year old cars are all engine, carbureted, with points ignition, on bias ply tires, and no computer. 13 sec ET’s out of these old beasts is pretty good. You must be a millennial.
